This is a really cool idea to store certain engines or trains that are special to you when you're not running them.

This is a great idea for someone that is in the early stages of planning/building a model railroad layout, but wants to experiment with scenery or jump ahead to some of the finer detail work. You can build a small shelf diorama for displaying a favorite locomotive . Rolling stock. And then you get to work on building scenes before the big railroad is ready for it. Or you also get a sense of “finishing something” by building a little scene, knowing that the larger project will take lots of time. I considered building a little T-Trak module or something just to work on scenery, but this is a cool idea too.

The really cool thing about this idea is that you could theoretically hang a bunch of these floating shelves up all around the room and create a working model railroad that spans however many dioramas depicting whatever you want. Liked and Subbed 👍👍

Two years ago I was handed the wonderful gift of my first grandson 🥰and, having wonderful, happy memories of my own childhood railway, I feel that with a little persuasion the pair of us might be heading down that magical "track" together soon. But, even if I don't get anywhere near the quality of your endeavour, I can safely say the enjoyment of watching just this one video of yours has been an absolute joy. What a talent, and what mastery in the art of teaching you possess. It is truly outstanding. Added to that, your detailed references and links totally cover every aspect to accompany the outstanding recording of the build. Now excuse me while I return to your library of videos that I know will meet all my expectations of seeing a master craftsman at work. BTW I have no regrets if the above review sounds too cheesy. Take a bow 👏👏👏

Mate do it!!! I was so fortunate to become a father a few years back and I've now built two small layouts (one that goes around our Christmas tree, and one based on some books my daughter loves to read) and she LOVES watching the trains going round and now is starting to help me with the hobby :) she's 4.5 years old and I did the layout for her second birthday so don't worry it's never too early :) Best of luck, and thanks for the comment that echoes my feelings about hobbying with my daughter :)

If I could make one suggestion: instead of using relatively expensive Vallejo paint for the ground, you could use a big bottle of some craft paint, like Apple Barrel or Craft Smart. Vallejo makes excellent paints for scale model and miniature painting, but there are far cheaper alternatives for rough work or big patches of scenery.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The watered down washing up liquid helps the glue to soak in rather than bead on top of the powder-like surface. Superb! Lovely scene beautifuly created. I'm an ex railway modeller, now, buildings, cars, tanks and anything else that I find interesting to build. Working on my first diorama at the mo (desert scene). Great to see your techniques. In a village near Totnes, so if I see some guy taking pictures of a shelf in a field, I'll know not to interrupt!

Thank you! It’s great that you have kept up with the modelling and I’m sure you’ll go back to railway models at some point! Dioramas are nice little projects and not quite as daunting as an entire layout. I do get some strange looks when taking the photos!! I might see you around soon 👍🏻

@@DartsideScenics your other diorama call “end of the line” I found very haunting and made me quite sad, I’m 70 years of age and as a teenager worked for BR at Watford Junction Carriage and Wagon sheds where we changed wheels and fixed Hot boxes on mainly goods trucks, I also got the chance ( unofficially) to drive a DMU from Watford to Rugby Works for a repair job, I also spent time with the shunter moving stock around the station sidings “ including the Royal Train” which we pushed into the shed to have its brakes replaced. I miss those days terribly… the sounds and smells will never leave me. Thank you for recreating the past in such detail…. Andrew

@@DartsideScenics I’m afraid that would be impossible as I’ve lived on a 42’ Narrowboat for over 20 years and I can barely move with the accumulated junk I have onboard ( not real junk just men’s stuff, tools, paint, wiring, plumbing, spare parts etc etc, if I ever won the lottery I’ve promised myself to find-convert an old Railway Carriage into a little home and pay a Preservation Line rent to have it put on a siding so I can hear, see and smell times gone by… no harm dreaming eh.. 👍🏻

A superb diorama and so reminiscent of the Dart Valley Railway. The photography outside Totnes was the icing on the cake! I loved watching how you resolved different areas of the model. So beautifully made, I will be watching more of your videos.

Also for the archway on second bridge, you can paint the brick with light colored paint in small sections and then wipe off the paint. It'll leave the paint in the mortar sections. However, practice on a scrap piece until you can do a good enough job.
