For those who don't know...the first joke about, "I know it's not a table read because all of you showed up!" is a reference to the cast of 6 adults all banding together (like they did on Friends) to get a big pay increase and all make the same pay rate after the show was a hit. To make the point that they were unified, they all called in "sick" to a new episode table read and the show had to shut down for a week until they all got new big pay hikes and came back to work. 🤣

@@cm-fn5sh No. The start of the fourth season all the adult cast members wanted to get big pay raises. Eric Stonestreet had won 2 Emmys by then and was making 1/7th what Ed O'Neill was being paid (since Ed was a known TV star and Eric unknown at the show's beginning.) Once Ed joined the other 5 in solidarity the producers and network had no choice but to give salary parity. They all sat out the first table read for Season 4, Episode 1. Only the kids showed up. Everyone at the Emmy Awards of course would have known this, which is why they laugh so hard. It's a very "insider" joke. Why would the 6 leads of a hit comedy be irresponsible? Trust me, this is the "joke."

This did happen, but the joke is is that actors don't show up to table reads, while the kids do. Everyone at the Emmy would laugh because this happens all the time in TV, the table read is important but not as important as actual blocking rehearsal or filming, so if you had to miss work, you're missing the table read. The writers would not write a joke for a national awards ceremony about how they didn't pay their actors fairly.
