He said ghoonghat was a result of patriarchy and that he would prefer torn jeans over ghoonghat well I would have chosen neither why? Because ghoonghat wasn't a result of patriarchy it was a measure to keep women safe from Mughals who kidnapped and humiliated women in whichever town/village they invaded (if they found her pretty) so ghoonghat hid the beauty of women to keep them safe, also the concept of marriages in North India in night was the result of the same atrocities done by Mughals, Afghans etc. as per the torn jeans i wouldn't go with that either because there are many decent clothing to go with except that torn jeans... I mean they won't allow a candidate in torn jeans in the upsc cse interview right? You need to wear either a suit or a saree... Now tell me that is patriarchy too..😂 I have seen that the upsc syllabus is made in such a way that sometimes it makes us feel inferior to invaders what crap west do we are trained to accept as modernisation, I mean look what west is going through, if this mindset continues then India would suffer the same fate

For some, covering up is a sign of modesty whereas torn jeans could mean freedom. In my opinion, we should be respectful to both instead of choosing one over the other. The patriarchal aspect of covering up isn't applicable to every person. Some women choose to wear modest clothing. So, they shouldn't be criticised for this by the liberal people and be called 'victims of the patriarchal society'.

​​@@ishika_sharma.17you can see the paintings of thanjuvar , madhubani and all the royal palaces of Rajasthan in all those paintings womens cover their head, if you look at our goddess except raudra roop of maa like mahakali, kaalbharavi generally all the idols of mata has ghunghat on there head, you can see the paintings of mata sita and explanation of there character according to valmiki Ramayan she always takes ghunghat in front of others, that's why we offer chunari ,sindur and bengals in the temple ,just like Sikhism , Jainism in our temples as well ideally women should cover their head as a sign of respect not because of any kind of insecurity, because it is a part of our culture.

Extreme of both should be avoided . Compulsory ghoongat leads to purdah system and unwarrented restrictions . On the other hand blindly copying the western culture runs the risk of erasing our own unique and diverse cultures. Ultimately clothing should be an individual's choice as per climatic conditions or occassion.

I'd say.. Ghoonghat doesn't show patriarchy. In fact, it is the result of Mughals and other invaders coming to India and their behaviour towards women. So, this is something which doesn't make any sense in current situation. Now, talking about torn jeans, there's nothing wrong in adhering such clothings occassionally or as per the situation and surroundings but some people mistake westernization with modernization and they want to adapt it completely which is wrong. Being modern is being scientist or reasonable as per the modern circumstances, not blindly calling western as modern
