With new technology come new FAILURE MODES.
This 2017 Ford Escape Ecoboost was sent to the auction with "VERY WEAK BRAKES" and a malfunctioning ELECTRONIC Parking Brake.
Next is a 2014 Ford Mustang with DEAD HVAC and Radio controls.
Some Parts will definitely be required...
These failures would NOT happen on an "older" car, and I'm guessing they are NOT cheap to repair...if you can find the often DISCONTINUED Parts!!

Auction cars really are a curveball. When you work at a steady shop you get to know most makes and models and common failure points so when a car comes in with a complaint you’ve got a basic idea of what direction to head. Auction cars always come in with these weird random one off complaints that you’ve never seen before. Our shop has a few used car lots that bring us auction cars and man do we find some weird stuff lol

I could see this years ago when I was working on cars. The planned obsolescence is mind boggling. I prefer all manual controls for the HVAC. I never have liked auto HVAC. I just think it is more stuff to go wrong. Give me simple levers, cables and vacuum servos for the HVAC and I am good.

Hey Ivan! Quick tip on the Sync modules - I see this a LOT! Always try a super hard reboot first - pull the negative, cover battery post with a rag, then short the negative cable to the positive. Good, hard, solid reset! 80% of the time, it brings them back around. I do run across some bad FCIM's but it seems like more often than not a good reset will get it alive again - that first generation Microsoft programming is flaky at best.
@zackclark2214
@zackclark2214 2 ай бұрын
I agree that on the sync systems your recommendations could help remedy a sync concern. This concern isn’t with the sync system. This module provides inputs from the user to the ACM, the HVAC module and APIM. If this module isn’t communicating the sync system can still operate but will not receive inputs from the FCIM thus those features connected to those buttons will be inop.

Very objective diagnostic approach, Ivan! It's exasperating that perfectly good cars get totalled by electronic boards that are discontinued too soon - they don't want these cars fixed! Many of these boards (at least, for the European market), are made by "Ford Electrónica", just a few miles from where I live. They are perfectly able to build replacement boards, if they want to.

I had a 2015 Ford the other day come in for pads and rotors. After I did the pads and rotors on the front the pedal had a softness ( did not test drive car before). After taking to the customer he thought the pads would fix that issue. Eventually the fix was activating the abs with scan tool a couple times. After finding the issue I googled it and it seems to be common. I alldata and googled it just to see if the abs solenoid needed replaced but I guess everyone had success with just activation. Time will tell and if it comes back I'll report. At least Ford is more reliable then Chrysler. I looked at a 2019-20 jeep with oil issue. Lady take it to the dealership every month because the car shuts off and flashes oil warning. Dealer told her oil change will fix it, she had 5 in 7 months. Seems that engine has ring issues and the jeep has 45k on it

I fully agree that the discontinuation of parts and modules is a huge problem. With that in mind, I already bought used modules (really cheaply) for my 2014 Silverado for the future. I'm buying other parts that are likely to need replacing some day. Buying them before any emergency lets me find them at much lower prices and I won't be faced with "parts shortages". I'm getting most parts at 60-80% cheaper than "emergency" prices. (Full set of 8 fuel injectors, $90 ). Emergency price? $1,000. That was my biggest discount. New Radiator? $100 vs $350-450.

I take a wide view. We had this same argument about 20 years ago in the world of vacume tube guitar amps. Solid state/digital amps are non-serviceable throw away junk, while point-to-point wired tube amps are still very much alive and thriving. BUT....the functionality that can be put in the customer's hands for the PRICE makes it a no brainer, since tube amps are a big buck proposition. That it's throwaway is what makes it affordable. It's similar with cars - we can make a car that's 100% serviceable and durable, but it'll cost $200k and nobody will buy it. I too prefer high quality stuff to low quality disposable, but I admit that I'm often a cheapskate and I don't want to pay for it. And I'm spoiled enough to want all the functionality that the panel in that Mustang offers. In short it's our own fault as consumers to a large extent.

You seem to be throwing around some rather descriptive terms lately; "disposable cars" "planned obsolescence." I couldn't agree more. The 'ol Marquis needed the infamous plastic manifold. I was told at the dealership the manifolds for the later model Grand Marquis hasn't been discontinued. (2006-11) I had to unbolt the metal crossover and reuse that with the new plastic part. A long time Toyota parts counter guy once told me that US law required them to carry every part for a car for least 10 years after they stopped making that model. But (per your example of not being able to find a module for a 2016 GM) I wonder if this is actually enforced? Yes, supply chain impacts from Covid is still an issue. But… it seems that in recent years, many companies (and people) are pushing the boundaries of the legal system because… they’re aware that they will most likely get away with it. It’s a slippery slope that will be difficult to reverse.

