Oh perfect, phone is useless as ID in UK, so still needed. But if you and all family have smart watches and phones, then totally agree you can get away with even less these days (of course for 20x the price!!). Ultimately, we'll get to smart rings taking over a lot of what watches do also, so this'll reduce it even further!

I have a wonderful old-fashioned leather wallet that is 2cm thick when all the cards are in there. There's hardly space for cash. It's made by a company that's been making leather goods for 150 years. It develops a wonderful patina over time. When I enter my home, I have to walk over to a light switch to switch on the light. This is good for me. I have sitting work. More sitting and being able to do everything from my chair is bound to give me a heart attack before I'm 55. I like walking to a switch. Adding biometrics to my home is an invasion of my visitor's privacy. Fencing entry times is an indication of distrust in my visitors. I choose to not live my life this way. So while I love these video's, all of this is just not particularly healthy or necessary. If anything, it feels vaguely dystopian. Instead, I have coats that feature some pockets. I will say that tennis outfit is highly distracting. There's naught dystopian about that, and I'm at an age where I'm not easily distracted.
@handsonkatieКүн бұрын
Oh this is a fascinating perspective - I need to do a video on this at some point. I definitely try to balance the two - ie avoiding being a luddite and irrationally ideological about the past (eg where lifespans were 40 years and people lived in abject poverty) whilst avoiding the ideologies of the modern (eg where technology fragments human relationships, cognitive focus and more). You're totally right that reducing everything to chairbound control doesn't really help, BUT the ability to do waaaay more than any light switch can increase activity (eg the ability to set scenes so the kids can press to instantly create 'dance mode' lighting and music increases activity over the traditional switch). Of course I wouldn't use biometrics to random visitors, that's for close family - to again reduce the number of devices and things they need to carry. So to summarise, your point on 'health' is the perfect point - we shouldn't be deluded that people were 'healthy' in the past, we know this from lifespans, disease instances, nutritional information and contemporary sources, but likewise we shouldn't assume that all technology or advances will increase health - as you rightly point out, they can significantly reduce it. Perfect bad example - TV has been largely negative in my view for health, whereas things like the Farmbot are super exciting to me as they allow me to increase health - ie local, self-grown food that's way beyond what I could ever produce myself - doesn't stop me gardening and manually growing even more, just increases the amount of 'hyper local' food that I consume and minimises all the shop-bought equivalents. Likewise materials like leather are something I want to play with too, so that's a good reminder! Great comment and be great to chat more on discord channel - I love creative thinkers!

My experience with it so far is less overwhelming. I got mine yesterday, and have only played around with it a little bit so far. Some of the issues are my fault, since I may have been a little to eager to get going. I missed the quick start guide because it was behind the warranty card that I put aside. I initially did not find the T-connector to connect the water station supply because it looks slightly different from what their video shows. I tried to set up the S10 without the water station initially thinking I could add it after I got the parts I needed but that caused the setup to fail when it needed the location of the water station. I do believe there is significant room for improvement in their documentation and app, especially when things aren't working. At one point the device failed to dock to the water station and said it "paused" but I couldn't find how to unpause it. I have had to re-pair the bot several times to both stations. It also took various attempts to get the bot to load water from the water station for some reason. With little to no information why it failed. Now that everything appears to be set up correctly the bot is able to vac and mop. It is somewhat louder than expected, certainly louder than what I made out from this video. Both when vacuuming and when the mop is being dried. It is certainly not terrible (40dB close up while drying) and I'm probably spoiled living in a nearly air-tight house but it something to consider. The mopping has left some stripes on our tile floor during the first run, that is something I will need to look into. I also raised several issues with their website, from the short password length supported to the fact that after registering I can log on in the app but not to the website.
@handsonkatieКүн бұрын
Hey Bram! Oh dear, sounds like a lot of initial challenges! Few thoughts - skipping the quick start/manual.... yeah <awkward shuffle> I might have done that too... manuals are for when you have nothing better to do!! ;) This re-pairing sounds very peculiar, I've not experienced that at all - is there any issue with wifi cold spots where your waterstation or charging station are located? Certainly I can't speak for the sounds levels, I find it much quieter than my old iRobots - the emptying of these devices is always noisy, but I find him very quiet as he trundles around - that said I perhaps have a different level of 'noise' with two mad children running around, than your silent sounding nirvana!! Mopping stripes I noticed too, but that just disappears after the first few runs - I think this is just the mop getting balanced out a bit, so it's a temporary issue I'd say. Great thoughts though, I think it's great to hear all these experiences as it's impossible to get as rounded a perspective without people sharing their own experiences! I agree on some of the instructions being a little confused between what was obviously printed/filmed originally vs where the app has evolved to now - so definitely some ways they could improve (even if I probably still won't read the instructions!!) - but once it's set up, it really has been fire and forget for months and months, I can't even calculate how much mopping time it's saved me, because I'd never have done anything like this amount!!
@handsonkatieКүн бұрын
Ps quickly checked noise levels, it's pretty much in the pack (mid lower end vs other robot vacuums) - certainly it seems there's a trade off of performance vs noise levels as you'd expect, but there's not a huge difference in performance.

