Modern House Part 12- Details and Beams, tying it all together.

Structural steel members in residential framing open up a lot of possibilities but tying them into a system where everything else is screwed or nailed is just flat time consuming. This week is fitting the final beams together and cutting all the joists for the next level. I probably would've started setting them but I was still waiting on a pallet of skewed hangers to show up and decided to stay on the floor out of the ice. Just to keep it real, the weather makes another cameo this week but also provided the thumbnail at the eleventh hour:-)

The further you get along, the more respect I have for your depth of knowledge. I started out framing some pretty nice spec homes in Bend. One-off designs with a lot of low-pitch shed roofs, hips, etc. This is a completely different world. Mine was all wood, minimal hardware. Fun stuff. The machinery needed for your builds, the metal skills, the patience. I just can’t imagine there are many people like you around. I hope you’re making a killing. Good weather is upon us

All the neighbors here are super chill and really pleasant people. Yeah, it's a bummer but the modern / contemporary across the street almost exclusively looks out the other side of the house into the wooded lot they also own. The windows you see are essentially the upstairs back of that house. The uphill neighbors are bummed mostly because of the amount of light that an all glass facade puts into the forest at night. The view will be somewhat eased with all the green roofs but still. Just to clear it up and affirm what another comment said here- Yes, I am just the framing subcontractor on this project.

It may be that an old man put in new hearing aide batteries but your audio seems louder and more clear today, I like it. Also great camera angles, taking the time to show the router and chamfer work to make a tight wood metal fit, Great shots! Was thinking about the structural engineering costs, then I started looking at all the engineered lumber. WOW, Know they have to be significant! Another Great post Jake! I noticed that too Robert. Could be a couple things. I started shooting and posting in 4k so maybe that? Also, one of my cameras has a different case on it so maybe picks up more sound? I tried using the mic more and it picks up my voice great but it picks up power tools at 9 times the volume and it makes editing almost impossible. I may use it but just for explanations or things that are quieter. Mostly it's just a hassle so it stays in the truck, I have enough to keep track of:-)

Merci pour tout ça, ça a été amusant d'apprendre à filmer au mieux pour me donner du bon matériel à utiliser. En ce qui concerne la maison, oui, c'est difficile avec la pluie et ce n'était pas ma décision de commencer la construction, mais encore une fois, ce n'est pas rare et le constructeur est consciencieux et a un plan pour y faire face. Does the weather there ever not suck? You must wear rain gear thru fall and winter. Great work though. Love that you work alone and are pretty darn efficient. I do carpentry work and prefer working alone. Glad I found your channel.

I'm glad you found the channel too! Yeah, sometimes The weather gets a little lame but if you live here long enough you realize that the rain always sounds worse from the inside of the truck:-) As to working alone, at some point once you've been thru most scenarios you'll realize that you are automatically setting things up anywhere from minutes to weeks ahead of time. No doubt you are already doing it without realizing it and its most likely in how your truck is laid out or your shop is organized. This is just a bigger version of that. I might pick up and throw away 9 chunks of wood and kick the 10th across the room where i'll use it 2 days later. Forgetting things in your truck still cost you time though whether its you going to get it or a helper:-)

No, not being nosy Bob. Thanks for stopping in. Not my house, I'm the framing and steel subcontractors. I have worked alone for more than a decade now and really do prefer it. My equipment really starts to shine for me at this part of the job. For instance, Just this morning I broke down 50 sheets of 3/4 cdx with my forklift and placed it two stories up on the roof at separate ends of a100'+ house in three picks with my crane and put the forklift away in about 35 minutes without rushing or really doing more than following the load up and down stairs. That said I have a gang of other onesy-twosies that I can rally for a hand if I need them and we gang up on stuff from time to time. There will be a 4 of us on a really trick modified A-frame at the end of this coming summer so I hope you stick around:-)

That crane is a Benedini , made in Italy and it is owned by me. There is probably 10 other brands of self erecting tower cranes on the market right now. This one is on the very small end of the scale capacity wise but it fits well into many of the projects I get into. I've said it before but it's almost silly the amount of time it can save you in just a few minutes of use. Keep in mind i've done this type of project over and over for years without one and I know exactly what kind of effort the crane is saving me. I owned a boom truck for 10 years and it's great but not near as invaluable as the Italian job. Plus the boom truck would be near worthless on this site due to the hill. I had a question I meant to ask. Do you have longevity issues with your tools because of all the weather you work in? I saw on one of your episodes where you lubricated all your tools. Just curious

Totally, Corded tools don't last as long but the rough duration hasn't changed much in the last 35 years so you get used to it and stuff times out closer to full power rather than just flat worn out from use so you get the best out of them. Even a battery sawsall works better than a clapped out 30 year old sawsall that got to live inside a trim guys van forever:-) Battery tools are another story though and that bugs me some. I feel that a lot of peoples production levels really suffer from overdependence on them without them even knowing it so I still keep a good mix of corded vs cordless tool in the rotation.

Battery powered tools I love because you aren’t tethered to a cord but batteries present other irritations like always dying when you are on a ladder 😂 or just plain not lasting long at all. I live outside of Houston so we deal with blazing heat and humidity which effect batteries and their longevity. Thanks again and keep up the great work

Good to see you here again Hans, That's remarkably similar to what I'm paying but my coverage is essentially catastrophic with a 7k deductible before any type of payback would occur. Depending on the type of doctor and type of visit there may be discounts of varying levels and in the end only what you pay goes towards the deductible. Never have I ever once gotten anywhere close to meeting the deductible and I've never even heard of sick pay before :-) I've never not been insured though since I was 18 and I'm now in my 4th decade of self-employment. On we go I guess:-)

Hello Jake, that sounds very hard, I've had to struggle, a good 10 years ago I developed a muscle disease that started with a twitching eyelid and my doctor forbade me to drive a car until the problem was sorted out. That meant I was banned from working because I was a taxi driver. It took a year and a half until I got the right doctor and the right medication so I could drive again. With the sick pay I received from the health insurance, I was at least able to pay my running costs (including the contribution to the health insurance company) and my wife had to cover the food costs. With the medication costs due to the muscle disease and my diabetes, I'm at a good $4,000 a year and luckily I only have to pay $400.
