A superb recovery on the river scene. We all hit disasters when building our model railways. That problem you had with the spill, ended up making you focus more on that area and really finishing it off well, river looks great. The added foliage and weirs has really made a difference. Lots of great pointers in there too. Well done that man, and perseverence paid off, really enjoyable watch. So your narrow gauge is nearly done, with a hint of something 'new' on the cards, interesting. All the best, thanks again for the honest uploads. Brian @ The Angels

Thanks Brian, I was very downhearted when it happened but I was determined not to let 10 months of work go to waste. I actual have a few projects I want to do. But I think next will be building the boy a small layout in his room.

Excellent video. I shall be tackling fast flowing water soon, and whilst you didn't want problems, I'm sort of glad you did. The way you persevered and found solutions has really helped me, and I suspect others. A wise man once said that you don't learn when things go well. Rather when things go wrong. I had read about Mod Podge blown with a straw for ripples - or an air brush if you are posh. You gave me confidence to tackle the water when the time comes. Cheers.

Thanks Peter, I’ve always tried to be honest with my modelling as I too believe the greatest teacher is learning from mistakes, not point in editing a video and pretending it all went well. Someone else mentioned Mod Podge and I recently read an article on mode railroad using it, so it definitely on my to try list.

Really enjoyed this series James, and what a great recovery on your river! Put me off ever using WS EZ water that's for sure, I normally use WS Deep Water Pour and had good results with it. Glad you found an acrylic to give you the ripple effect, gloss Mod Podge blown with an airbrush or a straw also gives the same effect. Cheers Steve

Thanks Steve. Yes I saw an article in model railroad magazine about creating a pond that used mod podge, I have a draw full of the stuff just annoying I hadn’t seen the article sooner.

That sheep’s not dead; he’s pining for the Fford! 😉 Good recovery with the river - though I did like the initial drought-like appearance of the first attempt as it seemed very topical for the summer we’ve been having in the UK!

The layout looks absolutely fantastic. The river looked good at every stage, there’s obviously no one way, overall effect was very effective, the weir effect was spot on. Years back I used some bronze metallic paint(small amounts )in layers mixed with greens, blues and browns and it brought the river to life, made it shine above its surroundings. Glad I chanced on this, might copy the twisty look in future 👍👍👍 All the best, Darren

Thanks Darren, i like the idea of the bronze paint might have to try that on something thanks for the tip.

Great comeback with the river! Ive always used Realistic Water for any features ive done and it was quite simple. I like the stippled silicone effect - really puts some movement into the water. Near the end of the film, where you had all that dark grey river bank, it looked like there had been a grass fire and the ground was all scorched! Now, I bet you cant replicate that when you want to 😆

Cheers Iain I never noticed until now but yes it does look like that and no I bet I can’t do it again 😆have to call that one a happy accident

One good way I’ve found for getting ripples is gloss Modge Podge. It’s quite inexpensive, but it works well. The only thing to bear in mind is that you need to do at least three coats for it to look good.

Thanks Terry, there’s still the area around the sidings to do which I’m working on. I also ideally need to put signals in to protect the level crossing but that’s something I should have thought about before doing the scenery 😬

Can you use a heat gun for the resin? Cheers for the insight.
@WesternSignalman2 жыл бұрын
You can use a heat gun on the EZ water, I’m not sure about the deluxe materials one I think that was recommended to manipulate before it cured.

Nice recovery! just a quick question, how long did it take for the varnish to cure? I have an area with a overflow pipe, approx 6" x 3" so not really worth buying a water product as have plenty of varnish here already :) also whats the colour on your static grass please :D
@WesternSignalman2 жыл бұрын
I did about 5 heavy layers, not too thick and left a day between each coat. The static grass is a mix of green scenes autumn and late summer 4mm peco autumn 2mm javis autumn 2mm. And there’s some green scenes straw 4mm in places