@@handsonkatie thanks for the reply! I blame it on aborting the setup because the water station wasn't set up. Since everything was paired up correctly it hasn't happened again. Had it clean and mop two floors today. Not sure I have done that right as it involved picking it up and moving up and down the stairs a couple of times and it again ended it a state where it was paused when it couldn't get from the water station to auto clean station. I did enable the feature marked beta "water station not marked" so hopefully that will improve over time. On a positive note: I pointed out to their privacy team that the link to the terms and conditions on the registration page was wrong yesterday at 17:32 PM CET. And they replied after it had been fixed today at 10:38 CET. That is impressive. I also received an email that there has been an update to one of the other issues I opened yesterday but the reply itself is missing from the email and the link in it goes to their main support page. So that is less helpful.

@BramMertens hey Bram! Yes, they are actually very responsive to feedback and bugs, just naturally can't fix everything in one go. I do wonder about this odd water station behaviour. One random thought, you know how it comes with a 'non plumbed' water station too, have you tried putting this on the other floor to test? I just wonder if it might help diagnose that is the problem? The other thing is to make sure it's recognising the other floor as a separate map and you let it fully map it too. Drop me a note on my site if you want to chat though more as can share images/photos there and keen to get fully mapped!

As a person who has had 1 Creality V3KE replaced and is still now trying to get that replacement to print properly after 11 months and countless emails back and fourth with "support" I would strongly advise against Creality for anyone who just wants to print with minimal headaches and not wasting $$ on filament. Don't misunderstand, it does print but just not without constant tweaking and (in my case) constant replacement of parts by Creality (for free) to get the printer "working" which it still doesn't. On the upside I have learned (more than I ever thought I wanted) about the workings of 3D printers & slicers "tear-downs" included. Creality just doesn't have the QC to back up to their marketing claims. And from constantly being on the forums this is an issue across all models. While I don't have a Bambu (yet) I only hear great things about them. That A1 print of the figurine was amazing.
@handsonkatie3 күн бұрын
Yes, that's been my experience with my Creality printer (CR10 Max) - I actually got it to print reliably after I replaced the hotend, stock fans, PSU fan, bed, extruder, firmware and a bunch of other stuff - so basically a new custom made printer! I have heard this an awful lot about Creality, I can't quite say why their printers are so much less reliable, Bambu Lab seem able to produce devices at the same price point, so as you say, it must be more about QC/engineering quality. I'm sure they've improved over the years, but Bambu Lab really are the benchmark for reliability IMO.

The major issue with smart locks is the fact they can't be used with multipoint locks, (not well anyway). Most front doors in the UK now are multipoint so it makes these devices kind of pointless.
@handsonkatie3 күн бұрын
Like my doors...which these work perfectly with.... ☺️ Like I touched on SwitchBot seem to have nailed this!
@devlifedotnet3 күн бұрын
@@handsonkatie interesting.... how does it manage the handle lift to engage the multipoint when you lock? because that's always been the problem I've had as my doors require the handle lift before it can fully rotate the key to lock the main deadbolt... the most important feature for me would be the ability to lock automatically as part of a night routine or geolocation automation if I leave my house. @handsonkatie4 күн бұрын
Oh the mechanics are quite different (except for the stepper motors and x/y axes) - laser tech is much more complex than 3d printers (which are basically very cheap heaters, melting plastic!). You can get cheaper lasers - eg xTool do some starting at around £250, so you can check them out, but I would aim for your sort of price point to get all the ease of use, features and more. Check out the links in my description and browse xTool's site, the S1 or the M1 are great lasers that are very capable, but if you were quick, the M1 Ultra is heavily discounted, so around $1000 for the next day or two

