@ModelMinutes27 күн бұрын
There are lots of different ways to do hills, some are a bit more permanent than others (like chicken wire and wooden spacers) whilst ones like that shown in this video are a bit more lightweight. Other people use different kinds of foam and carve it to shape and apply filler over the top to make it more rigid

Lovely job Matt.. just goes to show (again) how skills from one area can cross to another. One question (and I did email Hornby about this with no reply) is that some dioramas set in vintage periods - which this isn't - look too clean. With horses being the main mode of transport and in commercial use (milk floats, ploughing etc) there is no 'detritus' from horses, and no guy shovelling it up to use on his flowerbeds or sell. Something for a 3D print maybe?
@ModelMinutesАй бұрын
Some excellent points! I wasn't going for anything too specific, just a bit of a mix of things based on what I had in my storage box. But yes, I see what you mean, there are a lot of railway models that are very "clean" (which I suppose is completely fine as modellers are free to create their projects however they want) but those who want to create more rundown or dirty scenes are somewhat disadvantaged by the mainstream manufacturers. This is why 3D printing is so great, it is possible to create these things if they are not supported by the companies :)

I had no idea that you were into model railways as well - I've been watching your Airfix builds for years. We're like one of those 'sliding doors' situations: Hornby and Airfix as boys, then life happened and you're back doing both (and showing the world how it's done through a medium that we'd never have imagined as children) while I have time for neither! All of my old trainset stuff has gone, and I have a huge stash of aircraft and ship kits, from which I ought to try to dig something out and build over Christmas. I wonder... Awesome job on this micro-build - I guess the skills cross-over for glueing, painting and weathering helps.
@ModelMinutes26 күн бұрын
Yes, it would certainly seem that is the case. One day I would like to be able to have a "proper" layout, but will have to stick with model kits for the moment

That was a great idea. After a seen this video a want to rebuilt my small layout(110x50cm) to modules like that. It can be standalone display track, or connected to another layout module. It's really good idea. So my locomotives and carts is old. From 1990, but locomotives are working very well.

@ModelMinutes20 күн бұрын
I think it comes down to practice and observing what things look like in real life. People forget that trees mostly grow quite close together but in model railways put them in odd positions evenly spaced, which unless it is a plantation won't look quite right. Trees are also really big and we forget how big they are, so there is always a bit of a balance trying to get something to look right and be accurate
@chuckmaddison292420 күн бұрын
@ModelMinutes The tree thing is like my hill/ mountains. I made mountains but on the layout looks more like rocky hills.

It looks a lot of fun, and the outcome is excellent. Sadly, model railways passed me by in my youth due to frequent moves around the world (“navy brat”). Nowadays whilst I have the time, I have invested in the scale modelling side of things and will probably stick with that. However, never say never…

@ModelMinutes27 күн бұрын
I've heard that track rubbers are going out of favour these days as they are abrasive and effectively damage the track, which then means more dirt collects on them. I think electronic cleaning methods mixed with solvents like IPA are the more favoured methods which have been explored by other channels

Some nitpicking (and look at it as a compliment when I see something and think about it long enough to care about these things): The wooden fence might look more realistic with straight instead of curved sections between the posts. (note to self: Finally free up some space and at least build an Inglenook with some industry around it!)
