Modern House Part- 11 Second floor steel, wood beams and a bad case of wrong-side-of-the-tab-itis

Rolling on this week with lots of crane time setting wood and steel beams. One of the more satisfying parts of the job for me even when unforced errors cost me time towards personal goals. It's all part of the job in the end and there is still satisfaction to be found in digging yourself out sometimes. It's just incredible to watch this modern home go up with one man doing the lion's share of the work... like 99.9% of it... with no other extra set of hands than a crane. I don't know how you do it... or I wouldn't if you weren't showing us. Seriously... with as much as it rains there and all those incredibly heavy steel beams... there ought to be a category in the Guinness Book you know? Thanks for sharing this with us. Thanks for all that Tyler!. I really only been posting seriously for four months now and this series has taken up more than half of that. There is a couple other two-part unfinished series on the channel that have done well that you might enjoy. They’re more personal projects rather than work work but the channel is just gonna be a blend of that.

All that preparation for installing the steel beams definitely paid off. Glad you noticed you had that last beam on the wrong side of the tab before you did any more work. Would've been a pain in the butt if you had to tear a whole lot more apart than you did to fix it.

Thanks George, Yeah I just happened to sit down there for lunch and saw it right away. There was not going to be any better time to fix it then right then so I did. The sunny day helped ease the pain a little :-)

Good video, angles and music! When I saw the pallet of Simpson hardware on the truck, just made me wish I had some of there stock, pricey stuff. You made short work of repositioning the beam tab! I was a bit nervous...LOL Good job Jake, stay well!!

I'll sure try, for the main floor which is all cantilevered I have to use the gridlines provided on the plans to work out the lengths. Many of the gridlines are only dimensioned as parallel to each other despite being at an angleso I have to work out the longer length needed to create the angled beams using maths. I work to either centerlines or exterior dimensions depending on the beam location. Since there is so many different size beams combined I then manually subtract beam centers, flange and web thicknesses as well as overall heights when i''m fabricating to ensure everything fits. The second level steel is easier as I can lay out and measure directly on the floor as I lay out windows and other elements to ensure everything has room to fit. This simplifies the process. I make a drawing for each beam with notes and almost always forget to write something down and have to go back and double check everything:-) During all this there is actually quite a bit of cross checking going on as I put it all together, If I physically measure an angled beam I will calculate its angled length back to the parallel length that it would've originated from to double check everything remains correct. There is a lot of that part I don't film because it's kinda boring and usually just me walking around muttering to myself and I need my phone for the calculator anyway:-)

Many thanks for giving us a deepinsight to the never teached practice. I am 30y in a complete different business of analog integrated IC design. But it will you surprise that mental fitness to oversee all the practice hurdless and tricks and apply them at the right time in your planning is very similar. Another question. I see that the paper to wood and steel tolerance is one critical issue at assembly. There is weight stiffness and measurement, sometimes ill thinking. But are there some excenter bolts outside. So you bore bigger on one side and adjust the angle of the excenter while tighting?

I think I understand what you are asking here and i'll try to explain, Assuming you are talking about the bolting of the steel we have a small allowance in hole size to allow fit-up of the parts. Sometimes during assembly I will draw two parts together with a bolt which as you describe can leave it in an unbalanced condition. Please don't worry about this, there is an entire process that I undertake to ensure that all bolts are straight thru the tab and flange and are tightened from the nut side with constant even pressure and without the use of an impact tool. So to be clear, every bolt comes back loose to ensure fit and then is tightened to spec. There is no requirement that dictates bolt head direction in relation to the structure or assembly so I usually choose the side that is is most accessible for me to work from. I would like to add though since I don't provide an explanation in the video that the design is not a stand alone steel structure like a commercial building. The steel structure is bolted together and bears on steel posts on other steel beams but there are large panels of shear walls that infill and add support underneath the beams as well as lots of internal torsion restraint and other drag-strut type connections within the floor envelope that serve to remove focus from the steel connections. For a lot of reasons I choose to assemble this level in this order but I see how it can be misunderstood. Hopefully I was able to explain this well enough, I appreciate the very intelligent concern and I hope you stick around for the rest of the series:-)

OK some more dumb questions… why do you use a router on the cut edges of the big wooden beams. Is it just ease of sliding pieces together?? [edit- just worked it out… to avoid welding seams inside girders!!🙄] There seems to be an awful lot of standing water, does this really not matter?? Do the boards really dry out completely?? Don’t mould spores set in and cause problems years down the line?

You did work it out on both guesses, One is for room the other is for assembly because the edges fluff and swell if they are wet or not when you cut them from unloaded fiber tension. You'll catch me doing cut floor ply seams too to help with wicking and edge swell if you watch close. The house is wet for sure but there is a long open time on the rest of the construction and there's a whole program for air movers and stuff. Not my department tho:-)

Well, it’s not as bad as you think and it really didn’t happen all at once. :-). I do pretty much always work solo, although I team up with a few guys from time to time on certain projects. I absolutely approve of and thank you for the binge watch, 10 bonus points for correct content usage! :-)

Jake, after watching this whole episode I've come to the conclusion that you could be significantly more time efficient if you just wore a rock climbing harness with a D-Ring on it. Instead of going down a ladder, moving ladder, up ladder, nailing other end of beam, you just hook in to the crane and fly over like Peter Pan. OSHA will hate it, but your viewership on KZbin will skyrocket.

[looks over both shoulders to make sure no one is listening].... done it......not reccomended......... will not repeat......:-) i had to trim a tree so i could swing out over the street. got it done but it wasn't crazy fun like I hoped. used a full on safety harness with rear, between the shoulders D-ring so was basically supermaning it. Would have been way better with a climbing harness. Not worried about OSHA but keep it all under your hat anyway:-)
