Clearly the Model S is a very different kind of EV vs the Kia EV6 which is less than half the starting price, but Kenny, the owner of a new Model S approves of Kia's efforts. What does a Tesla owner really think about DC charging a Kia? Heads up displays? CarPlay? Let's find out!

@EV-olution
@EV-olution Жыл бұрын
I agree. His comments are very good, but as sct 21 indicated, the comment about the handles is not quite on point. The EV6 handles are not perfect, but you simply use the hand that is convenient for opening the door based on the side of the car you are on. If anything, the EV6 and Ioniq 5 handles are much easier to use than the Model 3 and Y handles that need to be manually pressed and open in the reverse direction of what is expected by traditional car drivers. Neither door handle solution, Ioniq 5/EV6 or Model 3/Y, is great but convenience is sacrificed for efficiency and I am OK with that for all 4 models. One comment that could have been made about the EV6 handles is that they feel a bit cheap as compared to Tesla's.

Agree with others, Kenny's comments were thoughtful and great, but door handle "issue" doesn't make sense. Anyone opening rear driver side door using the right hand at Kenny's position would be awkward regardless of door handle design -- this is also true of the model S that they are comparing the EV6 to.

I've been driving my EV6 for 9000 miles now, road trips from Colorado mountains to Atlantic coast and a lot of time in Texas. I disagree with the Electrify America hate, mine most of the time charges 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes on a 350kw charger. It is really very good, I bought the monthly subscription for $4/mo and I can get 200 miles of range for under $5 at a charger in many of the states that bill per minute rather than per kwh. This car is perfect for the Texas and mid-west audience as most of the dead zones are passable. I went from Amarillo to Sweetwater (250 miles) without issues, arriving with 17% battery left. Also, I don't know how Kenny was quoting 330 wh/mi for the Kia, that is 3.03 miles per kwh, which anyone who drives an EV6 knows can't be right. Mine gets 3.6 to 3.8 miles per kwh without trying to save power, flat terrain on the high way at 70+mph.
@randallcoles350
@randallcoles350 Жыл бұрын
So Electrify America is "$0.31/kWh plus $4 monthly fee" at $5 is 16.13 KWhr of battery. This works out to 12.4 miles per KW you might revise your statement that you get 200 miles of range for $16.31. IYF at $3/gallon of gas @ 200 miles works out to 36.78 mpg. Without the $4 monthly fee at .43/KWhr drops the MPG to 26.5 mpg. 245 miles to Sweetwater with 17% left = 295 miles of range off at 77.4-kWh battery pack is 3.81 miles per KW or 262 wh/mi. This sounds about right for a non GT version. My 500 hp model Y performance gets about 333 wh/mi ,, I would think an EV6 with 164 lbs more weight which is very little vs only 320 hp would get better efficiency than a higher output model Y P.
@Caedin8
@Caedin8 Жыл бұрын
@@randallcoles350 you missed the part where I said I can get 200 miles for $5 in states that bill per minute rather than per kWh, like Texas. I charge at 230kw at the peak of my curve and I pay $0.24 per minute charging. That is 3.83 kWh for $0.24, or 15.97 kWh per $1. At 3.8 miles per kWh, I’m getting 60.7 miles per $1. So I’d get 212 miles per gallon equivalent at $3.5 per gallon

Exactly. It's far more versatile. The Kia front trunk is big enough for the bits and pieces Alex keeps there - stuff that might otherwise go under the trunk floor and be less convenient
@amperformance7998
@amperformance7998 Жыл бұрын
One thing that is often overlooked when people criticise the small frunk on the EV6 is the car's extremely short overhangs (something only possible due to the dedicated EV platform), relative to the Tesla. There simply isn't as much physical space forward of the front axle in which to fit all the necessary hardware and a big frunk. Some reviewers and commenters use the relative frunk sizes as a proxy for good mechanical packaging, rather than a result of styling and dimensions.
@christopherm1904
@christopherm1904 Жыл бұрын
I read a survey that showed a majority of EV owners with usable frunks did not utilize that space for much more than adapters and chargers. Most EV owners use traditional trunk and rear hatch space for their everyday storage needs. This is why most new European and Asian EV models are excluding frunks (or designing storage cavities into the remaining space under the hood).

Every review of the EV6, from someone who does not daily drive it, complains about the alternating climate and radio control panel. What they don't know is that your can leave the controls on the panel set to climate and do everything for the radio, except turn the radio off, right on the steering wheel. This includes turning it on, changing or muting volume, changing stations, changing from FM to Sirius, etc, or tuning to another channel. I need to make a dedicated video about the feature, but did mention it in one of my more recent videos.

Also Tesla's interface can be confusing for new buyers as well. Especially since updates changes the interface like removing then adding back in dedicated seat heater controls and no "dedicated" button to access climate settings. You have to know to tap the temperature or slide up.

