The problem (really it's a great thing) is that you will never get "the vibe" of David Bowie because he really doesn't have one. He was a chameleon as far as his music, constantly experimenting and trying different styles. There really is no such thing as a definitive Bowie sound. He was always evolving.

The thing to getting Bowie is to just look at the different styles and sounds he played with over the years. He was one of those musicians who just knew how to write a good song and didn't need to do it in any particular style. Even to the very end, his last album Blackstar, mixed avant-garde with jazz, triphop, art rock etc. Really talented guy.

Bowie reinvented himself multiple times during his career. This is 80’s Bowie, or what I refer to as mainstream or MTV Bowie. The thing I love most about this song is the beat--drummer laid down a beat that is just infectious!don’t know his name but he killed it.

Bowie was a generational type talent, he couldnt be put in any single genre because his discography is just so massive, and he really knew how to make good music, with thought provoking lyrics. He was one of a kind for sure.

I think the issue about "getting" Bowie is that Bowie's music is so massively different from song to song. Like, put on "I'm Afraid of Americans" after this one and the only commonality is that it's got "Bowie" in the attribution - the man himself doesn't even sound the same.

This was Bowie getting into the 80's and making music "for the masses" but on his own terms. And it worked in a HUGE way thanks in large part of the production of Nile Rodgers. Some saw it (and still do) as "selling out," but "selling out" means compromising your artistic integrity. Bowie didn't do that. It was just proof that he could make that kind of music if he wanted. After the 80's, he went back to making what pleased him artistically, but at that point had the financial comfort to go back to it because of his commercial success. And good on him for it.

The 80s was where Bowie had his most commercial success and while he made some interesting even great songs in the 80's I prefer the outpouring of genuine creative work in every other decade ! 80's Bowie is very good but 70s/90s/2000s were better !

For all people talk about him being a chameleon or re-inventing himself he has themes running through his work and I would argue that is what snares people. He was always an outsider in some sense. You can feel him watching on tracks like Young Americans; listen to his stories about the confused and lonely in tracks as diverse as Drive In Saturday or Sons of the Silent Age; witness his vulnerability in Quicksand, All the Madmen or Word on a Wing. Rock and Roll Suicide is like an anthem for the isolated - it holds out such hope that survival might be possible. In Heroes you hear about a clandestine love affair - even if it is doomed then at least let me feel something NOW. Oh, the anxiety that rises up with that turn when Station to Station shifts from Cabalistic ramblings to the discordant faux-joyful rumination on the past and musings on drug distorted reality! Different hair, musical styles, playing with the cut-up-technique or Polari are all things which might warrant the label "chameleon". And all that is true. Bowie was a gifted human who struggled with their mental health and made the world a little less scary for telling us about it.

@@sarahjane8146 Modern Love being a case in point. It pairs with Soul Love from Ziggy Stardust. Both are three verse expositions on Love. Soul Love is earnest as fits with Ziggy (First Love, Unconsummated abstracted Love, Maternal Sacrificial Love). Modern Love is a cycle through alienation from love as fits the cynical 1980's (Commitment-free Love -> attraction to Commitment love (get me to the church on time/marriage) -> questioning of love as a church sanctioned institution -> commitment-free Love, ... repeat and never find love in that loop.)

It took me a while to 'get' Bowie too. His personas were all over the map. I loved the 80s stuff which made me go back and check out more of the 70s music but, it was seeing his interviews on various talk shows that made me really appreciate him as a person and artist.

Bowie is a musical chameleon, hard to get a grasp on. I didn’t get into him into later in my musical journey, thankfully before he died, but I think he’s an artist you can find a few songs you like and then revisit later.

I love David Bowie's music so much, but I understand what Lex is saying. The song "Heroes" came on the radio a couple of years ago, and, of course, I was enjoying it because I think it's brilliant and it's one of my favorite songs. When it ended, my sister turned to me and asked, "What was going on with that song!?" That's when I realized she didn't like the song and that not everybody likes David Bowie's music.