I have designed my own wallet, with built in finder and rfid tag (for the exact same purpose), because no wallet I could find today could do what I wanted: Be flexible on the amount of cards it can hold. Sometimes I carry 4 or 5. Sometimes a bit more. So I made it stretchy. I also incorporated in it the finder because I had this finder card from the brand tile, because once the battery is dead, you have to get another one card. Which is bad for the environment and expensive. My wallet is a bit thicker than yours, to be able to fit in the tag and microcontroller (also added a small coin pocket so I can use on shopping kart release). The smart lock is still in development but it will cost around 20 euro of material and parts. I find absurd the price smart locks are today, do I refuse to buy them. Mine will open by proximity (via Bluetooth) with the wallet. I often find myself with hands full when approaching the door and zi wanted to solve this issue. But indeed these details are so useful, specially for people like me that loses their wallet all the time (mine beeps when I need to find it in the house).
@handsonkatie4 күн бұрын
This sounds great once you've got the lock developed!! I do feel for companies like SwitchBot, it must be a nightmare trying to design for completely world solutions in standards-free domains like locks! (I can see why it'd be much simpler for you to design for your specific locks, so fingers crossed it works!! )
@tinkerman-q4 күн бұрын
@handsonkatie thank you. And yes, what you say is true True, though I will try to make it work for more locks other than mine (a bit more generic) . One of the challenges I have is that here in the Netherlands, you need to replace the lock cylinder for a security (longer) one. This is because, by default, if you have an inserted key on one side, you can't open from the other side, which in case the Smart lock become unresponsive, you're locked out. I plan to address this (making it really plug and play, not require cylinder swap), by making a mechanism that will both turn and pull the key. But that is easier said than done without using an extra motor, which would just make the smart lock too bulky and more expensive. By the way my other motivation to do it is to not requiring setting up account, yet another phone app or connection to the internet. No one should need to share personal information to open their doors. If everything works out, I plan to open source it, so others can build or adapt it.
@handsonkatie2 күн бұрын
Ah gotcha, it's amazing how we've been making locks for thousands of years and we still can't get to a standard across countries!! This sounds great and it'd be amazing to open source. One tiny note, the Switchbot Lock works fine without any cloud connection too - you can bounce through Home Assistant to keep entirely local if you fancied - as you say, this would reduce yet another cloud ping if that's the priority!
@tinkerman-q2 күн бұрын
@@handsonkatiethat's good to know, even better that you can do HA, with it. Specially appealing to use geeks. But I was going a little further than that by not requiring any integration at all. Make the barrier to entry as minimal as possible so grandpa and grandma can also Have one. The smart lock would be put in access point mode which you connect your phone to, then input WiFi credentials via browser to have it join your WiFi. From there you can do all setup you want without need an extra app, just the browser on your phone. I am thinking of making pluggable modules. For example, in addition to the built-in Bluetooth, WiFi and rfid, allow attaching any other form of "key", for example a fingerprint sensor. That the can also be be configured via a this tiny webserver the smartlock hosts (add/remove fingerprints). Preserves privacy, easy setup, does not depend on Internet (should be operable purely based on its flash memory, reducing failure points). Also though about doing it via BLE which would allow hosting a github page that can communicate with the device via javascript once it is Bluetooth paired with the phone.

Maxing out the Black Friday spam content this week Katie! 😂

Erm, not sure this fits the definition of either Friday or spam, but don't worry, just watch the video in a week's time and you can pay full price for anything I've used if you'd prefer?? And of course, you can pay for the free files too if you fancy! 🤣🤭

I've loved my black Ridge wallet for many years, time for a change. Thanks for maintaining great video production quality!

Great example of how tech is changing things - there's really not a huge difference between a carbon fibre ridge wallet for £125 and a £0.18p 3d printed version! I might make a 'pop up' version for 5-6 cards, it'll naturally be a little bit thicker, but not much!

Amazing timing as had just been looking at Ridge wallets as got a new car that came with a keycard. Was thinking surely I can 3d print one. Would love the nano files.Thanks Katie.

Of course, I'll upload later tonight - I'll make the depth parametric so everyone can adjust to suit their own needs!
