I'd been thinking to actually build a smallish tensile structure using Sketchup to model the surface. What's the 'missing part' of the process whereby I'd be able to generate a 2D pattern for the skin to a tent- or sail-maker for real-worldfabrication, or perhaps do it myself? I like your no-nonsense real-time improv going through these demos. It's exactly what I'd hope to see from a live tutor, detailed enough to boost me far enough up the learning-curve to feel I can jump in on my own without a lot of frustration, yet they move along in an ADHD-friendly pace.

Hi Justin, prior of using soap skin or curviloft I always have a problem with curves. When I join (weld) the curve and use curviloft everything is ok, but If I delete curviloft and do it again the curve is not welded anymore and I need to do it again - you know this take time, especially if the curve is made of many parts. Can you advise how to weld the curve to remain welded forewer; or as long until I decide to explode it. Actually this issue appears all the time. Would appreciate your advice very much. Thanks T.

@@Thesketchupessentials Hi, sorry my English, maybe I didn't know how to express myself, what I want to know is if you know how to separate or explode a curved rectangular tube and place it on a plane and then send it to cut, let me explain better, I have to make a spiral staircase and the side tubes where the steps are supported are 40 millimeters wide by 300 millimeters high, this type of tube does not exist and I have to make it myself, I have made them but straight welding the 4 sides, now if the I try to curve after straight facts they deform or break, I worked in a company in Brazil and they will design these pieces for us to assemble them and a rectangular tube was formed with its curve, that is, the plates were already made by the plasma cutting machine I cut with their curves so that when they were assembled they formed a spiral in a tube, if you understand me, how can I do this of taking something curved to flat, in the CNC method the pieces are curved on their edges but they are flat on their surface surface, in this case no, the sheets or pieces are curved at the edges just as their surface is curved, I hope this time if they understand me, I hope I can do a tutorial on this cutting technique since it would be super important for me and my work, thank you very much

Hey, I have a question - I am currently trying out soap skin and I am following your instructions step by step. (thank you for being so awesome). However, when I try to change the x /y ratio from 1 to perhaps 5 - the form changes (which I want) but sketchup eventually dissolves the shape as if the x /y factor would have been changed to 100 or so. I am left with a blank sketchup file. I am currently using SketchUp 2019 pro. Any ideas to solve the problem? Thanks in advance :)

Hey. I have been working tutorial and all was good up to the point where I tried to change the X/Y ratio to 20 on the first and second model examples. I entered the value of 20 on both and when I pressed enter, it glitched heavily and then the entire model disappeared from the screen? Maybe I did something wrong, but I followed your video to the letter. Any advice would be great and thx for your great tutorials. By far the best I’ve seen anywhere.
@Thesketchupessentials5 жыл бұрын
No idea - how complex is your shape? Have you tried it with a simpler shape?
@howardlloydcreative68435 жыл бұрын
TheSketchUpEssentials Hey. The shape is the first tensile structure in your tutorial. Exact copy as you drew it. Also I tried it with the elongated tensile structure and it did the same thing. It’s totally weird. The model starts to glitch then it stretches both up and down and then disappears. What’s left is the legend box associated with the plugin in top left with numbers going crazy. I tried it several times and the same thing happened. I’m not sure if it’s down to SketchUp Pro 18 or whether I should reinstall everything. Thx for getting back to me btw.

If I wanted to create a banner that wraps around a sphere object which tool is best to use? curviloft has crashed my file before out of the blue. I also made the banner using lines so I basically need to fill in the blank space and make it more realistic.
@Thesketchupessentials7 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure because I don't know exactly what you're trying to achieve, but you could try an extension like Flowify (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmWZdIKIgq2tfbM). I'd recommend saving often when doing work like this, because sometimes SketchUp will crash when doing work like this. Let me know if that works!
