The worst snow our area had since 1965 was in 1971(?). It started snowing around 4 PM (January?) it was 41F. The precipitation turned to freezing rain then sleet, then snow again by nightfall. This coated the ground with ice. It snowed all night 8”, then sleet covered the snow with about an inch of ice. 🧊 @ 8 years old, I was able to walk on top of the snow in spots because the sleet was so thick. Funny note: my father was @ the local country club playing cards and drinking with his buddies and didn’t realize the road was getting treacherous. By 10 pm, they found out and were stuck at the club for the next 3 days. They broke into the club restaurant to get food and slept on the couches in the lounge. My dad caught a ride home on the snow plow (tow truck with chains). Mom was very angry! 😂
@trailguy2 күн бұрын
When I was a little kid a few years after that we had a very similar storm. I could easily walk on the ice coated 8 inches of snow, even my dad stayed up on top with most paces…but not all like me. We are about 30 miles west of dc near bull run mountain. We had lots of big snows from about 75-82, I was born in 69 and just thought it was normal. We made tunnels in drifts, etc.

PS- I'm a retired rural mail carrier, and with the weather being predicted for this winter, I don't miss it at all! There have been some major snow storms I've had to deliver in that were pretty hairy. In my day, rural carriers provided their vehicles. I had an old postal jeep I got at an auction that I drove. No 4 wd but that baby was a beast! One bad snow storm, we were delivering phone books one week, yes, phone books, lol. We loaded our vehicles tforgotmax and forgot about seeing out the back windows too. We all altered our routes to deliver the roads that were steep first, then we did the flatter surface roads due to the extra weight in our vehicles. It helped us get up those hills but hairy going down. On other snow days, we used sandbags in the backs of our vehicles. When I bought a new right-hand drive Subaru, I gave the jeep to my brother who drove that until he saved for a new truck. It lasted for years. It was the easiest vehicle I've ever had to maintain. No electronics and I could change my oil and other fluids myself. There was so much room in the engine compartment you could almost stand between the engine and the walls of the compartment. Fun, but hairy days!

It's always scary when a major blizzard comes with not only freezing temps and brutal winds, but also comes with thunder snow. Definitely weather to stay at home with a book or the tv, and make sure your winter snow supplies are ready--shovels, brooms brushes, ice cutters, salt, sand etc. Also don't forget to have your emergency radio and several flashlights/lanterns complete with batteries in case you happen to lose power. This is just good general advice for the start of any winter season, let alone for one with a big blizzard in the outlook. If you're the type that gets chilly easily you might think about getting a few extra blankets or throws to bundle up!

It will fall apart in central NC; it always does. The only time we get snowstorms in NC is when they DON'T forecast it. The cold/dry air and front and the off-shore low have to hit at EXACTLY the same time for it to happen. The offshore low has to also hang out there for a while for anything to build up because the ground is too warm. Invariably they are out of sync with each other and what little falls will melt quickly.

The best thing to do is do some hard worrying. It'll get you absolutely nowhere and accomplish even less, but for empty heads, it's something to do inside that vacuum. If worry starts getting boring, you can always fret a lot an when that gets old, you can always rely on sheer panic. Panic is always good for the feeble-minded. Remember, worry, fret and panic.

No point in being anxious because the models are all over the place and have greatly backed away from a major snowstorm scenario. Speculators and weather-porn artists like in this video are only helping to get people worried and anxious over an event that will not likely happen.

I remember spending 12+ hours digging my husbands car out and losing my parking spot in Philadelphia. The person who stole it, then put a metal garbage can filled with sand. My hubby was a police officer so he had to go to work. It was parking on one side of the street. He would not let me retaliate. I moved my car out into the middle of the street. After shoveling another 10-12 hours so he could park after work. I then had to find another spot. Over a mile away found a snowed in unused parking spot. Shoveled again…….. and finally parked my car. I never moved it until schools reopened. I was a teacher and schools closed for a week. My school was about 3 miles away when reopened so I walked to school instead of walking to my car and possibly losing another spot. I believe this was my life for another week or two. Now I live in Southeatern Virginia where my home has an actual driveway and very little snow.

I hate to be the contrary one, but the model run he is showing was from midnight last night. The 2 model runs since have both dropped the southern storm. The problem you have if you want to see snow in GA NC and SC is that A. you have to have the cold air in place and the energy runs ahead of the huge trough dropping down with the bitter cold air or it just suppresses it to the south and it just gets cold B you have the storm setting up on the old frontal zone in the gulf and the high pressure is more over the Hudson Bay region pushing the cold air down the east side of the Appalachian Mts. Here in this situation the air is just so cold and dense it is pushing everything south...now in all fairness, the EPS is really bad about holding energy back, so with that bias in mind, it could actually get ahead of the trough...and models are going to change a lot this far out, but 2 runs in a row they have dropped it.

We were at the pic and save, the transformer blew and they closed the store . Lived on seven acres back then . We lost electricity We lost water due to having a well no heat . We were saved from the cold . Had a fireplace. What a magical Christmas that year . My 4 children loved that Christmas .

Cars were backed up for miles so we pulled off for awhile to rest but then started driving again. Went thru Jacksonville over the drawbridge and everything was a sheet of ice, it was so bad I was a nervous wreck! I think the ice went as far as Orlando if I remember correctly. Checked this morning, GFS model doesn't show as much snow anymore. Same for about every single other model. It is way to far out to know anything for sure as these models change every day and we can't be certain a blizzard or winter storm event will happen until at least a week before the event could happen.

I lived in Ottawa in 2008….we got over 4 metres of snow that winter. Multiple snowstorms. I think one in March near 50 cm. I lived as a child through the winter of 70-71 in Montréal….It was just as wild! In Newfoundland, in the early 1970s some ocean snowstorms were similarly intense. I find these storms fascinating, but hate driving in them…and digging out!

I lived through the 93 blizzard in Northeast Alabama on Lookout Mtn. It was like nothing we'd ever seen before. It was called the Storm of the Century. My grandparents were in thier 60's and it was the worst they'd ever seen. The stories I can tell about it on our farm is crazy. Snowdrifts were over my horses heads in some places. I'm 55 now and I haven't seen anything like it since. The 2000 ice storm was terrible as well, but nothing like the blizzard.

2 күн бұрын
Yes, it's been quite some time since we last got a snowy winter here in the NYC area and yeah, I live here/there too. We had a foot of snow the past 2 winters COMBINED, as in 3 inches in 2022-23 and 8 or 9 inches in 2023-24 and in 2021-22 we only got about 15 inches and mind you, 25-30 inches of snow is a YEARLY AVERAGE for NYC's Central Park yet we haven't had even that much snow in a single winter season in at least 4 or 5 years if not more, so we're SO OVERDUE to be dumped on royally with snowstorm after snowstorm.
