eBaTT Presents the modern penhold Grip with Malaysian International Table tennis player Aixin Tee.
Grip- Today we looked at the grip of a modern penhold player, where the fingers are located and the forehand rubber is slightly off the tip of the blade. This is for finger comfortability and easy access to grip location.
Backhand - In today's table tennis game, it is almost impossible to compete at the highest level if you do not have a good backhand. Therefore we have seen a unique development in the penhold grip where they use a swivel backhand technique. This new method enables a penhold player to play a backhand as good if not better than a shake-hand gripped player. The only downfall is the angle and surface area is smaller. Making this stroke much harder to master as opposed to a normal shake hand backhand.
Placement - A top player regardless of grip, always looks at having the ability to place the ball in a very precise manner. Placement is critical for penhold players as they do not want to play too many rallies, again this is due to the high-risk Swivel backhand.
Footwork - We showed Aixin's masterfull movement and how efficient movement must be to enable true speed. All elements are essential for you to master the penhold grip or to understand their game and play against one.
Thank you to Aixin Tee, you can follow her on Instagram @aixintee

By taking 3 great Chinese penholders (Xu Xin, Wang Hao, Ma Lin), it can be seen that their grips are different. (especially fingers on backhand side have different position or make different forms). But this video is still good. Thanks for making this video :) I am penholder too :)

current no.1 world rank is a penholder player, so it is not inferior to the shakehand, more materials on penholder grip & technique are needed for the beauty of tt playing

Thank you. Very useful video. I’m also a penhold player (amateur, though). Could you make a video on modern penhold backhand block? I struggle with this shot, difficult for me to be precise and consistent. Partly due to the middle, ring, and small finger occupying some of the real estate of the rubber, but also something seems to have to do with the position and angle of the racket...

Ya, shakehanders almost bore me now, and that popular grip was uncomfortable for me when I first started playing, and so I played with that awful 'Dan Seemiller' grip that NOBODY uses. Go Figure, and that grip is the worst for backhands of ANY grip. I discovered late in life the RVP/RPB penhold grip, but I alter my finger placement on the backhand side with tucking in my fingers into a half C, fingertips/nails pressed against the blade which gives more blade area for the ball instead of fingers spread across the blade which can lead to mis hit balls. I now got the backhand of my dreams, for my level...Robert at 66.

Actually, her grip is the Chinese prototypical modern penhold grip (on both sides).
@BiscoWho

It forces your forehand technique to be all about the spin, which is why you should take the ball later on the forehand, as Xu Xin does. You should also use a DHS Skyline 2 of some sort, if you're taller than 5'9, and you should use a Skyline 3 of some sort, if you're 5'9 or shorter. The Skyline is the ONLY rubber that was specifically designed for the penhold forehand and it's specifically designed for you to be using that prototypical grip too. The thing about the heights is just something I've figured out from experience at the highest level and from observation of the best RPB penholders who use inverted rubbers on both sides. I'm 6'2 aka 188cm. I've used every Skyline there is and I've put them all through their paces. The Skyline 2 NEO with the hard sponge and the Skyline 2 blue sponge 40 degrees are both beautiful for me. I use a Viscaria-type blade. I have one of the most devastating forehands in the world too. When I'm in the midrange and I hammer counterattacks to the diagonal corner those two Skyline 2s make my ball stay low over the net, but it still hits the white paint in the corner, and it has INSANE spin and speed on it. When I try that same thing with any of the Skyline 3s, the ball generally throws higher and it doesn't stay on the rubber as long due to the Skyline 3s being more sensitive to incoming spin. So, the 3 is better for shorter players due to the throw being higher and due to its ability to generate more pace on the ball with a shorter stroke. When you're shorter and a penholder, you can't play as far away from the table as you can when you're taller. So, the Skyline 3's attributes are aligned with the shorter player and the Skyline 2's attributes are aligned with the taller player.

According to RPB creator Wang Hao, it is not the wrist but the elbow that flicks. Wrist maybe 10% but 90% it is the elbow. Wrist automatically flicks with the elbow movement.
@ebatt8803
@ebatt8803 7 ай бұрын
Thank you for the in-site, a few things for you to note. Wang Hao was not the creator of RPB, it was in fact Lui Guiliang which then was upscaled by Ma Lin and Wang Hao mastered it. The Elbow plays a huge part and that may not have been explained well in the video, nevertheless the wrist has the key ingredient that allows players to gain extra spin and control over the ball. All the very best…
