this wasn't a video i planned on making, but i got SO many requests to do a video on costume design decisions i dislike and this was one of the first films that came to mind (the other is mentioned in this video). i LOVE the animated beauty and the beast film so much that i had the dish set and the computer game and watched the sequel every christmas as a child. i was really excited for the live action film when it came out, and of course, because i love clothes, i couldn't help but feel disappointed with some of the costume design choices. i have absolutely NOTHING against jacqueline durran or emma watson, i just think this could have been better. obviously all the views in this video are my own, if you disagree that's okay!

Modifying the dress as a "feminist" concept is just so dumb. It reduces what feminism fights for (like erradicating actual violence against women) to just clothing.

Many celebrities see "Feminist" as a noun rather than a verb. It's all about identity and appearance rather than action. And frustratingly that trickles down into ordinary people too. So we end up having lots of irritating discussions about "Can a feminist do this?" or "Can a feminist do that?" rather than "Is this a feminist act?" It rips all the meaning and purpose out of the movement, and unfortunately I think that's the whole point.

@ALLEGRA F But she can't sing! She's like the female equivalent of when they hired Gerald Butler to play Phantom. And even he did a better jobb because he actually showed emotions! Emma kept the same expression throughout the whole film. Seriously, watch a side by side comparison of the animated and live action film. The best scenes to compare are the Be Our Guest and the wolf scenes. Who has more emotion? The one that was made with paper and pencil!

@@Notsomethingtoknow Did you not read the numerous articles about the making of the film, because that's what they're talking about. Emma Watson stepped out if her boundaries as an actress and made so many decisions that wasn't her job to make. That's not a good thing. Films are a team effort and everyone was hired to do their jobs because they have the skills for them. Emma didn't study costume design, screen writing, or cinematography, so she isn't qualified to make such decisions but she did for this film because she wanted to, most likely threatening the production team that she'll leave if they don't do as she says.

In an interview, Emma has admitted that she said no to Cinderella over concerns of how the character stood up as a “role model”. “I didn’t know they were going to make Beauty And The Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella,” she told Total Film. “But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did." Thank goodness she turned down Cinderella.
@Icha74
@Icha74 Жыл бұрын
I read that interview, and I remember how I was annoyed with it. Agree that it was a blessing that Emma turned down Cinderella 2015. Cinderella 2015 was the best Disney movie adaptation to me, hands down. Emma doesn't understand Cinderella, thus she doesn't deserve that role. Cinderella might not be a warrior princess, and ppl might see her passiveness as being weak, but she showed emotions and strengths in both the animation and live action versions. There is an essay concerning how ppl blaming Cinderella for not fighting back and not running away as blaming the victim. In those days, for Cinderella, having a roof over your head would be more important than winning the argument against her stepmother. At least in that house she was physically safe (I disagree of course with the abuse, I just want to point out that Cinderella has a reason to not physically fight back). And in the end, Cinderella's kindness and forgiveness are one of her most endearing traits. If those traits are not the traits of a role model, then what a sad thing the world we live in then... A side note: I see more and more people thinking that Cinderella 2015 is a better movie overall compared to BB2017, and I am glad they start to think so. It's not because I don't like Beauty and the Beast; I love the animation. I just can't relate with the BB live action version.

Emma really missed what Cinderella was about anyway. To still keep a kind heart when you are abused is not easy, and is severely looked down upon by people like Emma who grew up so privileged. The whole "just save yourself" attitude is toxic when you think it can be applied to everybody. and even Belle wasn't a "I'll just save myself" kind of girl, but that's the kind of character Emma wanted to push.

