That is outstanding efficiency for a M3P on the stock wheels. I tried this exact same test with my Panasonic battery Highland M3P yesterday. However, I have 18” efficiency tires on mine. I got 341 miles(550 km) with 5% battery left. I was drafting off of trucks too. However, my average speeds were much higher. If I could average 50 mph I would definitely exceed 600 km. Really amazing efficiency with this car.
@MisterFench3 ай бұрын
@LearningFast it's really impressive! I'd love to do a side by side efficiency comparison one day against another EV where we'd both drive exactly the same route on the same day etc. as it's very difficult to compare numbers from other people, seing as small changes in terrain, speeds, accelerations and temperatures can misscrew the results for a direct comparison. Hopefully I'll soon be able to make some tests like this!

@@MisterFench remove your larger aero covers :-) Then they look ok. But you do loose a bit of the range of course. Cool looking wheels may decrease range also, even if they are light (due to aero). OEM highland 3P wheels are actually forged. Should be noted the LR variant comes with low rolling resistance tires (worse for grip / active driving).
@MisterFench3 ай бұрын
@OlavAlexanderMjelde I told myself prior to picking up the M3P, if the Aero Covers were not attached, on delivery day (some centers dont attach them), I would keep them off If they were on, I didn't want to risk scratching the rims pulling them off. Apparently that can easily happen. Since I'm quite happy with how it looks I'll probably don't try and pull em off. 🤔 If they give 3-5% more range, that's of course a bonus too, as the M3P just isn't as efficient as the LR versions. You can go about 10% further using aero wheel covers. Also, the Tesla does indeed have a buffer below zero. It's about 3 to 4 Kwh. So you likely would have hit 0% and made it to the next charger. On the flip-side, I think using trucks as wind breaks is kinda not a true test. Yes it works, but you could also go further being towed. Also, I wouldn't make a habit of riding behind them, they tend to throw up rocks.

Entertaining and informative but really entertaining! Thanks for this video since I've not seen anyone else doing anything like this before. Most seem to focus on "real-world" 70MPH driving experiences when clearly what you did is also just as real world. I can see me doing something like this with a Tesla, if I had one. (soon, hopefully) Many years ago, when VW diesels were all the rage, a friend drove a VW Rabbit diesel from Virginia to Florida, about 600 miles, while "drafting" as much as possible behind lorries, as you say, getting an amazing 60MPG. That was in the 1980s. He did, however, suffer many paint chips due to debris being frequently tossed up from the road surface by the lorries.

Try to turn off the AC and the screen, and set the RGB, lights, connectivity such as Bluetooth, WIFI is turned off if you can. And no charging other devices such as phone. And if you can't turn of the screen make it dark mode, minimal impact but could do the trick. Keep the speed steady at 80 or 90 behind a truck with no stops, as accelerating to that speed requires more energy. And probably you have some unnecessary weight such as car cables, luggage and other loose items. Before you start make sure it's washed and the filters are clean from any obstruction, such as leaves.

Another amazing video from you. Interesting test, I did something similar myself in the Mach-E a few weeks back when I was driving from Stockholm to Copenhagen. Had about 100km of range left, closest charger was 110km away, the old friends speed and power wasn't gonna do the trick, so I had to stay behind a lorry close to an hour. Rolled in to a Tesla Supercharger with 2% left. I guess I could have stayed at some other charger but didn't have any other subscription than Tesla, so didn't want to pay double for the juice. Oh by the way, really looking forward for your Part 2 of your Austria trip. Maybe a little wish from my side along the way, if you could put up some kind of excel spreadsheet in the end of your videos with how long you've driven in each stint and how much power you added by each charge and what the car says it's been using would be amazing. Seriously, you're doing one of the best Tesla videos there is on youtube, looking forward to tag along with your upcoming adventures 🙂

Thank you for your kind words William! What you mentioned with the charging costs is another issue I haven't yet discussed. It should be illegal that different charging services are able to have that big a difference in their prices. I believe the biggest difference between providers were as much as 80%. Usually in competition with petrol stations, we're talking about a few cents, often no bigger than 3-4% for the cheapest vs most expensive. I'll try and do a summary by the end of the journey. Many things I still learn along the way of doing these videos, what would be nice to have. For an example, I completely forgot to include a map of the European trip. I take it as a given that people just know where Germany, Prague, Austria and everywhere is, not remembering I have a lot of international viewers as well 🙂 Thanks again William!
@williamliifv2 ай бұрын
@@MisterFench Yeah, at least here in Sweden it's insane what some charging can charge for the same charging speed. Ionity for example takes 8SEK/kW without subscription and 3,5 SEK with monthly subscription (1 EUR = about 11,5 SEK). Should be illegal to differ that much. Tesla seems to be the same price internationally, about 4 SEK or about 30 Cents per kWh. However, most of the time as an EV owner, you do charging at home at a much lower cost. No idea how electrical prices are in Germany for home charging. I pay about 1,5 SEK per kWh here in Sweden though. By the way, I think most people have a rough idea about those places you mention, but hard to know if it's 100 or 1000km between them if you never have been there. So some basic facts by the end of the video would certainly make sense. Otherwise I'm very impressed by what you are doing. It's quite unique to describe complex things like EV driving, route planning, consumption etc in a way that makes sense, which I certainly think you succeed to do. You also seem to have got the audio setting just right, your voice comes forward in a natural way and it's loud and clear what you say without being too loud. The camera quality seem to be just on point as well, good sharpness and clear lighting. So keep up what you are doing, like I said before, not many other youtubers out there does it as good as you. This is really high quality material. If you have the opportunity to test some other vehicles than just your Tesla M3, it would be really interesting to hear what you have to say about other brands compared to Tesla. Especially other cars that are similar to the Tesla M3 in size and price like Kia EV6 or similar 🙂