The song is about a struggle to find solace in love and religion. Least Bowie said so. Interesting thing is the chorus refrains describe - when someone's shacked up in a relations they can just come and go, easier to leave - "Modern Love" hence "walks on by me." Church on time" and "no confession" answers vary 'terrifies me' and "God and man" answers "don't believe in modern love" - Refers to it's more difficult to leave a relationship - more vested and likely committed - thus people try harder to stay together under such circumstances.

The thing about Bowie is that he doesn't have one single vibe. This song is from his "Thin White Duke" period. Lex got it right. He's was an artist. He was constantly changing and putting on different personas and his music changed along with him. If you haven't yet, you should react to Ashes to Ashes. My favorite Bowie song.

It's OK Lex to not 'Get' Bowie since he was constantly evolving and experimenting. I've liked him since I first heard him in 1972 with 'Starman'. But I like some things more than others. In a way he's like a Jazz artist in that he never stood still.

I first got into Bowie with Ziggie Stardust that dropped when I was in high school. That album was so awesome, I worked backwards to Hunky Dory, and The Man Whole Sold the World. So my love of Bowie came from that earlier style. But as others have said, Bowie didn't stick to any formulas, and was constantly experimenting with sounds and styles. It's often difficult to know what a Bowie song "means." I don't think Bowie felt the need to always instill "meaning" into his music. Bowie's lyrics are often ambiguous or enigmatic. He would be inspired by something and a song would form. His song, "Heroes" is a good example. While recording in Berlin, he looked out of a window to see a man a woman kissing while sitting on a bench under the shadow of the Berlin Wall. That simple act, in that place, in that time, struck Bowie as an inspirational example of the human spirit...and heroic. He wrote the song in about an hour, and it was recorded that afternoon. Just another song for Bowie, and he didn't have any special hopes for it, but it became one of the biggest hits of his long career. His songs, inexplicable as they sometime are, had a way of reaching souls. Throughout all of his personifications, he and his music was always real, always sincere.

You need to listen to ALL of “The Man Who Sold The World “ (1970) and “Hunky Dory” (1971) … and for sure all of “Station To Station” and “Young Americans” and “Diamond Dogs” and gosh don’t forget “Aladdin Sane” … did I mention you need to hear “Ziggy Stardust” from beginning to end ? Oh yeah Space Oddity … really need to hear them all the way through . ‘Lodger” is a masterpiece … as is “Scary Monsters” . How many copies of these must I have worn out on LP, 8-Trak, Casssette, CD, … and finally LP again . How many hundred or maybe thousand times each must I have heard these ? I saw him LIVE twice. Once front row center in 1990 for the “Sound & Vision” tour. Unbelievable . Bucket list stuff. 🎸❤️😎✌️✌️✌️

This is definitely the poppiest Bowie album--Lets Dance released in 1983. He employed Nile Rogers of Chic fame to produce, and Rogers did not disappoint. Most of the guitar and bass hooks were played by Rogers himself. Check out China Girl, where Rogers brought in none other than Stevie Ray Vaughn to play guitar.

Serious Moonlight was a fantastic tour. After loving the outdoor show in my own city so much, I managed to nab front row for an indoor show in another city and loved that even more. He and Peter Gabriel always have very slick, well-designed stage shows and costuming, and their songwriting is excellent. It makes sense that even Lex is having trouble pinning him down. We all did. you may have to look past finding direct meaning in some of his songs because there were periods when he would write down a bunch of things from the top of his head then take scissors to his sheet of paper in order to destroy. afterwards he would rebuild a song by rearranging the scraps using tape.

In the "church on time" part he was quoting from a song called "I'm Getting Married in the Morning" from the musical My Fair Lady. The song is sung by a freewheeling character who is about to be married and is going out for one last wild night on the town. Each verse ends with him reminding his friends that no matter how wasted he is they must "Get me to the church on time." From there Bowie segues from musing about love to musing about religion.

It's Theatre Pop So was KISS and Alice Cooper Meat Loaf But Bowie Is a Legend He was something and someone different every time you saw him while I went from a 12 year old until my late 50s. My favorite song of his was Cat People {Putting Out Fire With Gasoline}