The smoke on start up is not normal and is likely a turbo turbine shaft seal leaking into the exhaust. This requires turbo replacement. The vacuum pump has failed as per your proper diagnosis. You did miss that you also had cam codes for the intake cam. This could mean when you pull the pump off, the cam will be damaged due to the pump locking up. With the oil being nasty my hunch is that this engine hasn’t been maintained and the non serviceable filter in the head has been plugged and has starved the pump of oil causing the failure. This has also caused starvation of oil to the turbo thus also the cause for the seal problem/ prob also has shaft play. These engines are also known for their coolant intrusion of the cylinders due to the poor designs of the block that has been updated. My recommendation would be to pull the pump and start the car check and make sure you have good oil flow to the pump and no cam damage. If no oil to the pump recommend a long block, turbo, and oil separator as the separator is like plugged and will cause the new engine to leak oil.

I finally requested another van and refused to drive it. Mechanics could not get it to do it but it took my boss several attempts to notice the issue after he almost ran a red light. No one knew the cause. I think there was an electrical issue with it or some type of vacuum failure. It was a mystery.

Planned obsolescence.. Yep. Applies to everything now. I bought a 60 month battery for my car in January of 2023 and today I replaced it again. Only lasted 13 months. I got a better battery this time, from Excide. The engineers seem to expect us to buy a high priced item that only lasts a year or 2. Maybe 4 to 5 years max. Cars now in the wrecking yard are 2 to 3 years old with modules that are unavailable. Cheaply made.

I average 10 years out of a battery. I always plug the car into a battery minder when I park it. ALWAYS. Stops sulphation.
@cclngthr

@@Runco990 A battery should last even without being plugged in to a battery tender. Where I live, we can't have electrical cords strung from the building to the parking lot overnight (it is an apartment complex). I can have a cord out only for a few hours if I need to work on the car for minor things (it is a violation of the lease for other things). A tenant cannot charge an EV on site here either. There are no EV electrical systems here.

@@cclngthr To be fair, while a battery tender prevents sulphation and makes the battery thus last MUCH longer, in my case I sometimes don't need to drive my car for a long enough time that just the normal electronic draw will kill the battery. However, a little solar panel will also keep it full if you park outside. You may not NEED it, but it does extend the life of the battery. They ain't cheap no mo! 😁

I realise that this comment is 2 days since the video post but I agree with the planned obsolescence however there will be people out there that will make an industry out of this which will destroy planned obsolescence (which will hopefully make vehicle manufacturers wake up. The other way is to stop buying these new garbage boxes.Cheers Ivan great vid as usual.

Don't feel bad about 10 year old cars having discontinued parts. I was doing auto body repair and refinishing in the mid to late 1970's. I had a friend who wrecked the hood on his 1973 RoadRunner in 1976. The hood was discontinued, forcing me to use a low quality used hood for the repair.

I don't think this is "planned" obsolescence, just cost cutting. It's simply cheaper to integrate as much as possible into larger modules that communicate serially, rather than having a bunch of individual buttons/LEDs/actuators/cables/etc. And at least in my experience, these modules are reasonably reliable (with the exception of some defects/anomalies like bad solder joints and capacitors, or water intrusion). It still sucks when the odd one does fail and the part is discontinued/backordered, but every vehicle has parts which will be discontinued eventually (computerized or not). It might be a little easier to make aftermarket replacements for non-computerized parts, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. I recently discovered a company that makes an aftermarket serial/CAN module (Idatalink) which can integrate an aftermarket radio with newer vehicles (retaining factory Sat radio, Ford SYNC, HVAC controls, etc.). Granted, you'd have to purchase a new radio, dash kit, and wiring harness as well to make that work, but it is an option in case you can't obtain a replacement FCIM (which I'm certain you can, if not brand new from Ford, there will be tons in junkyards and on eBay for many years to come).

You could probably jerryrig a hobby microcontroller. But it would take time to reverse engineer the logic. And that's how some of these cars will be saved, at least the ones worth saving.

My F150 does that, too, but not as bad. But it's the brackets under the steering wheel. No flood. Just poorly made parts like they couldn't be bothered with proper surface protection. I just spritzed mine with aviation grade Corrosion-X. It's a much thinner film than something like fluid film and doesn't stink.

Planned obsolescence? Oh, for sure. Over engineering the simple things like parking brakes, radio and hvac systems for example is the dumbest of ideas IMO. But that escape though, it looks like the last owner changed the oil maybe once a year. I'm willing to bet that the high-pressure fuel pump tappet and cam shaft are severely damaged. Not to mention, the turbo as well. It may already be too late to save that engine.

My first thought is that there might be a market for repairing discontinued parts like this. However, how much money could you possibly make? Yeah, it's unobtanium, which drives up the price, but is anyone going to invest a lot of money into a 10 year old car on its last legs?
