The minolta lenses had some of the most advanced coatings at the time. They didn't have an anti-flare coating however, as minolta found it reduced lens sharpness.

@graphiknation2 жыл бұрын
Hey Sam, thanks so much for watching! I don't have either of those lenses personally and I have never used a Minolta AF lens. The big question here for me is do you care about the autofocus at all or are you looking to use these lenses on the S5 in manual focus only? I did come across an adapter for Minolta AF to Leica L mount here: amzn.to/3x7d39f but it is a passive adapter so you would not get any electronic communications to the autofocus system in the lens. If that is fine with you, I would say why not give that a try before spending more money on a different lens with similar specs? It seems like a great low cost option to get you shooting right away if cost is a concern. You can always add to your collection later without having to make a rushed decision on what to invest in. Not sure if this is the answer your are seeking, but I hope it helps. Happy shooting!

Good thing to share this experience. I’ll share mine as well if you allow me. I have S1R body with M lenses (coded) and Leica M-L adapter. One important thing first is to mention that the M Lenses is not part of the L alliance. That means that Leica doesn’t give information to Panasonic about M lenses correction what so ever. That means also that even if you’re using the Leica M-L adapter which reads the codes of your M lenses it doesn’t share the information with the body. So you have nothing in the exif datas. But, at least you have the information of the focal length. I mention this because I also have a Novoflex adapter and in the case of using it, even when specifying the focal length at the start of the S1R, you don’t even have the focal length in exif. To summurise this first point, using M lenses (coded) : With Leica M-L adapter you only have focal length in EXIF but not the name nor the model of the used lens. With Novoflex adapter : NO information in the EXIF Using Non coded Leica M lenses : whatever the adapter, no information of focal length in EXIF So to my point of view there is a bug that could be fixed by Panasonic : using manual lenses shows a message at the beginning when you switch ON the body asking you the focal length you’re using in order to adapt the IBIS. Why don’t they report this information in EXIF datas?
@graphiknation4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes, thanks for your comment and that is correct, these are passive adapters and no EXIF data is captured. I actually had that in my script when I made this video, but I guess it got edited out somehow(?) Anyhoo, I totally agree with you on the focal length detail, I was pretty surprised when I first used that feature in a LUMIX camera, only to realize it did not make it into the EXIF data in Lightroom. I am not quite sure why they can't (or haven’t) made that connection, but it would stand to reason that if it's possible to add that in the interface, you could also add a name label to identify the lens as well. That would be a pretty sweet feature in the body that would help a lot when shooting with adapted lenses and dumb adapters. Maybe we’ll get there one day soon. Another thing I often try and remind myself is how far technology has advanced in the last 2 decades. In this case, something like EXIF data is a very new capability that photographers have never had in the past, so I try not to get too stressed over it personally. I try and embrace the simplicity, and appreciate having this bridge between analog and digital that gives me a little of the best of both worlds. It’s not perfect, but I kind of like that. Brings me back to a simpler time. :) Thanks again for watching and for your comment, it's a very good point you make! :)
@DidierMOULINPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Hey Laureen, The Leica adopter is not a passive one. It’s a question of what is in the L mount alliance... in terms of contracts. But as long as the M adapter can read the 6 bit code, tha alliance could at least allow Panasonic to take this info into the EXIF, only the name of the lens. I understand they don’t want to kill their SL2 sales !!! By the way SL2 is really optimised for the M lenses and I have to say that I find some strange behaviour of my M24mm lens on the border of the frame. Agree with you on the fact that EXIF. Is solething that didn’t exist in the analog word. But well, it exists now and the frustration comes from 2 points ; 1) the active adapter has all the information 2) the S body asks you the focal distance when you start it... Hope this improves later. Have a great day and take care of you. You video gave me the will to do some also, from here in France, to illustrate some gear...