@lxi..
@lxi.. Жыл бұрын
The thing about abusive family is that you *have* to be passive as to not get into trouble. You can't stand up for yourself and not expect there to be dire, dire consequences. In both movies the stepmother and sisters showed that they were capable of putting their hands on cinderella. Could you imagine if Cinderella yelled at them or slapped one of them!? She'd be locked up in the barn bruised and battered. Also, abuse does not make kind people. The fact that Cinderella, was verbally, physically and emotionally abused throughout most of her life up until age 19, and came out of it still kind and sweet shows more emotional and mental strength than any disney princess (or character) made during Walts' lifetime. I was abused by my step family. I'm now 19 and out of it. It did not make me a kind person admittedly and gave me a lot of my own anger problems. Cinderella broke the cycle, the strongest, most incredible thing an abuse victim can do

But seriously, what's the PROBLEM with waist training? I'm not suggesting extremes here, but having a slim waist is kind of necessary to be healthy - I don't mean it's unhealthy to be overall stocky or plump naturally, but if your waist is out of proportion and as big as your hips or bust, that's kind of a giveaway of being overweight, which is unhealthy. If a corset helps to ensure you don't let yourself get overweight, that's a good thing! And that's even without the much more important virtue of support.
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle 2 жыл бұрын
@@cmm5542 A slim waist has nothing to do with being healthy, nor does it have anything to do with one's weight (plenty of even skinny girls have waistlines that aren't substantially smaller than their hips, because people have different proportions and body shapes, not influenced by their body fat. It's _anatomy),_ nor does a corset do anything to "ensure you don't let yourself get overweight." I've worn corsets, and trust me when I say that there's nothing about them that restricts you from eating normally, or even excessively. The only thing that was ever damn uncomfortable to do in a corset was _sneeze._
@cmm5542
@cmm5542 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mokiefraggle Sorry I wasn't clear. I was trying to indicate that because of different body types, just as you said, wearing a corset or having a slim waist naturally or any other health/beauty choices or even natural build can't be seen as signs of oppression. For all we know, a girl with a slim waist who also wears a corset would have a slim waist naturally, and someone without a slim waist may still choose to wear a corset, not to force slimness, but for other valid reasons. I was just pointing out that if a girl DOES have a slim waist or chooses to dress in a way that creates the appearance of a slim waist because she WANTS to, she shouldn't be criticized for upholding 'impossible beauty standards.' Everyone has a right to make their own choices regarding their appearance, regardless of societal expectations. It can be a very big boost to one's self esteem to stand out, and an equal but different boost to meet expectations: it's all about how YOU perceive yourself and the reasons you make your choices.

The problem is that they let Emma Watson have a say in the design of it. She’s not a fashion designer, so she doesn’t have the right “eye” for what works and what doesn’t work, what looks good etc, for a costume. The result is that the dress turned out looking incredibly plain. The part I dislike most is the changes made to the shoulder parts. In Belle’s original dress, it had a gorgeous off-the-shoulder design. Here it’s just simple capped sleeves. The top part of Emma’s dress literally just looks like it could be from a fitted T-shirt. Such a waste, they had the chance to bring the beautiful animated dress to life in the live action remake but instead they went with this basic-af dress
@Coolhandkelpy
@Coolhandkelpy 4 жыл бұрын
I think you’re right. There were actually two dresses for the dance in the film, a longer one with less tiers (what even are those tiers?) and the one you see mainly in the film. You can actually see the longer one used in all the merchandizing. Apparently Emma didn’t want to wear the long one for feeling she would trip during dancing (not as if an experienced costume designer would probably not give an actress a death trap if she knew there was a dance scene, but whatever). And also, there are images of the first iteration of that dress having the half-sleeves iconic of dresses in that period. I’m unsure if it was Emma or higher members of production, but either way the sleeves were scrapped, and with that they lost any sense of cohesion with the costume world around it. The corset refusal (which, like the video says, isn’t even a later, waist-cinching corset, they are stays which keep the breasts in place and a foundation for a dress) is just insult to injury.

Basically, Emma Watson's selfishness ruined the film for all of us.

I agree. Belle isn’t my favorite princess but the actress is here to play Belle, not Emma Watson and express her personal beliefs. Belle’s golden ballgown is just so beautiful and personally one of the most beautiful gowns of the Disney princesses, and that’s what made the scene one of the most iconic scenes Disney ever created! Because its GOLD, it shimmers and makes her shine like a diamond. This dress was so disappointing, not only from it doesn’t even look like the dress but it looks like a diy project gone wrong. My mom made me a beautiful turquoise dress with rhinestones and gathers that looked waay better than the actual dress. This could’ve made Disney live actions worth it if Emma wouldn’t have been so stubborn. Disney should’ve fired her and hired a new actress saying she can express her beliefs somewhere else.

