This is a segment from a longer video about the complete 80 Year Evolution of the US Army Ranger Squad, and more in-depth discussion about their changing role and the overall structure of the Ranger Battalions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2OUlH2ZqZZ-pdE I decided to release this segment remastered with some new animations because while the modern time period is the most popular on my channel, only about 20% of viewers on the original video actually got to the modern part (probably because of its length and all the earlier time periods at the beginning).

You can thank CAG for that. I don’t think there’s an official designation for that setup, but it’s outside of normal SOCOM issue due to the Department of the Army denying the issuing a full size pistol other than the M9/M17. Jeff Gurwitch of Modern Tactical Shooting discusses some of the issues and politics around the Glock 17 in SOCOM. If I had to guess, those were Battalion purchased outside of the procurement stage.

@@ColdWarShot that man is damn entertaining to listen to. And he’s less likely to runoff on an unnecessary political tangent in the middle of a video vs some others, at least on the unit and gear rundowns that I’ve watched anyway

In practice, they put a lot of weight on red dots versus magnified optics, which tells me a passive aiming backup is a big part of their doctrine in the event active aiming is non-permissible. On the other hand, the Marine Corps Infantry has bet all chips on the VCOG for improved reconnaissance and observation, or suppression by accuracy when employed as by the auto gunner. Two perfect examples of "mission dictates."
@robbell3217

Rangers also dedicate a lot of effort to door-kicking and other direct action ops, in close quarters like that the speed advantage of a red dot/eotech over an LPVO is definitely a factor.

There are plenty of dudes with magnified optics to handle distance and overwatch, while assaulters take down an objective. Ranger Regiment has been ahead of the power curve in this respect since the early 1990s.

Lol you can piggy back an RMR or T2 on a vortex Razor or any scope for that matter. So you don't necessarily have to just stick with a T2 on a unit mount for an EOTech on a riser.

Rangers are the most lethal and scalable direct action unit in the US military. Rangers are unique because they can conduct a special operations HVT raid with a platoon or less, clear a small town/valley with a company, seize an international airport with a battalion, and use the entire Regiment for large scale combat operations. During the GWOT, Rangers kill or captured more HVTs than any other unit including ST6 and Delta. A Ranger company held off Saddam’s Republican Guard at Haditha Dam which resulted in 400 EKIA and 30 tanks destroyed. In comparison to other SOF units, SEAL platoons and SF ODAs simply don’t have enough fire power to do most of the direct action stuff that Rangers do.
@Gearparadummies

75th Bn. has three times as many pipe hitters as CAG and ST6 combined. They were also continuosly deployed for twenty years straight. Last but not least, they conducted raids on their own, with partner forces and other SOCOM/JSOC teams. It's only natural they have the highest tally on enemy combatants killed in the entire USSOCOM. That and the fact that their success rate is one of if not the highest in the entire US military. Let's not forget that even during Gothic Serpent they completed their mission and extracted the HVTs.

@@tigercub2468 I never said the 75th themselves tallied kills. But when GWOT started goong South, particularly in Afghanistan, all combat troops were ordered to report enemy casualties as the old Vietnam War mentality of "We're killing a lot of them=we're winning" started to be used to continue the war. Truth is, they conducted more raids than everyone else, hence they got more insurgents than everyone else.

3:17 idk where you're getting your info but my few years in the regiment, 95%+ of the times we'd be working in small units. 2 or 3 rifle squads on the DA wirh a larger or similar sized element 30/40 kicks off target as a QRF incase things went sideways. Apologies I'm getting off topic. In my experience I have very verrry rarely seen the squad leader, or team leader be the #1 in the stack. I mean if a compound or building whatever had more fighters or were more dug in with fighting positions, then for sure I've seen em stack up as #1 or #2 , but generally speaking, that initial breach and entry the squad or team leader isn't the #1 man. Not knocking anyone at all, just the nature of the animal that cqb is. Apologies for the wall of text. ✌

2:19 That part about all Infantry Officers de-facto having to go through makes Ranger School sounds kinda like the Indian Army's Commando Course. Soldier's that go through Commando Course in IA get to be in the Ghatak Platoon (shock troops of each Infantry Battalion). And while it is technically optional for Officers, de-facto all Infantry Officers have to go through it. Even some non-Infantry Officers from Combat Support Arms (signals, engineers, etc) also go through it.
