We are getting caught up at Garagemahal, take a look at the 1:20.3 scale power poles! AND Trains are running!! AND Karyn is modeling 1;32 scale interiors!
After getting even more stuck inside, between COVID 19 and the earthquake and now the pseudo hurricane we have been stuck in a lot this summer! Usually with the power on but not always. With power poles down out in the street research on modeling power and light poles was easy! Just don't step on the wires!
After a week of modeling by window light and battery lights, we were thrilled to have power again. I spend the week cutting out parts as my soldering iron sort of needs electricity to work.
I found a great little casting to use as the light shade on Amazon:
A CBH Radial Brass Hardware Backplate Washer
www.amazon.com...
Karyn built the transformers from copper brass and wood.
Karyn is also building interiors in 1:32 scale. And WOW DO THEY LOOK COOL. Based on CUTEBEE Japanese kits, Karyn kit-bashes and scratch builds to make them much better!

Timothy M hi And gee thanks wow. Remember the old saying “ the more things change the more they stay the same”? Well that also means the more things stay the same the more they change. Case in point: 2020. Earthquakes, wind storms, fires, even pandemics are all Inevitable. Yet still unexpected. As for us we were on similar paths and because of KZbin those paths crossed. And so here we are, still doing what we have always done, but now together. And that has really altered what and how we do things. So the show has changed a lot while really staying the same. Hum.. or not. No matter. Thanks!!

It’s almost amazing that no one was hurt in this windstorm. It happened in the middle of the night and a lot of people were asleep at the time although it tended to wake you up! But a couple of houses were smashed by fallen trees and fortunately no one inside was hurt. But come in the morning they were trees blocking almost every road. I can’t imagine the destruction head there been cars on the street, other than the parked cars that were destroyed

The tornado ripped five hundred year old oak trees out of the ground..The property took direct hit, you could follow its path. Those fancy traffic light poles that are streamlined aluminum designed to withstand hurricane wind were blown away. Those transmission lines with their aluminum poles bent over and stayed bent, total scrap. The switch yard scene with the lighting and the crickets chirping was really nice, as was the apartment scenes. So why does the LED lights need 3v verses the incandescent needing 12v? I thought the LEDs could run on 12. My outdoor low voltage system has both types of bulbs on it. (PS: That first apartment scene must had been Scandinavian with that glassed in bathroom! I actually saw they have that on one of those house hunting shows!)
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 4 жыл бұрын
The LEDs run on 3 volts. Most LEDs have a dropping resister to lay them run on 12 volts. Even the led strips have one resister with every LED. So a 100 led strip has 100 resistors. Which use more power, like three times more power than the LEDs! So I’m using just LEDs. And a tiny little half amp 3 volt supply that can run all of them.
@FunAtDisney
@FunAtDisney 4 жыл бұрын

The "ladder grabs" on the poles were typically ONLY used by telephone companies. Take a closer look on the prototypes as to the locations and how high up they go on the prototypes. Just up to the lowest set of wires, telephone wires. Above that are modern day cable TV wires, Then higher up is the location of lower voltage distribution to homes and businesses. Early days had this being three individual wires, attached to three insulators on the poles, not the cross arms in most places. These were two hot wires and a neutral. the two hot wires were 120 volts to neutral and 240 volts to each other as the step down transformers were center tapped on the secondary side. The primary side of a transformer connected to only ONE HIGH VOLTAGE wire on a cross arm atop the pole. Typically there were three high voltage wires on cross arms for three phase power. Some businesses need three phase so they had three transformers mounted on the poles. Very early street lights strung together, a string of them comprised of 120 volt lamps were strung in a group of ten or so and they would be run through a light detector that would turn on a connection to low voltage line, one of the three wires attached to the insulators on the pole proper. These were on the poles as a single third insulator sometimes above the three for home distribution, sometimes under. They picked up the ground from the neutral wire for the home distribution. These were turned on by early photo detector circuits and relays. Much, much earlier had separate power lines from a distribution center only to power the street lighting and turned off and on remotely every day and night. Poles with transformers had ground wires running from the transformers to ground rod beside the poles. All transformers had a fused connection to the high voltage that could be opened with a long pole. Some locations had knife switches atop the poles mounted on double cross arms that would connect to a lever and pole that could be locked at the bottom of the pole. This was to disconnect or shut off a section of the high voltage. I know this blurb is very brief, and in many locations in the U.S.A. there were variations, but be it safe to say, this is the way it was done. I hope it helps you and if you need to discuss this further, use my "contact me" point at my web site: kitbash.ourpage.org I would enjoy exchanging email with you. Gerry

Gee 😊 thanks!! Wow great history I know most of the poles along the rails were “telephone only” for decades as there was no power in the sticks. Much went in in the 1869’s and 70’s. And were Telegraph. Then telephone. Later power for signals. In my case I’m putting high voltage at the top. Then the light power below that. Then phone below that not on cross arms. I’ll se if I can get to your page!

I had to pause the video at the view of the attic. That red and yellow colour scheme is exactly the same as Hornby models used back in the 70s.

Love old Hornsby! Well old models in general. And the foreign ones are great because we never saw them in the states. Back in the 60’s. Those are Acucraft. But yes, similar look!

Dale, Why are you not running all of your locos by RC so that you don't have to wire your track or ever clean track again !!! And just power only lights in your buildings and track lamps.

Going to do that with some. Need to try it. But I have a lot of locos and it’s expensive. But try one and see

Not meaning to make you feel bad. Just say there are those that have it much worse. They are still using generators, coolers, and ice. Mosquitos are still active.

Great show, I enjoyed it a lot. Why no LED for the big lamps? In O scale, I use standard white 3mm LED, which frost the surface to give the frosted or opal glass look. When off, it looks like some frosted bulb cover. I recently bought but didn't test some EZ lines thread, it seems excellent. berkshirejunction.com/subdirectory/ez-line/ I can relate to the badly translated instructions, my Japanese models only have text in Japanese, and the maker kindly send me a Google translation, which can be quite funny (hopefully the instructions had also a lot of images). The different interiors are great, it reminded me my current project of making furniture for an O scale office.

Hi. There is a link there. But my email is a mess. I get like 200 emails a day. Can’t find anything there anymore. But look for dale angell on Facebook. And message me. Or I’ll try to spot the email. But emails tend to get lost.

As of now it works really good but for some models I’m gonna have to power those little suckers! So I’m looking for something in the way of a powered frog. Sort of like Kermit