Lots of the fashion houses and companies that made corsets and high-end gowns were actually owned and staffed by women, being the only industry in Europe for a large portion of history that women outnumbered men in. Becoming a successful designer was really one of the only ways a women could become rich herself through work. The history of corsets is pretty “feminist” if you look into it.

I was actually rather disappointed with Belle’s gown in the live action version of Beauty and the Beast. I understand cartoon dresses can defy the laws of science and whatnot; however, compared to Belle’s dress, the skirt of Emma’s dress appeared forlorn and seemed to hang limply with nothing to support its shape. Additionally, the fact that a corset or stays were not worn beneath the gown’s bodice marred the effect, and did not allow for as much of a whimsical, magical Disney appearance. I had expected something elegant and extravagant, something that would appear expensive and almost unrealistic, as that, I feel, is what I have been trained to expect based upon the other creations that through the art of sketching have been presented to me in the animated versions of these Disney films. Moreover, I would have liked to see more extravagant fabrics used in her dress and heavier embroidery to give it that air of wealth. Overall, the dress was not good, but it was not terrible. In my humble opinion, that is.

I find it ironic that feminist actresses refuse to wear corsets as a ‘statement’. The reason people think these entirely inaccurate myths about corsets is because of misogyny. Men felt threatened by a widely female-run industry- corset making. So they invited rumours and exaggerated stories about them so that the industry would fail. i think maybe what they were trying to go for was that belle had these walls up because of how the town treated her and what happened with her mother, and the beast helped her let those walls down and in turn they both learned a life lesson. but the execution of it was done really terribly which i think is probably the issue. it might not be emma’s acting in the movie that’s the problem, it’s probably the writing and/or directing

I feel like they created this vibe of “Belle isn’t like OTHER girls, she’s a feminist and she actually reads books and is SMART so she doesn’t wear fancy ballgowns and she never wears makeup and barely does her hair!” which is why literally EVERYONE is dressed nicer than her, even in the only scene that she has a fancy ballroom moment. And that vibe is cool, Belle isn’t focused on appearance which is part of her charm, but I think clinging to that idea just made the most iconic scene seem lackluster. Also I can’t stand the idea that a smart feminist woman inherently doesn’t care about fancy clothes, hair, and makeup. Like why couldn’t belle be smart, kind, focused on inner beauty, but ready to serve looks at the “ball”?
@hatawaaztec4270
@hatawaaztec4270 4 жыл бұрын
So she needs to look like the girl in a cheap prom dress to reveal her "inner beauty"? What the point of a ball scene and a grand reveille of this horrible dress if not to emphasize her beauty? If she is so feminist that rejects fancy dresses (the closing and jewelry, btw were the only capital women were allowed to have those days and she just... reject it??) why they made a whole scene where she is flaunts in this "beautiful" (no) dress instead of just give her something simple to wear? This scene was IMPLIED as the moment of her heyday, but through the efforts of Emma Watson and the team of costumers, they turned this magical moment into a laughing stock. If Belle does not care about her appearance that much, why did she put on a "beautiful" dress, and did not stay in the clothes she wore in the village? This is simply the poor work of costumers and the inept use of the word "feminism" as an excuse for their own unprofessionalism.

As a medieval-style seamstress, I had to roll my eyes at the feminist corset statement. Corsets are one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing I've ever worn. Like as a big-chested girl, corsets help alleviate so much pain because they support the entire torso and not just the chest. They are a historical item of clothing that allowed women to function in life. But she wouldn't know any of that because no one does any real research on anything anymore.

The prince had a true role! The movie stands for itself, the story is coherent from beginning to end, there are new songs and music etc... Beauty and the Beast was a copy/paste of the animation movie... even the songs were the same, the scenes too etc... so little change!! I was so disappointed... Actually, I prefer the animation movie. The scene where the prince is turning into a human is far better (for me) than in the live action.

