You can find the x coordinate of the vertex by doing -b/2a and then plugging the x into the quadratic to find y or complete the square to put the quadratic into standard form. Higher order functions require calculus and an understanding of the first derivative.

I skipped the step of showing how the common factor of 2 can be factored out of 500 and the second term of 2pi*r, becoming 2(250-pi*r), and then you can divide it with the denominator. Thanks for watching so many videos and taking notes:D

2R is the diameter of the semicircle and x is the length of the rectangle. Area of a rectangle is l*w so the area is 2R*X or 2XR.

Professor RobBob, this is another exceptional Video/lecture on Modeling with Functions Part 2. This material is an important part of Calculus One Optimization and Related Rates word problem section. Students in Precalculus should be familiar with solving these type of word problems.

Hello Prof, Thanks a lot for your time and this great help that you are giving to the world. I just have a question that is confusing me. At the end of this video, why did you divide by 2 when there is a subtraction sign between the 500 and the 2pie r. I watched your other videos and I remember you kept warning us from doing that. I think that you said when there is a sign between a constant and a variable we don't cancel or divide, we just leave it the same!!!!

How can I find the maxima without using the calculator? I'm assuming to use complete the square ((-b)/(2a)) to find it, right?
