In this video we repair a Ryobi 1600 Electric Pressure washer. This pressure washer was discarded because the previous owner thought it was no good any more (literally junk). All I know is that it stopped working. So is it salvageable or is it junk? Watch the video and see, you probably wont believe what's wrong with it. I know it took me by surprise.

@@luma7901 You either have a blockage causing the unit to overheat, or the GFI is overheating and cutting off the power. Try replacing the GFI circuit and see if that helps. It seems to be a common problem with these units.

I have a similar unit, on my third actually and have learned the green lights are your friend. I can't tell if your switch has a green light but, If the GFI plug has a green light , there is power going to it, not necessarily thru it. If the switch on the unit doesn't have a green light on, then you know from the beginning the power cable is bad or the GFI plug needs to be replaced.
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects Жыл бұрын
Yes, mine had the green light lite up, that is why I was confused at first. I later learned as you said that the green light only means power is going to the plug not through the plug.

@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 2 жыл бұрын
The light is irrelevant if it doesn't work. Make sure that the GFCI works. There is a test button, use than and see if it still works. If the little light diode burned out you really don't care. All you care about is that the GFCI works. If it doesn't work, then you can probably get a replacement for less than shipping it to be fixed. If you are so inclined, I would say to fix it yourself. Easier and faster.

I Just cut the cord spliced it and replaced it with another cord For a temporary fix. I Will either be buying a new plug with the surge protector built in or splicing an old hair dryer and stealing that cord for a plug. I suppose I could also add a fuse to my temporary fix and that would work as well. I too got one from someone who thought the unit was junk. They even said they watched your video and said the issue was narrowed down to the plug.... I guess sometimes when you need something now it’s easier to just get a new one and leave the old one. Well one mans trash is another mans treasure!

@@patrickstafford8480 During a hurricane it is illegal in FLA to power your home with electric generator if it is in anyway tied to the grid. That is beacause people do stupid things with electrical wiring they saw on the internet. The power company technicians will come to your home and pull your meter. They don't like to work on live circuits, go figure. Sure they have life insurance, but who'll repair the downed power lines?

Does rocking the power switch on&off really works?
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 2 жыл бұрын
It does not work if the problem is in the GFCI switch. Rocking the switch back and forth only works, if your power switch is bad. But the GFCI has it's own separate circuitry which is not affected by the power switch because it is built into the head of the power plug. It cuts off the power before it ever gets to the power switch.

@ModernDIYProjects

It is not smart to run a device that uses water and electricity without a GFI. Like I mentioned before, it's easy and cheap to get a replacement GFI. You can get one online or at Home Depot and wire it in. If you are plugging the unit into a GFI that is wired into the house, then you are OK because you are already using a GFI. Some people have GFI in their garage wall outlet for such purposes.

Nice vid, how bad is it to leave while bypassing GFCI? Ya, there's water, etc. but I will have the cord WAY far away from machine. Also, it looks like many replacements are 15A, how do you know required spec?
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 3 жыл бұрын
The bad part about not using the GFCI is that you could get electrocuted. If the cord touches water and shorts it can electrocute you if you are standing in the water. It could also blow out house fuses and such. To get a replacement just look at the specs on your machine. Should be stamped on it somewhere. Easy to get a cheap GFCI on Ebay or Amazon or maybe at a local hardware store. If you have an old hair dryer that doesn't work you can take that part and swap it over.

Always check the "test" button on the GFCI first. Could have saved you from dissecting the unit. Live and learn. Odd thing on your unit, mine AND many others I watched on youtube, the white wire is connected to the gold screw (L) and the black to the N neutral (silver) screw. This is opposite the convention where white is Neutral and Black is power. Ryobi had no explanation for this and the GFCI manufacturer just shrugged.

Your GFI is bad, you need to replace it. It is either arching internally or it is trying to reset and not achieving it. Either that or some of the resistors or capacitors inside are messed up. If you open up the GFI you'll see it is packed with electronics. Anyone of them could be bad.

Always check the power cord first. Using a 'Wigi' check the power before the supply and after the supply running the wigi down the cord towards the unit. Sometimes a wire will break inside the cord. From there you would troubleshoot the rest of the unit.

Also dont have to take these units apart first. I know this is your first time but for new viewers just plug it in and remove the small cover and see if you have 110 volts coming out where the two wires connect going to the unit with a multimeter. 90% of the time there will be no voltage coming out...I put a regular two prong male receptacle on mine Im done changing these cheap GFCI protectors Ill take my chances with getting zapped for now on. The cord on these Ryobis is very long so that helps stay dry most times for me and my outdoor receptacle has a GFI outlet...

Not necessarily. It could then be a broken wire, bad connectors, bad switch, bad fuse, any number of things. It could send you down the wrong rabbit whole same as what I did. The GFCI should not light up at all indicating that it is bad.

my gfi died also. Fixed it with a spare (from another dead power washer) and was running. Strange it happened when stored. Never got wet. Don't care why.

It's a very common problem with Ryobi. Cheap products used in production.

@@ModernDIYProjects Interesting followup. RYOBI uses 2 wires past GFI to pump. I replaced with 3 wire. strange cheap manufacturing.

Before you junk it try to lubricate it and stick a small metal rod through it. Sometimes it may be clogged or jammed. Water minerals can be problematic. That is why I always tip mine sideways to make sure all the water drains out.

By the looks of things, you don't seem to know much about electric pressure washers. You should have checked the circuit breaker at the male end of the power cord. Better than opening the whole unit first...smh!!

You can’t strip with a power tool if you UNSCREW
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 3 ай бұрын
Sure you can. If the screws are too tight and you hit it with a powerful screwdriver or impact wrench you can easily round off the head. The screws these days are made out of really cheap metal. Too much torque in either direction and you stripped the heads. Then all you have is a stuck screw and no way to grab it.

I ran through about every electric powerwasher video.. I suggest just cleaning the whole thing. Then open the pump. Careful, oil spilled out on me and it stunk fowl. Even though they're electric, majority still need oil changes. My problem was my machine kept surging. I turned it on and it works. You hit the nozzle button and it fades. So I cleaned the entire pump even with degreaser and wiped everything down. You need to drain the old oil and replace with new. Ryobi there is no easy way to do it so careful of the mess. Some electric PW say no oil necessary which you still do I was using electric powerwash ryobi 1700 (speaking in general, not towards this video)

I had the same problem. I think there is a high failure rate w/ Ryobi GFIs. I ended up using a 15 A plug and bought a 15 A portable GFI. Suggest that you think a little 1st before tearing everything down. Check your power 1st. Just because the LED is lit doesn't mean there is power, as learned the hard way.

Connect water line and nozzle line. Turn on water. Turn on washer. Squeeze gun trigger. Only turns on when trigger is squeezed. Easy peasy.

That would be suicide! The reason for the GFCI is to prevent electrocution. If this thing shorts out and you are standing in water while washing your car, you will be toast, LITERALLY! Always use a GFCI when working with electricity and water!