Seems to me that the Kia, at half the price isn't half the car. Kia's first real EV vs a car in production for 10 years, and the 10 year old is copying the new kid. If Kia can produce one of the best EVs in the world (lots of awards) at the first attempt, what will they be producing in 5 years time? Are Tesla running out of steam? Cars being caught by the competition at the first attempt. The Cybertruck still a dream as Rivian and Ford both have trucks in the hands of customers, the electric Semi, a pr stunt at best whilst others have real electric semis in testing and actually a real physical thing.

But the real question and thing to think about to yourself is if the Kia is worth it, because Kia are not known for having the longest lasting vehicles that last for decades such as Honda and Toyota. But also I don't know how much different a Electric Motor for a vehicle is compared to a regular Gas Motor, so idk if it will last longer than a Gas Motor which I as myself since it's pretty much just a Motor that transfers the power from the Battery into turning the wheels. Because Kias Gas Engines aren't the most reliable and their is a reason why Kias are much cheaper than Toyota and Honda just for going out and buying just a basic and base line trim/basic options you can choose for the vehicle instead of buying the Option above just a simple Basic Option, so what I am saying is that Kia basic option is way cheaper than Honda or Toyotas..

I recently tested a 2019 Jaguar I-pace with no adjustment - also not the best cross shopping vehicle with the Kia. Well yes, the Kia, Hyundai and Chevy Bolts are cheaper than Tesla's, but the real question you need to ask yourself and have answered, is 'How is it's reliability compared to Tesla' so you should really try to research about that and really get a honest answer for that question because Kia, Hyundai and Chevy aren't known for having the most reliable Cars, mainly because their Engines aren't the best and what I would normally label them as 'Garbage' Gas Engines, but the thing is idk how reliable their Electric Motors are that are in those companies Electric Cars and I wonder if they would naturally be better because it's really not much the same as a Gas Engine at all, so as said, I wonder if naturally the EV Engines would be better than the Gas Engines in general in any other brand and all these companies I mentioned above too which I am really trying to mention about in my comment, but as said, just any EV Engines in general for any company..

Living in Germany the CCS charging infrastructure has some way to go yet but there is a lot of competition and the less reliable operator/station manufacturers are already being weeded out. There also is a lot of competition (at least 8 operators that offer 300 kW charging - Ionity, EnBW, Shell Recharge, Allego, FastNed, Aral Pulse, EWEgo, EOn). Only recently almost every McDonalds restaurant in my vicinity installed 300 kW charging in their parking lots. This will soon be supplemented by the so called Deutschlandnetz which will close the gaps the current operators left. The drawback though is that there are different charge cards that create a quagmire of which one is bpgiving you the best price wherever you are trying to charge at the moment... With kW prices rising and the SuC network being more expensive the Tesla drivers have switched to using the other networks more and more...

I won’t spend either $50,000 or $100,000 on A car. But if I were to, I’d certainly do the KIA - especially after this side by side. I didn’t here one thing that sounded like $50,000 upgrade for the Tesla. So, I don’t know, I just really don’t get it. And that steering wheel is AWFUL! Yikes!

Damn I wonder how off and uncomfortable it would feel driving the Tesla, because I drive with one hand a lot while leaning back a bit and just relaxing and getting comfortable. I even drive with one hand grabbing the left side of the steering wheel at the bottom left and just having my arm/elbow resting on my thigh/knee and or the arm rest on the door. Plus how bad it would be for just me personally as a human, like when I have to take heavy turns like when I have to touch pretty much every point of the wheel and especially the top of the wheel that is missing on the yolk of the Tesla steering wheel when I have to take certain turns and such. The wheel looks cool and is a cool looking design and looks futuristic, but really though, how reliable is it to actually use/drive with..(?)

Cool concept for a review 👍. Never had a frunk so it’s not a major interest for me. If the EV6 had a more usable frunk it would be helpful to me to have more access than just the handle. I agree about the location of the turn signal display on the Model S. The styling of the Tesla vehicles are just so bland and generic. The 3 & S tend to look like whey they first started to digitize cars in video games where they were mostly just shapes. Is there a GameShark code needed to switch from normal to sport in the EV6. Both steering wheels are ugly. One of them is also pretty useless. Kia please lose the piano black in the EV6. Native routing should be standard in all EVs and it should work great. I don’t care at all about the split climate functions in the EV6. I don’t jump around with my climate settings much and I always control my audio from the wheel to minimize distractions. I’m more concerned with vehicles that put all of the functional adjustment controls in the screen which force you to look away from the road more often. I liken the regenerative braking adjustment because it almost seems like the engine braking that you get in a manual transmission vehicle.

Great video, however as others have said, it's a real apples and oranges comparison. I can buy two similarly optioned EV6s for one Tesla Model S and still have money left in my wallet. Compared to a Tesla Model Y or even a model 3 would be more realistic. Keep up the good work though!

