I've been challenging myself to try and create finished products before seeing the tutorial, and I'm surprised we used significantly different approaches. I used a collection including three shapes and only one instance on points node. I hooked the collection info node into domain size, then multiplied that by a noise factor (with a float curve in between), then used that as the instance index. Produced essentially the same effect (and would have been identical if I used a random value instead of noise factor). I think I prefer that approach, especially since it's more extensible. (All you have to do to add an extra shape is create it and drop it into the collection.) That said, I actually didn't realize the separate geometry node could be used in this way, so I learned something anyways! So, useful tutorial for me after all! Cheers, and have a great day! :)

Agreed, instancing a collection is a great option. That's what I used in one of the sample projects back in Blender 2.93 for VF Point Array (free plugin on GitHub). I suppose the switch node would also work; connected between multiple input objects and the instance on points node. But it'd be a lot messier, with no easy way to do multiple indices, just boolean selection (which means you have to stack a switch node for every additional object).

I love this. If I may give some feedback though... The geometry nodes section got a little confusing just from how much it has going on. By the end of it, you a have bowl of spaghetti from all the wires, which are difficult to parse if you're a beginner, not to mention remembering what all of them do. If I'm not mistaken, there's a feature in Geo Nodes that lets you label nodes in whatever way you want. Maybe in a future tutorial you can mention, "Hey, if you lose track of what node does what, tap this key to create a label for it." I forget what the shortcut is, but you get the point. Other than that, this tutorial was a great amount of fun to follow along to, as always. Thank you for the hard work!

Another nice one Ducky. I too would like to see more geonodes tuts specifically for this type of animation or better yet for motion graphic types of projects. It's an area of Blender ripe for exploration I think. Are you slowly becoming the new Blender Guru? 😉

This is amazing. I am loving your channel more and more. Can you please make more such tutorials. I want to know how blender's geometry node can replace cinema 4ds mograph tools so I don't have to use it. I really love using blender but the only thing it lacks is mograph tools and that is a real deal breaker for me. I know geometry nodes does have a lot potential for mographs but I don't know how to use them to get similar results as c4d.

I would say this is not exclusively true. All of my geometry notes tutorials has almost no math in it yet I’m able to create beautiful motion graphics. It’s all about how you use it

@@vjfxtheory Hmm, what do you mean when you say you can't use F-curves in geo nodes? I just tried it by inserting keyframes on values in nodes, and then opening it up in a graph editor and it worked fine. I can do anything I want with the animation as usual. As for constraints, those can either be added mathematically through clamp nodes, for example, or one can use the positional data of an empty or armature in the geo nodes set-up and apply constraints to said empty or armature as normal.
@MrAwesomeTheAwesome
@MrAwesomeTheAwesome Жыл бұрын
@@vjfxtheory You can use drivers. If the F-curves of another object affect that other object's parameters, then use a driver from that object's parameter onto the node. There are also several ways to handle delays procedurally in Blender. Most are workarounds or addons, but it is possible. I'm confused as to why you seem to think you know how much I know about motion graphics and procedural animation based off of my asking for clarification over some vague thing you said. You said: 'you can't use FCurves in geonodes without using Python'. I have used F-curves and applied them to Geo Nodes often. Both directly as part of keyframing parameters within Geo Nodes and modifying the animation in the F-curve editor, and indirectly through using drivers attached to objects animated independently (with custom F-curves). Whatever, just feels strangely dismissive out of hand. Hopefully you can figure out whatever problem it is you seem to be having with Blender. 'Cuz, yeah, I clearly don't know what you're talking about. Have a good day, I guess.

That's very cool. Question... if you were to make the grid not only shift position, but scale up or down, and or rotate? How would you go about it? I have added some variations of this setup to rotate and scale instances and it works to some degree, but it is not very intuitive with the map range. It also seems to only fully scale down to 0 when near the empty's origin, but not the whole thing (I'm using a sphere). Any insight would be very appreciated!

I'm having this weird issue where I'm using the same process to effect the scale on a field of cubes that I instanced in a Mesh to Volume => Distribute Points in Volume => Instance on Points node chain. For some reason, it's generating all the cubes at once, instead of by Proximity. Does anyone know why this might be?
