This is currently one of the most ambitious smart home channels on KZbin. Not just promoting local and open source solutions, which is great. But also actively reflecting on innovation and organisation, sharing original 3D prints and more. Loved this video. So relieved that there were no super heroes involved. This makes it much easier for me to recommend this video to others.

There are at least two reasons I love this channel (which I only stumbled upon as of lately). The second is your passion for technology and your way of introducing it. The third reason is the top-notch quality of your videos. Although I agree with most of what you've said, I'd however hesitate to put such an amount of technology in a garden... or even around me. Remember the more devices, the more failure points. And before somebody jumps in with "fault tolerance" and redundancy, I'd insist on the fact that it may become a maintenance nightmare at some point, e.g. because of failures, updates, version incompatibilities, wear out, you name it. It is indeed tempting to use technology to spare some time but in the end it comes with a drawback and it's shifting know-how into machines, losing practice and wisdom, mostly. Besides you may end up spending all the time you initially wanted to spare into repairing, updating, upgrading, bug tracking, adjusting, tweaking... Is it worthwhile in the long run? Time will tell I suppose. BTW I am an electronics engineer who acknowledges his laziness. Wanted to share my two pence, hope you don't mind. Anyway keep up this awesome work.
@handsonkatie
@handsonkatie 3 ай бұрын
This is a great point - I should probably cover this in a video at some point. ie these devices save me thousands of hours every year, so I'm very, very comfortable that the occasional cleaning or changing of David Mowie's blades is worth the hundreds of hours of mowing he does in return. But your point is very sensible - indeed I've lightly touched on this in the past, a lot of modern smarthome devices have lost the plot and are more aimed at commercial goals (eg pushing ads, distracting your attention etc) than serving you (saving you time, making life easier). Then on top of that, the quality of the engineering makes a huge difference - a poorly engineering Robot Lawnmower will cause all the problems you describe! So there's definitely an assessment that's needed and careful balancing of the pros and cons - this is why I tend to centre much more on the companies and their ethos' than simply products on their own - the former often tells you lots more about the latter.

Another area that fits in with your gardening theme is outdoor cleaning. There are many robots for cleaning your floors indoors, or moving the lawn outdoors, but what about cleaning an outdoor deck eg a tile or timber deck. There is cross over to indoor cleaners but you outdoor cleaners can come up against larger items (leaves, twigs etc), as well as moisture (puddles) or rain. Something on this would be cool
@handsonkatie
@handsonkatie 3 ай бұрын
That's a really good thought, I'm not aware of a decking/outdoor tiles/paving robot cleaner, but feels like a no-brainer for a robot vacuum company to branch out... indeed, have a video releasing today with a company that basically has created the perfect solution for this, just needs some outdoor weatherproofing and a few more 'rugged' features...!
@JohnVanderbeck

Weeding is one area I really need help with. Ever since becoming a homeowner, I've struggled to keep ahead of weeds growing just randomly in the courtyard. No beds or anything, just growing right up through the rocks or mulch or even pavers that are the ground cover. And it isn't even "being lazy" it's that I genuinely can't keep up with them. They grow faster than I pull them out! I've gotten so desperate I want to hire someone to do it. I would love a smart tech solution to this, but sadly everything I've seen, including Farm Bot is designed to work in beds specifically and not in general landscape area.
@handsonkatie
@handsonkatie 3 ай бұрын
Oh I know - Tertill takes a chunk away, but there's no perfect solution yet - indeed it might actually come from somewhere unusual like robot vacuum firms creating mini versions with far more power (have one coming up next week on this!) they'll get there, just needs some time!

There are some excellent concepts there Katie. Our robot mower (Stiggy) has revolutionised grass cutting. My wife thought it was a lot to spend on something to cut the grass using a satellite - but she changed her mind within a few days of having him. He literally saves us a day a week in the summer months. Unfortunately, as with most robot mowers, he cannot do absolutely everything, such as right to the edges or the really rough stuff, so a bit of human assistance is still required. As an example, due to the layout of our property and the need to enclose the vegetable garden in an electric fence, we have to resort to some old fashioned big boys toys as well - a couple of petrol mowers and a flail on a compact tractor deal with the rest. Grass cutting is now about 90 minutes a week - so acceptable. Oh, how I could spend thousands and thousands on the tech that you have presented in this video and I would love playing with it so as to hone toward a perfect garden. I just wish I had the finances to do it. Sadly not. That said - looking at how you are now able to go about doing your gardening, to buy all of the tech needed, I think I would be willing to take an additional job, or maybe two or even three, if it means that my wife would dress like you do when gardening. At which garden centre do you buy those gardening outfits? - Our local garden centre only seems to have barbour jackets, flat caps and stupidly unsuitable gardening gloves. :=)

Totally right Ian - I'll touch on this in future. A lot of people seem to think automation is about doing 100% of a task, this has never actually happened. Robot lawnmowers are amazing though - save hours and hours every week, leaving just the trimming around the edges for me!

OK, so it is a fascinating and inspiring video, showing the full potential of home automation - we have learnt to expect that, every time, and you delivered in spadeloads. I'm a mad keen gardener and actually enjoy weeding my flower beds but hate (weird, I know) HATE weeding my fruit & veg patch! Ideally, it needs doing at least daily and pays back in dividends. As a Brit, we all struggle with slugs and much the best long-term solution, even in damp conditions, is daily hoeing. If any of you ever visit the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth, Powys go for a walk around the veg garden and eat in the restaurant! I am not a vegetarian but I defy anyone to eat as well for ten times the amount of money! Truly superb, and nearly all grown on-site by their magnificent gardener. He has the help of many volunteers all summer (at least), all hoeing away everyday and no slug or snail issues whatsoever! I actually came here to say how good the video was and that the links in the description are every bit as valuable! A fantastic resource

Yes, it's been developed for over a decade across the world (check their site), so it's pretty robust. Personally I'd treat it as an early 3d printer - ie it's not zero maintenance, but it saves you a massive of time (weeding, planting, watering etc) in return for costing a bit of time (maintaining, tweaking etc!). And as its open source, you know you'll be able to upgrade/develop in future too!

I am not overly fond of "weeding". Just because the plants are not useful to us or contend with space with other plants we find we find useful, that does not mean those "unwanted" plants are weeds. Look up why fireflies are rarer. More Native Plants and Gardening and rewilding. Please look into this. Especially given the insect population decline and the effects of local ecosystem destruction on climate change.

Hey, this is a great comment and point - I must say I don't take the 'passive' view, ie just let weeds grow wild. To me the idea that nature is solely 'nurturing' doesn't correlate to the reality (eg natural over-predation, over-growth and natural eco-system change can wreak havoc on species). So I take the stance of we should positively enhance our gardens and help to balance - which is exactly the point you make, just from a different perspective. Eg you saying we should have more native plants and rewilding inherently requires 'weeding' - ie we need to get rid of something to re-introduce the natives! In terms of insects, couldn't agree more - things like creating a beehive is something I'd absolutely love to do as a project (maybe next year!). Likewise I think all this smart tech - whether weeding or mowing is a wonderful improve to the status quo - my mower remulches relentlessly and controls moss that way, rather than chemicals. Likewise mechanical weeding is vastly superior to weedkillers (and it reduces the fertiliser requirements as it doesn't remove nitrogen). I could do a whole video on this topic alone - great comment!

🤣 it's alright, I studied electrical engineering, so I understand radiation - you know radio waves have larger wavelengths than buildings for example....😉 Mobile, microwaves etc are non-ionising, assume you're not scared of light, which is closer to the dangerous forms (eg x-ray, gamma etc)