Hi Laureen. In addition to my first comment, I would like to know your feeling in terms of handling between S1 + M lenses VS M body + M lenses. Mine is that when I come back using my old M8 I still feel more joy and pleasure and a real act of photography compared to the S1. The conclusion of my experience is that I’ll keep the S1R with the 50mm 1.4 S Pro and will keep on going with my M8 until I can afford a used M Monochrom type 246.
@graphiknation4 жыл бұрын
Hey yeah, I hear you and it's a totally valid point to make as well. I also have an M8, and while I love the image quality and the color profile, the rangefinder is frustrating to me and I often have to retake the same image multiple times before I get the cropping I want. I much prefer the modern interface design of my LUMIX cameras paired with older lenses, that really works for me. The M8 has a lot of charm and nostalgia and I do take it out once in a while, but honestly it mostly sits on shelf collecting dust. I was thinking I may even sell it some time soon and buy something else I would get more use out of. I'm waiting on the new smaller body release of the S series to decide if that will be an S model or G model investment. Fingers crossed the new S body will be smaller, lighter and have an articulating screen. :)

graphiknation Hi and thanks for your answer. Yes it’s more accurate using nowadays technology compared to the range finder even with an M10 I agree. My point is about the global feeling of the fotographic act and « art » in the end. Either I use modern technology with AF and all the best of today’s tools... or I’m in the mood of manual focus and in this case M combo is a joy to use. But as soon as Covid crise is finished I plan to make a trip to a big town as London for instance and play with my S + M lenses to see in action because for sure the M8 is a real old camera.

@graphiknation3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching! The L/M to M4/3 adapter is for Leica M-mount to M4/3 (which are the type of Leica lenses I use in this video). The L-Mount would be listed as L/L (for Leica L) and as far as I know, an adapter for L/L to M4/3 does not exist. The technical aspects for why certain lenses can't be adapted to some bodies is a bit over my head, but I imagine there is a good reason they are not compatible. It may be due to flange distance(?) which is often the reason some lenses/cameras cannot be combined, but I am just not certain. I’m sure there is a blog thread or discussion board somewhere on the interwebs that goes deep into the subject, so maybe try giving it a good college try on Google? Lol I wish I had a better answer for you, but hopefully this is somewhat useful information. Thanks again for tuning in!

@graphiknation4 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, Pentax K mount lenses are superb quality, and you can get adapters for the S1. I couldn't find the Novoflex brand on amazon, but here is a link to the less expensive Haoge adapter, which should work just as well: amzn.to/2L2B6Oc The biggest thing to note is that thes are "passive" adapters, so you will not get any meta data from the lens to the camera, and auto focus will not work. I would have to do some research to see if there are any active adapters available for the Pentax K mount to L mount, but the Novoflex that I found online is only a passive adapter, and I'm not sure if the higher price offers much benefit in that brand? Definitely curious to look into it. Thanks for watching and for your question. I would try a less expensive Haoge or some other brand first, but as long as you're comfortable with manual focus, you should get superb image quality from your Pentax K primes on the S1 body. Best of luck, and please let me know how it turns out. :)

@@graphiknation thanks for the quick reply I have two options selling the lenses or keeping them as a backup to use with my K-70. I guess going with a lower cost adapter (The Novoflex is highly regarded but goes for $234 on B&H) makes the most sense. I really don't have a problem with manual focus and I'm more concerned that the aps-c's ability to use only half the available megapixels will ultimately point me in the direction of acquiring more of Sigma's DG DN line of FF lenses...

@@markreif1 I hear your concern, but I don’t think it will make a noticeable difference in image resolution /pixel quality. @graphiknation4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching, and you raise a good question. I found the image quality, sharpness and color was overall very impressive. I could only really tell the difference between images taken with the native lenses vs. the vintage lenses by actually looking at the lens metadata in Lightroom. I didn't stack filters deeper than 1 (or maybe 2), and that held up fine for me in the corners. All the lenses I used had very subtle vignetting, if any at all. I think you should be fine in most cases(?) but I imagine there will be some lenses that will have more issues than others. You could always rent the S1 for a week, and give it a test drive with your lenses to see how well the pairing is. I expect you will love the S1, it's a beast of a camera! Lensrentals.com has pretty great pricing for rentals, and an option to buy if you like the gear. :)

@@graphiknation Thanks for the quick reply! I have no doubt that the s pro lenses beat the vintage lenses, I was more making sure that there were no obvious issues. It actually slipped my mind that Kolarivision offers a thin filter stack mod for the s1, for frequent users of film-era wide angles. And vignetting is less of an issue on full-frame, where there is more dynamic range to correct for it. As for the body itself, I've had the chance to handle it, and I think the design is excellent for what it is. Was disappointed when Nikon and Canon made few changes to the melty-plastic DSLR shape, and this is the rethink that the transition to mirrorless really demanded. However, since getting used the Panasonic's own GX85, I realize that the corner-mounted viewfinder is less of a disruption the the left eye, and a top-mounted shutter button is much better for pressing with the thumb. I'll wait for a rangefinder style body to pair with the rumored f1.8 lenses, hopefully in the size range of fuji's x-pro series. Thanks for the video! In an ideal world, every lens would work on every camera, but full-frame mirrorless + adapters get us close enough. The FE->Z mount techart adapter is 2mm thick and somehow works!