ALSO it MUST be noted that corsets were, in fact, a HIGHLY feminist statement during this era. It gave structural support for the working women to do their jobs, and it wasn’t incredibly cinched to give an hourglass look at all times. It was often very breathable, that women would even EXERCISE in corsets in order to maintain stability. These new “feminist” actresses are completely uneducated in historical fashion, as they are not expected to. However, throwing around blatantly uneducated points of “female oppression” is so cringey.

@Maria Giulia Rodriguez you have your timeline so confused. the late 1800s (not the mid 1700s which is when this film would've taken place) is when tight-lacing increased in popularity and became common practice. THAT'S when people actually tried to change their natural shape with a corset (like a modern day waist trainer) and it's what most people think ALL corsets are. unlike modern times where people tend to overexert themselves by attempting to tight-lace themselves into a corset quickly, women of the 1700s wore a corset/stays (NOT a tight one) from very early ages. it made wearing them natural (like a bra) and it was VERY rare for it to actually adjust organ placement. corsets in the 1700s were made with materials of the time and thus were much softer than modern corsets. in regard to the working class they didn't own multiple corsets, they'd have one that they would wear until it couldn't be used anymore, this made their personal corset soft and worn. corsets in the 1700s were literally used as back support (those dresses were HEAVY) and it wasnt until the victorian/edwardian period that the 18-inch waist was what people strived for. you can't lump one time period with another, especially when we're talking about historical accuracy. there is so much research about this i highly recommend checking it out.

Emma saying that corsets are "anti-feminist" and restricting only shows how gosh darn sexist her idea of corsets is. Women DID do everything in corsets, so her saying Belle wouldn't wear a corset to be able to do everything is like saying she wouldn't wear a skirt for the same reason. Like, hell, give Belle a sweatshirt and leggins if you care about comfort and don't care about historical accuracy, why not.

Agreed, otherwise how would anyone get any work done if they were supposedly "restricted" in their corsets? haha Yes, you could run in a corset, dance in a corset and definitely ride in a corset! I would love to see what Belle's dress would have looked like if they had indeed incorporated a corset and had allowed the designers more creative freedom to create an actual magical princess dress which looked as awesome as the singer's dress. Fair enough, maybe Emma didn't want to be carting around 10kg worth of fabric like Cinderella's dress was, but seriously, iconic characters need to have an equally iconic dress.

Also, if Emma Watson were as educated on women's rights and feminism as she likes to portray herself, she would know that men were actually the ones to spread misinformation about corsets in the first place... I respect her morals, but acting isn’t about your personal morals, it’s about becoming this other character with completely different morals. Izzy Izzy brah I know this is late, but the morals of Beauty and the Beast are self sacrificing for those you love and putting people you love needs before your own(Belle chooses to take her father’s place, the beast tells Belle to go to her father(it was his idea) even though he knows he’s going to die and even tells her to take the mirror with her even though he could have kept it to look at her) redemption, forgiveness, personal growth, learning to not judge someone for being different(Belle for being an introverted bookworm and the beast for looking like the beast) the whole thing about Gaston and the townspeople is that they look at things skin deep and judge things for being different from them, they love Gaston because he’s a good hunter and he’s handsome and muscular, but he’s arrogant and rude and a slob. The townspeople are small minded and are just okay with their day to day toiling and their status quo. Gaston is what the Beast would be without the enchantment or without meeting Belle, or without having the servants. Lafou is Gaston‘s yes man, who’s in his shadow because of the status it gets him, in some parts of the movie he’s just as viscous. Gaston wants to marry Belle because she’s beautiful, but then wants to take all her uniqueness away and just turn her into his housewife and incubator. Where are the Beast recognizes her kindness, maturity, intelligence, charm and he wants to do something for HER, something that she likes, something personal, he encourages and accepts what other people call her weird for, he embraces it. (Which is something she said she wanted the song “Belle” “and for once It might be grand, to have someone understand”)I’ve never felt this way for someone before. I want to do something for her”. If he was just her captor she wouldn’t have came back and nurses him back to health, she would have left him in he woods and he wouldn’t have saved her from the wolves and also if this was her being timid she wouldn’t have yelled at him while she was tending to his wounds, Belle isn’t dumb, or timid or naive. She’s emotionally and mentally mature, maybe curious and a little wanderlust, but she’s not a dreamy headed 16 year old like Ariel. I’m not saying this is or isn’t a feminist film, but I think it helps that the one person who said anything explicit sexist(“women shouldn’t read they’ll get ideas” wanting Belle to throw away any of her own ambitions or wants and just be his “little wife”(which she totally resents) and to rub his feet) is shown as the villain and the leader of a literal angry mob and then dies horribly at the end. Sorry for the Ted talk, but I absolutely love this movie and hate when people get shit mixed up about it.

