Being a 35 years of service in the Chicago Carpenters,I had the opportunity to work on many things.I always liked working alone .Getting a plan in the morning in your head,it’s amazing how much one man can get done in one day.I miss being able to do it,all the heavy lifting,working in all weather really took its toll on my body.Its fun to see a hard working guy like you.just getter done.

Another great vid. I noticed the third corner glazing window off the bathroom. Odd number rule, 👍 My Dad built our house back in the mid 70’s here in the Okanagan Valley, B.C. I helped the best I could as a 10 year old. People thought he was crazy for using 2x6’s to frame the house.

And now there are some getting built with stagger studs on 2x8 plates so theres no thermal transfer. Dad was a pioneer! Your'e right about the odd number rule, there is actually a 4 corner glazed in the back bedroom but they nixed yet another which would've been 5:-)

Like the floor trusses since they can give you plenty of space for your mechanical systems without having to cut up your i-joists or other standard joists. Pretty clever to put in the plumbing pipes as you're installing them. Less joints to worry about leaking later on. Anyway, another great video. Really enjoy them.
@ShredPile
@ShredPile 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for that, I honestly can't imagine how they would've ever gotten thru there otherwise with 12"oc joists given the size of the acceptable drill zone with the fall requirements. Funny thing though, in chatting to a framer buddy about the issue he clued me in to the fact that sometimes they add rat runs to these systems which can be tricky to install later if you miss them and in my case impossible. Sure enough there was one hiding in the layout. That's the 2x6 you see me sliding into the webs with the pipes.

Jake another masterpiece. I can’t wrap my head around the horizontal hold downs? We use them to join floors together per hurricane code in Rhode Island. Peace my friend
@ShredPile
@ShredPile 5 ай бұрын
Oh yeah, we mostly use them that way here too but in this case they are used for torsion (twisting) control. By tying the steel beam to the perpendicular wood beam and then tying that into the diaphragm of the roof it effectively turns the wood member into a wrench or lever arm that keeps the beam from rolling from the loads that are potentially developed at the unsupported end. They are placed at the last point of contact of a cantilevered beam. It's a really common attachment in steel to steel connections but not so much wood to steel. I've done this same thing in another fashion before and this is way simpler. I hope that all makes sense.

Jambo Jake, thanks again for yet another record of your superlative work. Fantastic progress too....hard to quite speculate just how it will turn out when compete. Honest to god, Jake, you have to consent to undertake a project like this in Kenya - same material mix, in an almost similar topography (forested game-conservation area but sunnier, warmer), and larger (possibly 12-16 ensuite large bedrooms around centralized common-use and service areas on two floors). Have you a timeline to the completion of your current project? And can you get away to these tropics for a couple of days later in this year for an exploratory run? Sorry for the ambush...!! And thanks for today's share.

Jake, could you please explain the various distances of the joists and trusses and the reasoning behind them? Some are at 12” on center, others 16” and 24”, from my perspective. Thanks for the great content.
@ShredPile
@ShredPile 5 ай бұрын
Sure Miles, I'll do my best. The first 30-35' of both ends of this level are actually the roof and other than a curb as far as it goes so the spacing is dependent on the span and loading. I believe there is also some 19.2 spacing in there as well but I think most of it is in the part that is floor for the upper level. Again there, span dictates spacing. The "floor trusses' in the driveway end of the house were designed to allow the void for the rain drain piping which is going to work well. that area is somewhat split between eco roof and roof terrace so the trusses were slightly different and clearly marked for location. Overall, some of the areas can get really tight and everything needs to go in in the right order or you can't get it in. There's also been a few changes made so I have to be careful working between the new S-pages and the original TJI layout.

Is the bottom end of the stair stringer being held up by nails alone or did you put a support under that lower end?

There's a ledger, blocking and screws at all the bottoms and blocking and screws at the tops. I wasn't sure how the bottom of the bottom set was going to play out so it will be done in place.

@ShredPile

It helps stop the hanger from singing later on if stuff moves around. It doesn't happen often but its difficult to fix if it does and it's easy enough to glue now so I do:-)
