Alex, this is a wonderful and very clear analysis of the modern versus Traditional Swing. Helps me tremendously. Way to go. I started playing when I was about 11 years old, which is when I first started caddying. I quit golf for about 40 years and now I'm an avid golfer once more. I would describe my swing as traditional.

"WIN" Totally agree, At 78 I have problems with the modern swing. I have been trying to get more arms and wrist into my swing. Hopefully getting back some lost distance. I know it will be less accurate but I can live with it. Shot my age 2 weeks ago wohoo.

I have been working on the body swing (new) after 60+ years of arm swing(old) with discouraging results. Your demonstration of the hip turn is the clearest I have seen. Thanx. I will try that tomorrow to see if it will keep my ball from fading . I always fade the ball if I don’t get them 45° to the left by the time the club makes contact. Straight as Robinhood’s arrow when I do make the 90° turn from right to left.

Started when I was 8. We lived on a lake and my Dad would take us to the course by boat. One spring I got a 5 lb. carp with my 9 iron. I'm now 70 and still doing the drills my Dad taught me. I have to say Alex, the more I watch you the better my game has gotten. Your a fabulous instructor.

Hi Alex, I think your expiation between traditional and modern is the best I have heard. In fact you are the only one I have ever heard that has shown the difference. As I have gotten older I am like most trying to get more distance. To your point I think I got caught between both swings. At 75 I think it’s best to stay with traditional. Unfortunately I have had some injuries and require surgery but I am determined to play good golf again. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for the great and simple lessons. Best, MG

Started learning golf in 1988 (at 33yo). Started playing in 1989. Old school swing with reverse C caused a lot of back issues. I first eliminated the reverse C around 1995. I was a slicer & couldn’t draw the ball at all. Never had lessons but I started closing the face a little to reduce slice & developed a controlled hard fade which also came with a bad pull hook at times (3 of 10 swings). It wasn’t until around 2005 that I started using the modern swing that I almost eliminated the pull hook & now an unintentional draw, which wasn’t bad. I now have a nice controlled fade driver, long & mid irons. I also can fade my short irons but I have to set up correctly to it or I draw them, which is not a bad thing, especially to get around trees on dog leg left fairway approaches. Awesome Alex. You made me think about the evolution of my swing which I have never really broken down as I just did. Thanks again for the awesome content & drills.

Started golf as a late bloomer in my early 30 but after my recovery from my 4th surgery I’m going to take the opportunity to retool my swing to modern. Like Jordan Speith. Sort of the smaller of the moderns that seem to be built like line backer in a football “American” team lately. Hoping to generate power by taking the pressure if my arm shoulders and more core turn. Tony Finau like.

Very interesting…never even thought about this….I’m 54, grew up with the more handsy method, but try to keep up with the modern stuff, I’ve transitioned to the more body dominant modern swing…however, I’ve had both hips replaced and find it much harder to keep up that speed…I actually experimented with the older school more handsy approach and it suits my current body much better…hence, how I came across this video…was looking to confirm my experimentation…appreciate the video…

I started golf, by being a fill in, when my boss could not make the commitment to the foursome for a work tournament. I was in my early forties. I had a ball and got hooked. The golfers that stood out to me was Ernie Els, and Freddy Couples. They make ithe swing look smooth and easy. Really enjoy your tips. I am now in my sixties.

I started playing golf in the late 1970’s. I was taught the old method and could hit the ball a decent distance but my wood shots never really worked. Fast forward 40 odd years and I am now playing the modern way. Iron shots fly higher because I am not closing the face and wood shots tend to be straighter. I am not hitting the ball as far but I am 71. Iron shots are now very accurate with lots of spin. I have stopped duck hooking shots which is good news but I have noticed that timing is more critical if I want consistent distance. Only doing a 3/4 swing these days but with a stronger grip nowadays. Previously I had to play a very week grip and I was finding that my wrists were hurting after a round. Thanks for the vlog.

At 62 years of age and having started back last year after being off for over 40 years I am seeing both schools. As much as I would like the more modern approach my back won’t let me do this on a consistent basis. My goal is to get a consistent swing to get better ball striking so it doesn’t matter to me which one as long as I can be more consistent. Still working on it. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for this video this explains allot. I think this is why I struggle now after picking back up the game after many years of not playing consistently. I used to play in the low 80's and now struggle to break 90. I have been watching/practicing to so many modern release videos after not playing for many years. I think I still have pieces of my traditional swing that is not working well with the new instructional videos I have been watching. Not even sure my body is set up for the modern release after a previous back surgery. I am going to have to go in for some lessons and get this figured out.

I have been playing golf for over 15 years moving from old tradition to new tradition. Using new traditional method caused me lots of distance. I starting to use my whole body and no arms release. Now I tried to combine the new method on the take back and coming down and use softer left hand and arms going around the body. This will create a torque on the way down with the body and more hands and arms speed.

I turned 65 recently and with my new driver and modern golf swing I hit it 260 yards. I don't use the closed DJ face with the rolled wrist at the top... too painful on my tendons.. I hit some of the straightest shots with the modern release but they are never the longest. And it is very difficult to hit a long drive with a body rotation release.
@emann7153 ай бұрын
Likely not creating enough rotational speed or lag in the swing. I’m really transitioning now, and my club head speed is up with the rotation, it’s weird because arms feel like they’re just along for the ride and I can’t “feel fast” but the speeds are much higher, had a 5i chs up to about 105 the other day
@markio20103 ай бұрын
@emann715 As you get older body rotation is hard on the body. Take advantage while you can!...in my early 50s now and more arms in the swing with some rotation is so much easier in the body.
@emann7153 ай бұрын
For sure! The rotational swing can be for anyone, but it’s generally harder as age increases. I had a massive arm only swing and some days I could shoot 81, and others 95 with no real difference in feeling. Could hit the ball a mile, but really couldn’t score well with the arms only feelings

I also noticed that your weight seems to be on the back foot on the downswing until you have hit the shot and the momentum turns you through in to your lead foot. Am I correct in my assumption of this Alex?

Loving this comparison the most Alex! Seems I've got lost with intermixing the two styles. This might be a gamechanger to me!
@kdub32882 жыл бұрын
Yes I really wasn’t aware that there were two totally different types of swings so I got lost trying to mix elements of each from different instructors and it really screwed me up. After learning about different swings and that I’m more old school, I’m sticking with old school because I’m way more comfortable and accurate with it. I’ve tried the modern swing and found I may get a little more distance (probably from lower ball flight) but it just feels too unnatural for me and feel like I don’t have nearly as good distance control. I’ve played baseball growing up too so I don’t think that helps with the new swing either.

@zazenforever49403 жыл бұрын
Thank you! So, with the modern release the flat left wrist continues all the way to the finish? Does the left arm bend/right arm straighten? This would seem to cause the club to release up and down the line vs around the body as per the traiditional release.

I started hitting balls at a range as a stress management tool in college about 5 years ago but I didn't really start playing the actual game until really this year. I recently had the chance to get fitted for some irons and during that process I realized that my yard sale irons where holding me back quite a bit both in terms of distance and control. I will soon have an order in for my new pings and it would be a good time to adjust my swing. This video is the 1st time I've heard about a difference in releases, I swing my 7 iron in the low 80's (mph) which I've been told is fast would you then recommend going to the modern releases due to the above average power already in my swing.