@MisterFench3 ай бұрын
@AlvaroAlvarez-lt2ow theoretically you should be able to just make it with close to nothing left on the battery, that's however if the speed is kept continuesly at 130. In real world conditions with traffic causing you to go a little slower every now and then, plus speed limit zones or construction zones, then I'd say you should definitely be able to make that trip, even with a little left in the batteries. You would however need to charge to 100% before departing 👍
@AlvaroAlvarez-lt2ow3 ай бұрын
@@MisterFench I asked you because I saw in the other video you uploaded that at 130 km/h the consumption was 210 watts and doing a rule of 3 with the battery capacity, it seemed to me that it would be possible to reach 300km on the highway plus the 50 on the road which will be 60-90km/h depending on traffic. Then there is the issue of orography, air conditioning, rain, etc. etc. I want to make the jump to the sports electric car, but at least I need to be able to do those 350km on a single charge at a speed of 130km/h which I at least consider normal on the highway (neither very fast nor slow). Driving at 100-110km/h on the highway for me is absurd.
@MisterFench3 ай бұрын
@AlvaroAlvarez-lt2ow yes exactly. In theory, the trip should be possible to make, but it would also depend on outside conditions like temperature, terrain, passengers, etc. It's going to be tight on a single charge, plus you'd need to arrive at your destination where there has to be charging capabilities. If you'd do some of the time at 120, then it shouldn't be a problem. I'd say it depends on how often you need to make this trip. Having to make it without a charge, and without sacrificing speed (minimum 130), then I would probably say it's at its max limit. Plus, ideally with these batteries you wouldn't want to charge and discharge 100% too often. So trips like these should probably not be done daily, just for the sake of the battery's longevity

@@MisterFench By the way, a Tesla representative told that they usually don’t add the mud flaps on their cars because they affect the range. Maybe you could try without them.
@MisterFench3 ай бұрын
@cdude996 I'm sure there will be a tiny more windresistance with them on, however they play a crusial part in not getting dirt going into the lower side of the car, as there are some tiny openings that collect grime, sand, water, dirt etc which over time will start to rust from the inside. In fact I would recommend some third party mudflaps that cover even better than the original ones, just to avoid issues further down the years

I wonder if climate control off all the way would’ve done it? I usually just drive mine with a coat on, as the car will still heat the seat and steering wheel.
@MisterFenchАй бұрын
Climate does add a few miles of range over a full charge, I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make though. Depends on outside temperature I suppose as well. The more the climate needs to work, the higher the consumption. I think a small BTU climate unit can use upwards 2 kW at full power. Over a few hours it would surely make some kind of difference!

good informative video but i cant help but feel that all this is just a big compromise, imagine bying a 500hp car and then having to go 80km/h on a journey just for the car to last more than 450 kms, goes to show EVs are not ready yet
@j_laskada3 ай бұрын
They are. There is really no need to look for 500Km. I do 330Km with my Performance and I smash the gas when I want. Its just stupid to go this slow.
@thatblue-e923 ай бұрын
@@j_laskada idk where you live but where I’m from we have several cottages around the country and sometimes we have to travel more than 330kms😂 unless you have another actual car the m3p is just something to go to work with
@callsaul88353 ай бұрын
Well, we have to remember that those range problems only exist in Germany. The rest of the World is heavily limited in speed on highways and with 80-130kph the consumption is insanely low. Bjørn Nyland did almost 600 kilometers with the SR Model 3 in Norway. But even on the Autobahn there are a lot of speed restrictions and of course a lot of traffic. So after 300 kilometers and maybe over 3 hours drive you need to rest for a few minutes.
@ndthien3 ай бұрын
While this video is entertaining, it's not realistic or informative in my opinion. No one would ever drive a car like this. People would just drive at normal speeds and charge when the car tells you to charge.

What's the point of driving behind a truck? First it's a cheat, second you might get stones thrown at you from that truck wheels.
@MisterFench3 ай бұрын
The point was to reduce drag as much as possible in order to actually be able to reach the 600km (winning the bet), in these colder conditions. I'm not afraid of stone chips. It's going to happen eventually regardless of being behind a truck or not. So far the car is completely clean and I've done 5k+ km with various driving

Aren't you worried that the trucks you're driving behind might damage your paint with stone chips? A lot of debris comes off those things.
@MisterFench3 ай бұрын
Not really. I've had 3 chips on my windscreen from driving on the highway and all of those were from regular cars driving by at high speed. In fact, the lower speeds you drive, the safer you probably are from getting chipped. I don't know where you're from, but in Europe I'm quite sure that all trucks have certain standards as far as mudguards etc. The issue is not the trucks, but the dirt and stones that are left on the road, typically from roadwork/construction vehicles etc. With that said, I'm not really afraid of getting chipped, it's something that is going to happen when you're driving a car on public roads. For me, it just comes with the territory of owning and driving a car. Quick note: I did a full hand-wash today and I didn't find any chipping or any damage at all. MAYBE I'll do a touch-up with some white colour when it happens, maybe. Depends on how big the chip is 🙂
@Achillias3 ай бұрын
@@MisterFench Dude, is it not obvious that I'm from Europe? In fact, I live in the Netherlands. I can tell you that despite the flaps behind a truck's wheels, debris can still fly out, especially from those with open trailers. You can't completely avoid stone chips, but you can significantly reduce the risk by keeping a good distance from the vehicle in front of you. And since a truck typically has more wheels, the chances of stones being thrown up are much higher.