Contrary to popular belief, the corset In Pirates of the Caribbean wasn’t an image of oppression and restrictions. It was a plot device. Elizabeth’s corset was over tightened by her servants (since they are a small English settlement, they likely didn’t use such high-end garments that often, as noted by Governor Swan’s comment “I’m told it’s the latest fashion in London”) which caused Elizabeth to go light headed after James Norrington began to propose, causing Jack to save Elizabeth, slice the ties off, and discover the medallion she hid. nofy bn I’m a woman, but more importantly a historian and Emma Watson couldn’t have been further from the truth. The corset was actually once a garment of empowerment for women. Make of that what you will and maybe do some research before you pretend that you know all about historical sexism simply because you are a woman.

My thoughts exactly. The simple style, the overall single color, the lack of any structural support. It's just like one of those prom dresses from Ali. Overall it just looks too... plain. It also looks like your basic modern gown. Not like a princess dress at all.

I think overall the big problem with the movie was Emma Watson, if she was a true feminist she would know that corsets where created by women for women.

kinda irrelevent but i feel like some feminists that forget that they are allowed to like feminine things and still be a feminist, like how most people went through an "i hate pink phase, ew" when they actually liked pink but didnt want to seem girly. you are allowed to dress "unmodestly" without it being for other people.

Clearly, Emma Watson in her attempts to be a “feminist “, influenced the design of her costumes. As a theatrical costume designer (for 32 years) I have NEVER had an actor influence my design decisions. Actors wear whatever. I design for them and I have always tried to be as historically accurate as time and budget allows. Thank you for this video. It really struck a nerve for me.

While I liked Emma in the movie, she probably should have been fired for not wearing it or they should have tried to build support into the costume so it fit the time period. Overall, I liked the movie but that scene is the most lackluster because she looks way too modern compared to everyone else in it.

Emma Watson really very much wanted to be in this film. And it seemed that Disney also very much wanted her to be in it. They just worked with and around her. Her singing isn't great, so they improved on it. And if she wanted to make a feminist statement, they just let her run with it, because if makes for even more positive selling points. It sort of fits with the character she is portraying, even though the original didn't feel the need to oversell on that. I think that if actors have reasonable doubts or requests during a film, they should be discussed and agreed to where and when possible without it taking away from the final product. I think in this case her "demands" went too far, even if meant with good intentions. It's too bad.

@afootineachworld What would you mean with inappropriate? It's pretty clearly presented what the "depiction" of the character is before applying for the part. You can make some demands in your contract like not showing certain parts of your body uncovered, but otherwise refusing to wear something (albeit health related issues aside) will probably end up in getting you fired. Taking a princess role but refusing to wear a corset because you're trying to make a statement (which doesn't even make any sense) is imo a dick move and it would never have been accepted where I work.

I think it's not just the dress that sticks out in a bad way, it's her whole appearance. Her hair and makeup are too modern; like I think even her eyebrows are noticeably modern in their shaping if that makes any sense. Her hairstyle just says 'Hermione but straighter' (the texture that is). When I think of women in good period pieces set pre-20th century, they almost always have some degree of curl or wave to their hair because curls/waves are genetically more common, I read somewhere. And her posture... eesh.

Now I feel a slight bit more special for having naturally almost bone straight hair, like I don't even need a straightener. XD And I'm sorry to say this, but I also think Emma did wrong for refusing to wear a corset she was originally provided. You are an actor, your job is to bring the character you're acting to life. It's not about some feminist statement told through the movie, but telling the actual story as it is. If the director makes poor choices along the way that's on them, but don't you make the production any more difficult, because you know what you signed up for when you read the script and accepted the role. Please.
