Sweet build Matt. You made a silk purse from a sow's ear there. Roll pan resolve just hand brush MCW on it and tuck it up in there. I got good tips for my AMT and MPC Goats - add drip rails, drill out headlights and fill, swap frame/chassis from AMT Monte Carlo. Also can upgrade my AMT 70 Chevelle kits with the headrests from this kit. Cheers

This was originally released as the 1971 GTO by MPC back in the original model year. It started as a dealer promotional model. After the promo's were made the promo mold was modified to model production. The hood was opened up and the chassis was modified to include an engine. When AMT bought out MPC they combined parts from the MPC original 1967 GTO kit. I believe this was the start for some confusing parts mix-ups. The chassis included in this kit is actually from the 67 GTO kit, which was really not the same car as the 68-72 GTO's. Still your build does complete justice to this kit, much better and more accurate than what you started with. Great job.

Great paint! Job! So glad you pointed out the tire problem. I’ve had this kit sitting in my stash for a little bit now. I immediately opened it up to see if mine was the same. Just spent the last hour digging through my spare parts to find replacement fronts. Edit: General Lee wheels (now packaged as the MPC Country Charger) have fewer spokes than the ones you used. Interestingly mine don’t look the same as the ones you used either. Possibly a mold issue. I found some nice Torque Thrust I’ll be using.

I'm sure you can use a Revell Olds undercarriage that will fit this kit. I used a Revell 68 Firebird engine for better detail. Yeah the extra piece you trimmed of was for use on the AMT 1967 GTO. The rollpan is in place of that piece as the 72 GTO had a shorter chassis. If I remember the two tabs attech to the rear bumper. Anyway yours looks fantastic, great job. Like you said enjoy the kit and don't be afraid of doing some modifying and scratch building...the BODY is worth the effort! Thanks Matt.

I just finished an older version of this kit, 1970 GTO 2n1. I went with the custom. Went pretty well, only downside was the instructions were very unclear as to how to use the rear axle lift blocks. It was just 2 pieces that apparently glue to the stock location for the metal axle and then the existing axle part now glues onto those. Well you can see how that rear axle set up is, so without heating and bending parts, I just couldn’t figure out how to make it work. Ended up leaving them off.

Part of the fun of building model cars is building something nice from a kit with issues. My biggest issue with this kit was the rear bumper. At least on the kit release I got the rear bumper was a little too wide like it was for a 1/24 scale model instead of 1/25. Looking at your kit it seems you didn’t have that issue.

Told ya on the 1st vid..you'd have to take that rear section off....the chassis is a carryover from the old mpc 67 gto..the current reissue " weekend warrior".same kit..that's where the wheelbase difference comes from ...shares pretty much the same interior , engine, chassis , wheels etc..this tooling goes way back into the 70s and changed hands a few times..things got mixed up along the way and this is what results..btw ,that removed chassis piece makes a great filler when repurposed between the core support and grille like the real cars..covers in that empty cove quite well.. Love the tire tool you made.

Side note I notice many modellers are still using out of the box chrome pieces for whatever reason and while passable still look toyish no matter how much wash you use. I discovered some time ago Alclad's line of paints and I'll say this, their chrome process bar none defeats everything about stock toy chrome sprue/runner stuff. Oven cleaner removes that cheapo chrome in minutes and the metal line of Alclad is light years ahead of stock plastic chrome, their Candy line makes Cars really pop as well using that over the chrome process. It takes a bit of time but I strip all that fake chrome off sprues now and use either Alclad or AK Extreme exclusively. Try it once and see, you can see paint tests of every kind on Barbatos Rex you tube channel and he goes in depth although a tad fast which has slightly less results than proper dry times but he does it to get the idea across. Take care all Great video!
