Always so beautiful. We have almost the same technique for the canvases of the sails because the fabrics provided are always much too thick. Now that I make my boats only from blueprints. I do the outer border sometimes with the serger and 1 single needle in a roll. For the hand finishes, I do not sew directly into the ropes to sew them around the sails and I rather pass the thread in the furrow and in the direction of the furrow.

Merci beaucoup! Je pense que cette partie de la couture est à peu près la même pour tous les modélistes. Mais à la deuxième étape - c'est déjà purement ma méticulosité, pour faire la couture la plus historiquement précise de la corde autour du périmètre. Je ne sais pas à quel point Google peut traduire en français, alors je vais l'écrire en anglais : Boltropes were sewn to the sail by a needle and roping twine being passed between the strand of the boltrope then through the sail. Dans la prochaine vidéo, je montrerai un article intéressant où l'auteur compare la couture des voiles du 18ème siècle avec les voiles de VASA et MERRY ROSE...

I use strong tea to stain the sails. Make a pot of strong tea, let it soak for a few minutes, then let it dry.
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
I don't use tea because of its high acidity, because I don't want my sails to fall apart after a few decades. Therefore, I use bitumen or tar, which makes the fabric resistant to changes in humidity and the sails do not deform after filling them. This is especially true of museum models in order to prolong their life as much as possible...

are these sails to be made with some " bag " in them? i see many paintings with billowing sails ! but from what i have come to understand is that any billowing is only from the small amount of " bag " because sails were sheeted home to the yards and the large billowing depicted could only be from loose sheets which btw are usually shown but which i understand was not done .

I have a historical question about the shape of the sails. Typically, on a various historical art, as well, as on a modern photos and majority of the models, the bottom edges of the sails are shown arched, no matter, if this is rectangular, or triangular/trapezoid sail. I always thought, it is/was because of the stretch and bubbling of the fabric under the air pressure, while the sail itself was made with perfectly straight edges. So, when the sail is relaxed (no wind), it would flatten and the edge would become straight. But you show a drawing, where the bottom edge of the sail is arched. How historically accurate and technically correct is it?
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
This model has absolutely no historical authenticity, because it was made only according to the image from a silver church plate. Modellers deliberately make the foot of the sail radial to more easily show the volume of the filled sail. Although originally they were really sewn absolutely straight and stretched over time only from the influence of the wind...

@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
You have to try it. If you have someone to borrow a sewing machine from, you will definitely succeed. My husband sews incredible things on it, I just borrow it for sails))) This part of sewing is really not difficult, after an hour of practice you will start to sew straight seams... And here is the second part of sewing the boltrope even I've been stuck with this for 2 weeks and still haven't finished them yet... It is for this reason that I do not sew sails for money - because it will completely kill my modeling. Even for such a small ship, it takes a whole month... For comparison, I sewed them for 3.5 months for the HMS VICTORY...
