A bit of an impromptu range test - I need to travel 56 miles with a starting GOM reading 51 miles range remaining - will I make it?

Great update on this vehicle in a real world situation. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

As with anything you buy, only buy it if it meets your usage profile. If you never need to do more miles than the range on offer, it's a perfectly decent vehicle. If you need more range once or twice a year, hire a different vehicle from the money saved in running the EV.... I think you have the right attitude to the Kangoo ZE van and I genuinely hope it serves you well for years to come.

Ive been looking at the use I put my car to, and its nearly all short journies of around 40kms. An electric vehicle would be great, but I need it to be as practical as the Fiat Doblo I have now, which has almost van like space with the rear seats folded (my e-bike fits perfectly) so the new Citroen is just too small. I'll start looking in earnest now..

I was surprised that it did so well. I expected the range on the return journey to drop exponentially over the last 25 miles or so.

I’m very glad you made it successfully, and totally agree that 56 miles plus some to spare is a useful range for local trips. Is it wrong that I was hoping for a bit more anxiety? 😬 Am I a bad person?

TBH I was expecting a bit more anxiety too 😂 was surprised it had so much left at the end!

Very good idea, Vans are very useful occasionally for short hauls.

CanZE does work, it allowed me to dispute what the dealer techy claimed was the state of health of my battery. CanZE shows kWh remaining and kWh to full. Add them up and that's your real capacity. It also shows that the real rate of charge is only about 3.05 KW, the 3.6kw AC charger has an appalling power factor. From my experience, with your current range, I reckon your battery capacity is around 17kwh.

Nice seeing these range tests and trip reports. I'd like to share mine, however irrelevant to the UK it might be... Keep in mind, this will be a long comment and my first real experience in a long EV trip. I decided to travel to Eilat, a tourist city 300 kilometers away from where I live, at the northern tip of the red sea. In my MG ZS EV, which has WLTP range of 263km, I expected to stop 120km and 200km (the only options I have really) On the way down, the 120km stop was a hotel parking lot that was absolutely full and I couldn't find the charging spot. 30km later there was a slow charging place I stopped at for an hour (only got 3.3kw probably limited by my cable) and off I went with no AC in the middle of the desert to the second stop. with less then 30km I arrived, only to find a Tesla charging at the only charger in place. After 45 minutes, he left and 45 minutes after that I left with 25kw of charge. 100km later I charged another 15kw at the town charger. The trip took me 7 hours On the way back, charged 15kw at the town charger, then the 200km away stop was empty, and I charged 20kw, the 120km stop was more empty, but had a tesla charging at it also, and was the only one, so I had to wait another hour. Charged another 20kw and came home with about 25% charge. Why was my range so horrible? probably because of 41 degree heat. I could hear the AC working hard to keep the battery cool even when I was sweating. On the way back, I recorded peak consumption of 25.5kw/100km, even though I was going 90kph most of the time. The trip back was 6 hours. The same trip in a gas car takes 4.5-5 hours In an ideal world, I expected it to be 5.5-6 hours and it could probably happen if there was more then 1 charger at each stop. I didn't particularly like to be stuck with no charge in the middle of nowhere, so I preferred to wait for my turn then try my luck. Be happy for the charging infrastructure you have lads. Also maybe it's not a good idea to drive your EV in the desert...

😳 we moan a lot about cold weather performance, guess we never consider it being just as bad in the heat! FWIW, I’m not sure the AC uses so much power it’s worth avoiding it. Heater is the biggest consumer - although it might be different if it’s 40c outside!!

@@ModernHeroes My main take away from the experience is we need more charging stations and I could probably have saved time if it wasn't my first time doing such a journey. But yes. That surprised me as well.

@ModernHeroes

Doesn’t seem a whole lot worse in the cold weather but truth be told I haven’t done much more than very short local work with it recently. Granted the heater is broken so I can’t kill the range with it!

I'm a tradesperson who carries tools and generally my van is full. what's the real range on a used ev with a loaded van say it cold weather? for me vans aren't there yet maybe if you carry super light loads. I would like an electric van but a new vivaro e crew cab is 41k starting with a claimed 187miles pretty unobtainable

Unfortunately the damage to the environment to obtain lithium, and the average life of current lithium batteries does not make them particularly green when production, shipping and extraction is taken into account. After 7 -8 years you’re really needing around 80% workable battery life when the car is scrapped for the battery to be re-used rather than being scrapped. Much more needs to be done on lithium to make it a viable solution, and actually hydrogen fuel cells are much better for the environment if we can reduce production costs, as a battery supplier lithium is pushed as the green solution and it is a stop gap to a better answer, nothing more.
@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes 3 жыл бұрын
Err… this 8 year old van is perfectly usable as I’ve demonstrated, it’s not going to be scrapped any time soon.
