Decided to purchase enhanced autopilot today; my ability to use any autopilot feature locally is limited to a 10km stretch of motorway and even then autopilot will cancel on a slight bend. However I wanted to play with the new toys and this gives me an opportunity to do so .. and makes the purchase of FSD 'cheaper' down the line (until the price increases). Need to learn how to auto lane change though as the message to apply slight pressure to turn keeps on cancelling autopilot for me.

Unfortunately I would rate Tesla Autopilot much lower. It seems to me that even in March 2023 the autopilot has basic deficiencies. OK it works reasonably well on freeways and I entirely agree with the lane change comment. Dropping out of Autopilot to change lanes is painful. It would be nice if when you put the indicator on it let you change lanes, did not cancel cruise control and automatically put lane keeping back on once established in the new lane. Failings on highways and lesser roads: Does not always drive smoothly. Does not take the right line through corners. Erratic, sometimes slowing down for corners and other times slowing down after the corner. Does not cope with roundabouts. It recognises speed limits mostly OK but then fails to slow down/speed up sometimes even though it displays the limit correctly. There are various options about the cruise speed and I have it set to follow the speed limit. However when it has failed I have used the right scroll wheel to adjust the max speed. Maybe this confuses it from then on? Absolutely dangerous behaviour slowing very quickly if a pedestrian crosses its path way ahead. You can see that the pedestrian has plenty of time to get out of the way and it should not be too hard for the car to figure that out rather than doing excessive braking potentially causing the car behind to rear end you. Even if you are quick to compensate by hitting the accelerator the car is unbalanced, you as the driver are unbalanced. Not helpful. These are fundamental failings and despite all the hype about FSD how can you even claim to be anywhere near FSD when you can’t even get basic Autopilot functionality right. My wife feels unsafe letting the autopilot drive on the freeway and on the highway says the experience is not smooth or safe feeling. The software version was updated around March 4 2023 for a late 2022 Model 3. I really have to doubt the ability of Tesla to produce a safe and reliable Autopilot anytime soon or perhaps anytime!

Great review, I couldn't agree more on most points. (And I am in Europe, so my experience might be different in some areas.) For me, Auto Lane Change is the big one that makes EAP a no-brainer, just like you said. Auto Park was the second one, but it has degraded A LOT since I took delivery of my Model S about two years ago, so right now I wouldn't consider it worth it. And FSD so far is nothing but a dream. (Disclaimer: I do have FSD myself, because I do actually believe in this dream. But right now it has no real value.)

Thanks Tom, this was a really useful summary. Two points: wrt 'phantom breaking' with Basic Autopilot - the times I find it most annoying/dangerous is on rural highway driving when there is an intersection and a vehicle is crossing across in front of you. As the driver you can tell that there is plenty of time and don't need to slow down but the car brakes heavily. Even with Basic Autopilot the display will show traffic lights but I've noticed that it rarely picks up filter arrows correctly - what's your experience using FSD?
@LudicrousFeed2 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! Yes the car is very sensitive to other cars and obstacles in its lane and will slow down very early. With regards to FSD package, it’s much the same as Basic with visualisations

I totally agree with David on the Basic Autopilot phantom breaking. I've had a new model Y in Perth West Australia for a few weeks and after taking the car down south over Christmas I had the car brake aggressively 3 times from 110km/hr to approx 60km/hr because my Basic Autopilot picked up a car was crossing in front of me, although there was no chance of hitting the turning vehicle. It was so bad I have stopped using the autopilot as it's just a matter of time before someone rear ends me. Also, the MY replaced a 7yr old Audi Q7 which had auto park as standard and would nail the parking space first time, every time. Don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying the Tesla but I feel the Autopilot function (or "cruise control" in the old world) is dangerously bad.
@oldad732 жыл бұрын
@@AG-jq9jz you do get used to it. I'm very comfortable using Autopilot on major roads. You can (sort of) over-ride the phantom braking for crossing traffic by pressing on the accelerator slightly. I'm about to go on an out of town trip and will be trying out the Enhanced Autopilot that we've been given as a trial.

My main reason for not upgrading to FSD and other charged software upgrade features such as the acceleration boost for my 2022 LR M3 is that the software upgrades don't carry over if you sell and upgrade your Tesla car in the future. Not sure why Tesla doesn't enable this since the software upgrades are already tied to your Tesla account so technically shouldn't be a hard thing to do. Personally I like to upgrade my car every 3-5 years so blowing $10K on FSD and another $2K on the acceleration boost doesn't make much financial sense if it means I will lose those upgrades when I upgrade my car to a 2025 Model 3 in a few years time
@LudicrousFeed2 жыл бұрын
That’s a fair point and a reason why one may opt out of software upgrades. I need to find out whether FSD+ helps to increase resale value and if so by how much 🤔
@MrUthatube10 ай бұрын
Or even if the features remain with the car, at least you could recoup the expense that way.
@lindsaybrown76392 жыл бұрын
AT 1:22 you mention that the car will adjust to speed limits when speed signs changes on Autosteer, which I can see is active on the screen by the 2 blue lines. This is not the case with Basic Autopilot. The car will continue driving at the speed set and the Screen will show new speed limit, but does NOT adjust the cars speed. If the limit is below the set speed you are travelling you will get Warnings if set, warning alarm that you are over the speed limit. You have to pull the right control stick down for about 2 seconds for it to adjust. This is very frustrating on freeways where speed goes from 110, down to 100, then down to 80, then up to 100, Also when on Highways travelling at 110 then a section is set to 100 you get an alarm and have to manual adjust. At the next speed sign back to 110 you have to adjust up as you will continue at 100 unless you adjust up again. Will EAP adjust the actual speed according to the speed signs???
@LudicrousFeed2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lindsay I should clarify. I did say ‘sometimes’ it adjusts to the posted speed sign in with restrictions ie. only in certain situations. I’ve found it only does so on single lane roads. As you correctly said, on multi lane roads it does not adjust at all. Since I’m paying attention (or should be!) when driving, I just pull down the right stalk when the speed limit changes on the highway And EAP/FSD Capability behaves exactly the same (Jun 2022)
@lindsaybrown76392 жыл бұрын
@@LudicrousFeed OK, was looking to see if EAP was better at speed sign management as being part of the FSD which should always follow speed sign changes. What have you noticed from watching the Beta Users with regard to Speed Sign changes as I have only seen them drive on streets/roads which appear to be constant speed, no speed sign changes. Keep up the good Videos and work too.
@MrUthatube10 ай бұрын
@@lindsaybrown7639 I had EAP for 3 months through the referral program and speed sign changes don't update on the multi-lane highway. It's not so bad moving from 80 to 100 km/h, but if you miss the 100 to 80 km/h you're potentially going to get a speeding fine. As Tom said, you need to hold the right stalk down for a few seconds to update the speed or tap the speed limit icon (the one with the red ring) on the screen. EAP has just expired for me now and I do miss some features, especially the freeway exit lane departure as some of the exits aren't very clear on the map. It's almost worth buying it for that, but given the package isn't transferrable, either to a new car or on selling, it's basically money down the drain, so you'd have to weigh the options.

FSD in Sydney is a bit scary. The car drives as far on the left as it can even when there are no cars coming in the opposite direction, so you seem to be just scraping the parked cars.
