How dare you Pumelo 1 WHY don't you just appreciate the very good job Big Modeller does bringing to us these fantastic videos instead of criticising and nit picking his brilliant his work. For your information I served in the 4th Royal Tank Regiment in the seventies as Driver/Gunner on the Chieftain and I can assure you I've done my fair share of painting them and no two tanks looked the same. They all ended up with different shades of NATO Green and Black. So in answer to your criticism of his work Big Modeller has done a great job in reproducing the paintwork on this. Thank you for 5 great videos Big Modeller. Only one thing to say Tamiya advertise this as a Mk5 in fact it is a Mk2. Keep up the excellent work

Thanks for this post mate. I'm not experienced in armoured vehicles, so I might have painted them wrong. I always accept constructive criticism, but you can feel when someone gives you a friendly advise, and when it's just an angry rant ;)

British military vehicles when it came to camouflage were often brush painted. There was no feathering so using a brush on a model would be accurate. I have personally helped paint entire (full sized) vehicles with a paint brush. This was done in NATO green over all the mud and rust. Handles, hinges and rubber seal were also painted over. Up close it looked horrible. The inspecting officers knew to stand well back before saying what a good job we had done. It was all a game that we had to go through. I used to take pleasure in squashing as much paint as possible into the door mechanisms knowing someone would have to spend hours digging it out. A mischievous streak that I had.
@Big-Modeller3 жыл бұрын
I know that, mate. When you come close to airplane you'll see they are also painted "sloppy" ;) It's all in the scale though, when 1 or 2 mm of paint have to be divided by 35 or 48 or 72 you'll have to achieve a VERY thin layer. It's only possible to be done by the airbrush (at least in my opinion). And I agree that modellers try harder than the people who service the real weaponry ;)

It's a "black-green", not grey. This paint is strange - light shade when matt, but later it became almost black. I know this sounds ridiculous ;) PS. Instructions suggest using "XF-61 Dark Green"...

Hi! Coming to this video a bit late. I have the kit, as well as its much younger/accurate brother from Takom, but I love the aggressive and purposeful look of this cold war warrior on the Tamiya box art and plan to build this kit as a relaxing "out of the box" project without worrying too much about correcting faults or making it totally accurate. The Chieftain did seem subject to a constant stream of updates in between production blocks and I suspect the Tamiya designers got caught-out with studying a rather hybrid version - whether such an original actually existed - who knows! Having said that the one thing that does bug me with the kit is the absence of a mantlet cover and the thought of all that Sennelager rain and snow soaking the poor sods in the turret ;-) So did a google search for any after-market solutions... nothing to be had. But google directed me to your build video - so watched it and discoverd your solution with the tip of the rubber glove - quite brilliant! (see episode 2 for details) and just what I needed to get me motivated - the rest is pretty inspirational too ;-) Looking at reference pictures XF-61Dark Green looks a good match for the British Army BAOR green and Rubber Black XF-85 ideal for a scale black. Perhaps I'll try the mysterious XF-27 as a green base coat and experiment with a bit of modulation. Anyway great videos in content, style and production. Thanks.

Great video, planning to start my chieftain. Question: What is the white substance you are using to mark the camo pattern?

That's the Tack-It, special kind of plastic mass that doesn't mess the paintwork. There are more similar brands, you might find it as a Blue Tack.

@Big-Modeller8 жыл бұрын
Pozdrawiam.

The camouflage colors are wrong! Gray??? how you figured it out? This tank must by sprayed with RAL Green and Black! This black can you mix 50/50 BLACK and dark GRAY. Than wash and use pigments to lighter the both colors!
@Big-Modeller4 жыл бұрын
I've used Tamiya's XF-27 BLACK GREEN. Watch the next episode, you'll see that it darkened as fuck and is near black. This paint is strange because it sure looks like a light grey when it's sprayed and matt. But when you spray a gloss varnish over, it changes completely. How did I figure it out? Check the manual, there's Tamiya XF-61 suggested which is even lighter than the one I've used.
