Never really understood how useful a small tower crane could actually be on a regular house job site until I watched this house build. Allowed you to do it by yourself. And even more importantly, safely. Definitely worth investing in one in your line of work.

It really is indispensable, I will say that knowing several other ways of getting it done without one definately helps me be more productive with it though. This house is a little decieving as well in that much of it is actually inaccesseable to a normal boom truck due to the hill and the length of the house making it double the handy:-)

Thanks I thoroughly enjoyed the video ... I find your videos to be a work of art ... they leave me with a pleasant sensation as all of my senses are engaged starting with the deer in the beginning.

Hey Jake Greg here so glad to see you back at the modern house it’s been a while . I’ve followed you from the beginning of this project can’t wait to see how it turns out but I guess we’re still a way off from that.

Thanks Greg, I was up there today helping with some soffiting and it's coming along nicely. Theres a lot of stuff crammed into it so it's better if they don't proceed too quickly :-) There should be a few more videos from me for other things I do and i'll film walkthrus as I go.

I love watching his videos and when I was younger I always love trying to to find way the world worked and new ideas and had crazy theories that later on Saul on TV or red and a magazine to actually have happened after I predicted them

Looks like you got yourself some new bags, cool! Does the slab under the crane require extra thickness?

Yeah the old rags were just done. do not like the weight of the new ones though:-( As to the crane, it does not require any actually and is fine on compacted soil or gravel. I added it on this job becasuse two of the legs were out over the cut and even though it was compacted drain rock 3yds of concrete are cheap insurance. It's set up on the next job on compacted gravel as we speak :-)

Good eye :-) you might recognize it from old worldwar 2 newsreel footage at airports or aircraft carriers, It is indeed an old fire extinguisher cart:-)

Nice work. Why is there so much water build up on the roof? No drain up there?

Thanks, theres a temporary scupper but there was some stuff blocking it. The roof will be sloped to internal drains with polyiso, they just haven't been installed yet. and would be too high unless the foam was in so they wait.

Poo!, I actually liked those retaining wall beams as they are/were. Did I miss why they had to go?! How does the fire dept truck get to that side of the dwelling if there is a fire?

They were just cut off to finish the landscaping, it wasn't a bad look but bosses orders:-)

Super to see the progress :) Maybe I missed it but did the window team need / use the safety brackets you fabricated to rest the frames on before installation?

Totally Paul, they only worked at the main floor level since that was the origin point for the staging. They used some wooden brackets screwed to the wall for the few top floor windows that weren't over decks. They worked well and are still being used at the front of the house now that the crane is gone.

@@ShredPile Great to hear that. I'm sure the window crew missed the crane after it left for pastures new, it was a very handy asset to have for some much of the installation. Having installed a few large windows myself (without a crane) I know only too well how heavy / awkward the multi-glazed units can be.

@@paulhammond7489 They do:-) Even tho the biggest window holes are multiple units they are ridiculously heavy. Since they are 9' tall there is a piece of steel flatbar installed on one edge at the factory that just puts them over the top.

@@ShredPile 9' is way bigger than the biggest ones I handled, I think they were very close to 5' tall by 8' wide, installed by 2 of us on extension ladders. Swore I'd never do that again :-)

Just curious if you've ever had any apprentices that went off and are performing similar to you?

Short answer is no. I used to keep a medium sized crew that went to a smaller crew when I bought a boom truck in '05. When the subprime recession of '09 happened this area was affected more to the point of a depression. I kept everyone as busy as I could for as long as I could but that is about the point I stopped having employees and have been fully solo since then. A lot of my work variety is directly related to this time and it's need to be diverse to survive. I enjoy working alone so I continue too. I've often surmised that the greatest damage of that crash was the industry wide interuption of a young persons oppurtunity to be able to move thru the trade with an eye towards self-employment. For me starting in the late 80's it was a very common and natural next step but now it seems much harder to imagine. Looking a little wider at it you might almost think it was corporate planning to end up controlling most of the work now but even if it wasn't they certainly can't be accused of not taking full advantage of and expanding the situation to where we are today. Great question, sorry for the run-on answer:-)

@@ShredPile I mostly worked alone as well. Just grabbed day labor on delivery days and concrete days. My main scope was exterior IPE projects so the day labor thing worked out great for my needs. What you’re doing solo is really amazing. Don’t retire I’m enjoying this too much!! 😂

Are some of these contract work or like the shipping container building and bridge videos personal...or? They're all highly enjoyable and great workmanship regardless though.

So yeah, you got it exactly right. I'm a GC that works primarily as a subcontractor in one or more of several trades depending on the job at hand. As time permits there will be more personal videos and I have some good series planned there as well. Putting it all on youtube now somewhat changes the way I'm approaching them and i'm more inclined to create an intro and shoot the project start to finish rather than start and stop my way thru like the bridge and seacan vids. One things for sure, there will be more videos regardless. Stoked you are enjoying them!

I’m so glad you think and take other trades and materials into consideration to allow for the finished look overall. I did the same on my jobs but I was the one doing it from start to finish on total renovations for customers. Great job 👏🏻 and work. Ps.. I wish I had a little crane on some jobs 👍🏻. Love watching your builds from Vancouver Canada
