When you added the black, the transparent terrain washes. It flowed from the top, collected in all of the cracks, crevasses and creases. It extenuated the texture of the plaster landscape. It brought out all of the tiny details. Those same tiny details would have been filled in, covered with thick full strength house paint. The more texture you can bring out the better. Nature is anything but smooth. I have never understood why people say cleaning an airbrush is hard? My old and I do mean old, Paasche airbrush. I received it as a birthday present when I was 13. It is the old H series single action. I have used every type of paint. It has to have sprayed a 55 gallon drum of paint. When I was painting RC helicopter canopies, I used automotive paint. Even with that, it took less then 5 minutes to clean. When I was a kid, the painter who taught me, he said when you think you have thinned the paint enough, add double the thinner. When you were painting Mother Earth, slopping the washes on, the messier, less thought, more action, makes it look real. Totally random how it flows, finds the cracks, texture to flow into. Mother Nature hates straight lines. She did not break out the painter tape to paint the world. So why do we? Can you list your top 3, 5, 10 colors you use? I have some paints on hand I would like to use up before I get more. See if I have similar colors. I have about 30 bottle's of earth tones, browns, yellows, greens, gray's. Your series of video's should be put on DVD / Blue Ray as a how to. I have to watch several times to catch most of what you are teaching. Thanks Buzz.

Extra bottles of paint can be turned to dark earth colors. I use more black & white than any other color. I use them to tint other colors. Three of my favorite Tamiya colors are: XF- 52 Flat Earth, XF-12 J.N. Grey and XF-79 Linoleum Deck Brown. Cheers.

Glad to see I'm not the only person who paints their grass muddy, yorue spot on with what you say - IPA is an amazing medium for pigment especially with Weathering powders. If mixed properly with powders it makes a paint which leaves absolutely zero brush strokes and dries within moments.. You can then dampen a fan brush or flat brush with more ipa and use that to 'drag' the dried powders and it gives a amazing streaking effect ❤️❤️ Cheers Mr B!

You won't experience cleaning issues if you only shoot with Tamiya and IPA. IPA as a paint solvent carrier, cleans as it sprays. You only need to back flush and forward flush with a cup or two of IPA and you are good to go for the next color. In fact, you don't even need to worry about laying down your airbrush, with Tamiya paint in it, for a long period of time, because IPA will eat right through it - this is why I use it. I can cover alot of ground fast as well. ;-) Cheers ~ Boomer.

Very pleasing to the eye. Colors are popping through and is a fine impression of the lush vividness one generally finds outside in scale reality, despite it being a bunch of rocks, dirt, and grass. I guess there are drab days due to climate and season but in my experience there's always a layer of vividness, barring mood disorders and other problems. And hues seem easier to judge after a fresh rain or snow melt. Rare nights at dusk everything outside even the vegetation will turn pinkish, like it all glows that way, like such a fine evenly distributed cast of dusky reddish orange pinkish light it makes everything seem to exude that light, could be a little tricky to model. Likely the right job for an airbrush... wonder if by brush it's possible. And that kind of light is comforting too it's like a fuzzy soft comfy layer drifts down to envelop everything and it's almost always quiet those nights.

Then there are the seasons and associated light as well. One must choose to model in the moment. ;-) Cheers.

Exactly. You can leave Tamiya pigment in the air - brush for a month and the IPA will dissolve it in five seconds anyway once you pour it in and shoot. And yes, working on a section on the bench is a dream come true. ;-)

I'm building up layers of GAC 500 in the creek pools and it looks fantastic. It also does not run away on you but holds ground. It's incredible stuff for sure. You can almost sculpt with it, shape it, and level it with a little water. Then throw the brush in a jar of water and it's all good. Did you know that all the Golden product are compatible with each other in every way? You can use the heavy gloss gel with GAC 500 and sculpt beautiful waterfalls with ease as well. ;-)

Whenever you have a new video I stop to watch it. You are truly talented. In your layering, after the static grass application do you ever airbrush matte medium-with or without pigment-to add body or strength to the surface? Fantastic video.
@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I shoot "Matte Medium" through the airbrush but I try to avoid it. I like to reduce my procedures down to a minimum. I do use the airbrush almost every day though for IPA paint. I use the new Vallejo "Matte" coat in the rattle can now for the final last coat over the scenery. Cheers and thanks for sharing!

That’ll be two of those bottles of 500ml. Anyhow, love the layering paints example. Indeed, why ‘brown out’ everything? Although the flat earth overspray is definitely an addition to the palette. The GAC 500 is just looking amazing, even when still wet.

No difference other than the concentrate of alcohol. I use 70% as well, even 50% or whatever is available.

@andrewpalm21032 жыл бұрын
Well, I bought several Tamiya colors as per your recommendations and tried some brush painting of metal Kadee trucks and a car underbody using 91 pct IPA with Tamiya retarder to wet the brush. It got a bit messy but I was very happy with a mix of black and hull red as the base color. (My motivation is that my stock of Polly S is running out.) Also, I did some boxcar weathering with washes of Vallejo Air colors (sea dark gray mixed with earth) and the results were good, though I need to refine my technique as I'm used to washes made from craft acrylics mixed with windshield washer fluid. Now with this video I'm looking at going over some of my layout's gravel ground cover with IPA tinted washes to get more realistic variation in their color. Thanks! Questions: Do you know if Golden GAC 200 hardener improves Golden fluid acrylics' adhesion to hard surfaces? And would mixing those fluid acrylics with a matt medium give them a more matt finish?
@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
Tamiya paint is not designed for the "Traditional" paint brush. Therefore, you won't achieve flat (streak - less) finish if that is what you desire, unless you use an airbrush. The IPA will always cut through the preceding layer when you agitate it with a brush using IPA. You can also use water to thin Tamiya acrylics as well. With thinned washes it doesn't matter how you apply it. All the Golden products are compatible with each other. The variance of Matte to Gloss is indicated with a graph on the bottle labels. The desired finish is up the individual artist. Try stuff on a test piece first and see. Cheers.

Hi, again! I see you use 90%+ IPA. Local stores are down to 71% IPA. I don't know if it is a cost issue or a supply chain thing. Do you have any experience with the more dilute versions of IPA?
@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
You won't notice any difference if you use 50%, 70%, 80%, or 99% IPA. The percentage reflects the amount of distilled water (or concentrate) level of the Alcohol. 99% IPA will strip paint faster than 50% - that is all. As a (water-based) paint solvent, any percentage will do. It's just that you get more bang for the buck with 99% if you thin it with water. Cheers.
@jpkarenko69522 жыл бұрын
@@boomerdiorama Thanks for the reply. I knew about the concentration factor, I just wondered if the "heat" of the IPA affected how the paint works. I remember there are different kinds of Lacquer thinner that produce varying results. Thanks again. I continue to absorb your wisdom. Jim