Pedal feel, as they said. Personally, I think this will get solved quickly enough, but right now some drivers find the responses erratic and hard to modulate. Tesla's logic is that only a small part of the time does a driver spend actively braking in a car that regens when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator.

Whilst the model Y is more sluggish than the EV6, I don’t necessarily think the Tesla is so behind in general. Long term, yes, Tesla will be overtaken by the larger innovation and rapid pace in China and even South Korea; but at least for right now Tesla has a good following that could hold out for several years.

I don't imagine either is coming. I think Tesla is betting on autonomous operation making instrument panels unnecessary (not sure that is a wise bet), and/or they don't want to spend the money. I think part of Tesla's sparse interior approach is the result of cost-cutting, any switches, controls, or screens they can eliminate is a saving. The HUD is more likely, though.

I would consider any EV vehicles not made by Tesla.. but the dealership experience is horrible. California dealership should go.. and anyone should be able to buy a car directly from manufacturer. Cut out the middleman. I do own a Tesla Model 3. The battery drains fast, I think, even if sentry mode is off. Other minor issue on quality. My work offers convenient charging, and plenty of charging infrastructure in my area. However, Tesla offers a unique experience and feels like driving a future car, as compared to regular gas vehicle.

Informative video but you’re not going to cross shop a model S against an EV six. They are in two totally different classes. You’re comparing a $50,000 car to a $100,000 car. 🤷🏽‍♂️. I would’ve liked to have seen this done with a model Y or even a model three. For what they cost however, the EV six and the ionic five are probably the two of the best EV vehicles on the market after Teslas.

While I enjoyed this review, I wish the reviewers gave Kia the leeway that they gave Tesla when they came out with their early versions of electric vehicles. Let's be real. The fit, finish and mechanical issues with the early Teslas were horrible. The first few years, Tesla owners were beta testers for the product. They paid to be Beta Testers. Now Teslas are much better and the company has figured out how to make a consistent product. Given that information, I can tell you that the Kia EVs will get better in a much more compressed timeframe given that Kia knows how to make cars. I've sat in both vehicles and I realized that the shift from an ICE vehicle to the EV6 is much easier than the lunar landscape of the Tesla. In short, I think younger drivers (and drivers that can afford them) will adopt Tesla while older drivers will be more comfortable with Kia. Btw...I love both cars, but I'm waiting for the Kia EV6 GT!

Actually I don't think you can. If the EV6 was made 10 years ago, then you can give them the same leeway. But the reality is that the 1st gen ground up EV is competing against the experienced champ. And frankly, Kia's done a terrific job. I'd pick the EV6 (or the Ioniq 5) over the Model Y myself.

@@os2baba So I went and test drove the Kia EV6 - It was nice but a bit smaller than the model Y - The heads-up display was nice and it felt like a "regular" crossover which will make some people more comfortable but then let's talk about the price - $4k in rather useless dealer installed accessories PLUS a $10k dealer markup. MSRP of $61.6k plus the aforementioned addons = $75.6 with no additional manufacturer installed items, and also before Taxes, Licenses and dealer delivery fees (Taxes are in excess of $5800 alone). Then Tesla dropped the MSRP on Model Y performance to $56,990 ($13K price cut) and the same day I put my order in. With everything, it was $63,800 out the door. Compare that to in excess of $81K to buy an EV6 GT now and you see why I chose the Tesla. I hope the details I provided help someone - Btw due to demand Tesla raised the price already for the Model Y P to $57,990.

@@tedlasalvia9668 IMO, there are just so many ways that I found the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 miles better than the MY. You touched on a couple. For me the deal-breaker is no Android Auto. As good as Tesla's software is, it's no match (other than the pre-conditioning) to AA. Birds eye view, the turn mirrors on the left display in line with the left mirror instead of the mental gymnastics of looking at the rear view in the center console, the quality of the cameras, the far far better sound insulation, much better warranty, better dealer service network etc. I'm in Atlanta and Tesla's price drops have had a miraculous effect on dealer markups on the Kia and Hyundai dealers. So before the price increase after rebate, the price for the MYLR was $51K (after rebate) and the price for the EV6 WND with the tech package (birds eye etc) and Ioniq 5 SEL was about $56K drive out. So for me, the difference was $5K. Now it's $3.5K. I was originally looking at the MYLR. And if I was still looking for it, I'd definitely have gone with either the EV6 or the Ioniq 5. The struggle was definitely between those two. The two major advantages on the Tesla is the charging network. Apparently nothing much has changed in the last 7 years since I returned the Leaf that I was leasing. The CCS network apparently is still dismal. The second advantage I think will be Tesla's autopilot. I turned off the 2017 Genesis autopilot. It was like I was fighting against the car. Tesla seems to have totally nailed it. But I ended up ordering the Model 3. That's working out to $41K after rebate. That's the cheapest EV I can get. Unless I fall in love with it, I plan to sell it in 2 or 3 years and get a 2023 EV6 or Ioniq 5.
