You are one of the few youtube teachers that go at the perfect pace, assuming students know the simple parts and explaining the others. I will be sure to keep watch with your videos to complement the precalculus course I am in.Seeing your join date is august 2011, I hope you can find success here and continue making math videos to help a lot of people.

Hi Prof Rob,I love your videos and I have learned a great deal in the last 6 months since I found your channel. My question is about the first word problem involving the price increase. Would we want to restrict the domain to only x values above 50? It seems that it would make sense in the context of this problem to consider values above 50. Or maybe the x-axis represents the increase in price and not the actual price?? I would like your input on this when you have a chance.

Hi, great videos about mathematical modeling or modeling with functions. I would like to learn as much as possible how to solve this kind of problems. Right now I am working with algebra. They don't explain what you explain in this 3 videos. Any suggestion about what to do? What to read? How to develop this skill? Thank you
@WilliamJCrocker13 жыл бұрын
Could you please do one or two of the harder "practice plus" questions once in awhile? Tx BC
@carolinaman50266 жыл бұрын
From my understanding (for the first example), if you wanted to find the price of the items which would maximize profit then you could find the derivative of that equation (4750x-5x^2) where R'(x) = 0. This will allow you to find the local max value since the critical points can be found where the derivative (or slope) of an equation is equal to zero. Therefore, you could find that your price which would maximize profit is x = 475. However, I am not certain that this is correct since I have just started learning calculus.
@profrobbob6 жыл бұрын
You are partially correct. Critical values are found where the first derivative is equal to zero or undefined. A relative maxima is found where the first derivative changes from positive to negative, not where the derivative is equal to zero or undefined. You must validate your conclusion by looking for the sign change. I like that you are working so hard on your studies:):):) Here are my Calculus KZbin lessons organized by chapter and topic, www.profrobbob.com/calculus
@carolinaman50266 жыл бұрын
ProfRobBob thanks for responding. I think I understand what you mean. So first you find the critical value of x where there could be either a local maximum or minimum and then you take the second derivative of the function to determine whether it's concave downwards (max) or concave upwards (min). Thanks once again.
@profrobbob6 жыл бұрын
Caleb Brunson My response was discussing the First Derivative Test, and you are now talking about the Second Derivative Test😁
