Over the years there have been many changes in how pulpwood is handled from the woods to collection points to the mills. Locally until the late 1980's all pulpwood was four foot lengths with a minimum top diameter of 3.5 inches, much of the wood was still river run for "moderate" distances. Long distance was by rail car and short distances for all situations was by "pallet truck" (mainly still in use for larger construction waste bins). The minimum top diameter was to avoid logs getting broken/stuck in the debarker drums. In the late 1980's the river runs were stopped and logs were cut in eight foot lengths with 3.5 inch top diameter and trucked by semi's to the pulp and paper mills. Today with the reduction in pulp and paper mills more wood first goes to lumber mills where it is debarked and logs with a top diameter greater than 8 inches and in "good form" is cut into lumber. Slabs and off cuts are chipped while small and poor form logs are shipped to the pulp mill. The guy in the office is a scaler - this is typically a licensed profession that is hired as an independent contractor by a company and has legal protections against intimidation by all involved parties.

I know the contest is probably over, but at 11:02 you mentioned "my Dog Buddy". Well, I had a dog named Buddy too and he was such a great friend. I miss him tremendously even 20 years after he passed. Think I will work him into a module I am building at the yard master's office. And great video, simple industrial addition to a 1950's transition era railroad.

Thanks Larry for the details on the pulpwood operations and equipment that was used in that industry. The prototype pictures are always very useful in terms of modeling and attempting to replicate the operation to bring more life and realism to the scene. Always enjoy your videos and your attention to detail! Great to hear that Buddy finally made the cut in your video and on your layout at 11:00, thanks again!

Good video, Larry. I have just found your channel and "my dog Buddy" at 11:00. I lived in south central Virginia for 5 years in the mid '70s. Pulpwood was a big thing in Keysville, VA with multiple truckloads coming through town on their way to the yard south of town. The yard had huge Hyster machines that could lift the entire load off the truck with their cables (much larger than the forklift conversion you have). When the load was set onto the pulpwood car, the Hyster used a large grille to push any logs, sticking out too far, inward. Was a huge yard and there were several of the Hysters working at the same time. The trucks did not have a bed (like ones in the b&w photos) to allow the cables to be able to wrap underneath the load. I helped a friend one day in the woods, and we only did one load. Even as a young man, I recall how tired I was and especially how weak my legs were. It was very hard work, especially on a hot summer day. Those guys who did it all day long had to be in great shape. Thanks for allowing me to share.

Great video with pulp yard explanation- spent many hours with my grandfather, a NS station master who managed a pulpwood yard for the line measuring and record keeping in addition to his other rail duties for almost 50 yrs. His service from 1918 to 1967. Brought back a lot of memories- your modeling was dead on! Enjoy your channel and skills!
@TheDCCGuy2 жыл бұрын
Did he measure the load to calculate the number of cords or something else? This is a question that comes up frequently when pulpwood loading is discussed. Thanks
@vannrollins94642 жыл бұрын
@@TheDCCGuy yes he measured the load prior to unloading the trucks which was done by hand, pointed out area to load on train car, your train car types look exactly like the ones used. He would then prepare the company check, return with check verify loading and pay-, only received logs on certain days as many as 6-8 loads per day, multiple empties were staged on the yard siding. Multiple trains per day went through his station, he had 7-8 sidings along with a freight warehouse and a Y turnaround under his control. This was a junction for two lines one allowing for routing changes from east west to north and south. Initially he used nothing but telegraph but later he had the only phone in the area for years

11:00 Larry what is it with our dogs and being jealous of the other at times, like little children? Right now when you said my dog Buddy, I had to include both Lacy, and Harley in my comments or my ankles would have been a snack for them. I watched a previous video where you showed the making of the pulp rack loads and was inspired. It also brought back memories of driving past the P & G paper plant in Mehoopany, PA early in the morning watching the 24hr operations going on from a distance, massive!

I remember reading somewhere that pulpwood logs were either 4' or 8', depending on how they were loaded. If it was a big commercial operation with machines, they used 8'. If it was local farmers bringing them in with their trucks, it would be 4'. Apparently a man could lift a 4' log by himself, but the 8' was too heavy. My Dog Buddy 11:00 !!

Great job! Having worked in the mountains and cutting and storing large piles of wood, I recommend putting something resembling a couple of t-posts at the ends of your to-be-loaded lumber piles. In reality the piles never end that cleanly unless they're butted up against something. I love your scene! Where's Buddy? I don't see him resting on the porch.

This is a very simple thing it seems that my son an my self can add to the layout we are slowly building. He enjoyed the view of the shack that you used. I liked the guy used on the porch as his style fits in with the clothing of the time 11:00 to help keep things era correct. Unfortunately we had a incident with our layout one evening an had to redo some things as “ my dog buddy” decided he wanted to be apart of the action, an jumped onto a chair onto our layout. Had a very Godzilla moment as he stormed around the layout knocking things over. My dog buddy is now no longer allowed to be anywhere near our layout.

Larry, Another interesting video. There is a paper mill on the line I model that has a chipping operation onsite and receives a lot of pulp logs. They unload with a crane not unlike the one you show in the last historic photo. Google Earth shows the crane unloading in a 2016 satellite image. Not sure where the logs come from but they come from somewhere even in 2022. By the way my dog Buddy thought it was great that you mentioned him at 11:01. He is a min pin and he was wondering what kind of dog your Buddy is?

That was a great way to add an additional business without too much effort for switching. The only detail that is missing is the wheel ruts, maybe a puddle and the access road the truck used to get in there, which could be a dirt crossing coming in from the edge of the fascia. At the end of the pulpwood stack you create a heavily used turn around for the trucks. You need some signage.
@TheDCCGuy2 жыл бұрын
The access road is there just comes in further down on the left beyond the last pulprack. As for mud puddles, I model August 1957-so hot and dry even the flies choke on the dust out there. I do need to add more details and sawdust/wood chips.