@@beomon3449 hey, sure thing, thanks again for watching! I think you can't go wrong with the S1 or the S5, just all comes down to which one suits your specific needs better. The biggest distinguishing factors for me are the smaller size and weight of the S5, as well as the articulating screen, which I absolutely love. That one feature is kind of my deal breaker for the S1, but otherwise that camera is nearly perfect. Enjoy your new camera!

How would you rate vintage lenses to modern lenses?
@graphiknation Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching! I enjoy both for different reasons. Modern lenses are certainly sharper and cleaner and offer features like stabilization and autofocus. I use modern lenses when these things are top priority. Vintage lenses on the other hand can give you lots of charm, character and texture and can produce very unique and imperfect effects that are largely considered flaws by modern standards. Shooting with vintage or manual focus lenses forces you to slow down and be more thoughtful and precise with your framing and focusing and I find that process more fun, engaging and creatively rewarding. I also like the smaller, more compact and lightweight size of my vintage lenses, so that makes a difference in how much I can (or am willing to) carry around. If I need to nail focus and take a “perfect” picture, I’ll use a newer lens. But if I’m just having fun and enjoying the process, that’s when I tend to prefer my vintage and specialty lenses. It is often said that a technically perfect photo doesn’t necessarily make the most beautiful or artistic photo and I agree with that sentiment.

Thanks! How do you find the wide-angle lenses on the S1 sensor? And on the S1R... perhaps Panasonic will lend you that, too ;) Looking forward to more. Subbed :)

Hey, thanks so much for watching. I really loved using my Vintage Voigtlander 15mm wide angle lens on the S1, it was my favorite by far. It took spectacular images, with incredible sharpness and no real noticeable vignetting (which I was kind of expecting) so that was a nice surprise. You can see some of those wide angle examples around 2 minutes into the video. I wish I still had the S1, and could get more time with it, but sadly I had to send it back to Panasonic. :( If you have the S1 (or the S1R), I think you will be very pleased with how well it performs with older lenses. I didn't have to buy any lenses myself, I just used the lens I already owned with some inexpensive, passive adapters. I highly recommend the Voigtlander 15mm for a light-weight wide angle option on the S1, it is such an incredible lens! Here are those links: Voigtlander 15mm @t M to L mount adapter: @t It's not cheap, but you might be able to find an older one like the one I have for a better price on eBay? Thanks again for watching and subscribing!

Can micro four thirds lenses be adapted to work with the s1?
@graphiknation4 жыл бұрын
Sadly, no they cannot due to the smaller sensor size which would not cover the FF sensor. 😢

You don‘t have the S1 anymore? What happened?
@graphiknation4 жыл бұрын
Sadly, I only had it for a short term collaboration with LUMIX, and at the end of that project, I had to send it back to the manufacturer. I was very sad to have to send it back, it was an absolute joy to use!

Oh ok, vintage film lenses. Not m43 lenses since m43 is not compatible
@graphiknation4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes unfortunately we cannot use out M4/3 lenses on the S1, but you can use vintage lenses on both systems with the right adapters. It's not for everyone, but if you enjoy manual focus (and hate lugging around heavy gear like me), you might enjoy it. I found using vintage lenses was a good bridge between the 2 systems for my street photography, and I got good results from the experience. :)

@@graphiknation Thank you! Yes I have a Pentax 50mm that I use with GX7 with adapter. It's so SHARP! If I go s1 I would want the same focal lengths that I use on m43, like the 7-14 m43, 25mm m43, 35-100 m43. Hoping I can find them in full frame but so many brands, prices and choices.
@graphiknation4 жыл бұрын
@@GUTOMOFFICIAL If your Pentax is a K-Mount lens (not 110) it should fit with an adapter, and give you the same image/framing as your 25mm on your M4/3 (once you do the math on crop factor). The other focal lengths you mention are available for the S1 from LUMIX/Leica. The 16-35mm S Pro is roughly similar to your 7-14mm, and the 70-200mm S Pro lens would match the 35-100mm. Also, the kit lens that comes with the S1 is a very impressive lens, so I would get that when you buy the camera. I normally would get body only, and just buy pro and prime lenses, but I love the kit lens on the S1!
