49-year-old brown belt here. Just coming back from an injury (one month off). Not too long, but I know that it’s going to take me a bit to get back to it. I’m changing my perspective, too. I’m going to change up my strength training and intensity.

Participation medals. No. Life isn't about rewarding everything. It's a tough lesson to learn and up to the parents to talk them through it. It's what's destroyed the school system. No grades has make kids lazy with putting in effort. I lost many thinks as a kid and it made me deal with loss and it toughened me up. If you kid is done with Jiu-jitsu cause they lost and didn't get a medal, maybe it's just not for them.

The “self defence” is not quantifiable. It is amusing that the “proof” in self defence relies upon the efforts of the competitors. It’s all pretty ridiculous.
