Great video thanks boys. My boy is 8 and he’s been working on the scoop, also when not to etc. this will really help him(he watches a lot of your vids!)

These micro adjustments are crucial and go largely unnoticed, unless you've played in goal you'll never know! I can hear the pundits now "oh the goalies made a mess of that one" you can put an outfield player in goal and they can pull off a worldy, but these skidding, awkward, bobbling and drifting away "easy" shots are where the real goalie earns his keep. Split second decision making can only improve with real world training sessions, just like this....and its on grass, not chuffin Astrosmurf! Brilliant lads...thankyou.

@@ModernDayGK I don't mind if I dont get a reply pal, I do ramble on a bit tbh😆. I've just never come across your lads aproach to goalieing before and nobody (goalies aside) is interested in the finer art of it all. To me, football is the boring bit that gets in the way of goalkeeping.

7:32 Lee almost takes the sting out of it by letting that volley come into him more. I imagine goalkeeping coaches might lose their mind with that but makes a lot of sense. Reminds me of when cricketers do a similar thing when they catch...is this something Lee does instinctively or was coached towards at some point?
@ModernDayGK
@ModernDayGK 2 жыл бұрын
This is completely instinctive to Lee! These little things that seem unorthodox make him one of the best catchers of a ball you’ll see

Really enjoyed this and the other recent vids. It's good to see a couple of things come up that I've seen with my lad a few times recently and to know the pros get the same challenges. In particular, there seems to be a distance from the GK right between scoop and collapsing dive where you can get caught between the two. Also, reading the ball moving away from the GK, where he has almost been caught using a scoop when a collapse would have been safer. Looking forward to the next vids.

Question (3:08) why do you box the ball when it looks catchable?
@ModernDayGK
@ModernDayGK 2 жыл бұрын
Because Lee is running forwards towards the ball he finds that a very risky catch to make especially with pressure. A punch allows you to attack the ball with as much a speed as you possibly can. It is very very effective

2:50 don’t you think that in this situation by having closed position and being few cm to the left you could even just try to save this pass with your foot? What do you think about your position?

Sometimes when the striker is next to the goal and the ball is going straight forward to Lee he doesn't move and just made the good catch (like kasper Schmeichel did last night) but in games it's really hard to not have the reflex to just beat off the strike. How do you think we have to work to get these relfexes of staying straight when the balle is coming to you ?

Quick question - I’m some of the “finding the angle” saves I noticed that the keepers would hold their line instead of closing the angle. Am I just being too impatient in goal, or is there another reason for this?
@ModernDayGK
@ModernDayGK 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tyler. It all depends on the situation mate. Because of the approach it’s curling shot and being too high = too much space around us for the ball to curl out of our reach and back into the goal. Also in a game, there’s a high chance that there’ll be pressure going towards the ball and could obstruct your view. Being deeper can give you a better view but also that little bit extra time needed. The other thing you have to consider is if it was same foot as the side they’re on (right side + right foot for example) it’s more likely to be a driven shot where you can take the space a bit more but not too much where you lose too much reaction time. Hope that makes sense.

If i want to stop crosses flying over my head (im short icl), do I position myself near to the backpost and wait for its highest point or something, thats what I see in the video?
@lunatic2004
@lunatic2004 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s mostly bout timing, try and catch the ball at the latest moment possible instead of running straight to the ball without reading it cuz then it can easily fly over your head So I’d say instead of going straight to ball as soon as it’s kicked be patient and wait till the latest moment possible u can get it Also keep in mind the striker too So it’s all bout timjng
