Welcome back to the Modern DT&I!
CP Sugar is a newer CTC-controlled block installed by the DT&I in Lima. It controls the diamond and connections from the original DT&I line to the former PRR line from Chicago to Pittsburgh. This line was acquired in the early 2000s from Blue Island to Crestline from Conrail. CTC was installed after the large automotive sorting yard was built on the south side of Lima. Chessie, Norfolk Southern, and the DT&I all utilize the yard, and Conrail maintains a run through train to and from it, making CTC a must.
DT&I signal crews took advantage of the many remaining PRR signals across the line, and have rebuilt several for use in applications such as this. (The models are from East Coast Circuits).
We are set up at East End Sugar. Here, double track coming from the East ends at the connections ahead of the diamond. This is likely the hottest spot to catch trains on the DT&I, with many trains terminating or originating at Ford Park, Cole St., or the auto sorting yard. Add in classic signals, and you have a railfan’s dream!
