Things can be done quicker and easier by exploring new technologies, deinterlining, etc.

1 train is that the 7 and L were the first lines chosen for CBTC is that they are easier than other lines having not to intersect with a lot of lines through tracks.

This system is better then computer based interlocking system 👍

Track Circuits detect presence of trains puts signals at Red, they can be false fed, signals show clear aspects trains rear end each other.

Installing CBTC in the entire MTA network will cost nearly 100 billion dollars

I do not support the absurd military spending. However, $100 BILLION to invest in a RELATIVELY small city's subway is also absurd.

CTBC sounds like a simpler form of ACSES. ACSES is a Positive Train Control solution used by Amtrak on the Northeast Corridor.

+cActUsjUiCe CBTC is more advanced, it's basically a step away from driverless trains (that step being the unions).

Unions aren't the only barrier. There is a safety barrier that CBTC alone doesn't address and that's people being on the track. Even D.C. a system built around CBTC type technology doesn't have driverless trains, but the Air Train to JFK does. The key is station platforms that close off the tracks so people can't fall, or jump on them while a train is operating. Not sure NYC will see driverless trains until there is either a technology in place that secures the tracks in stations, or they install station train doors that automatically open when the train arrives and closes to allow the train to leave. Most modern Subways already incorporate this. There are other issues as well, not just union.

@@michaeldodd9671 Not true. Look at the DLR in London. Though they have a train operator ("captain") they are not drivers: they stand in the middle of the car and do not look out the front window. Their network has open platforms. The main duty of the DLR captain is door operation. It really is a union issue.

@@straightpipediesel yes and it's caused problems for the DLR like in this example: www.ibtimes.co.uk/uk-student-killed-by-train-stratford-station-after-falling-onto-tracks-during-fit-1497859

Liability is definitely an issue. Unions didn't stop the MTA from closing the towers in the IRT when they went to ATS. They can help by fighting the distribution of responsibilities to other positions, but not when you completely eliminate the responsibilities altogether.

I hate CBTC. The fixed block system gives the motorman a more accurate idea of what lies ahead and the automatic train stops will physically prevent accidents. This just seems to be a means of saving money for the politicians. People forget that the trains ran smoothly on a fixed block system. This being because the TA actually put more money into the system to maintain it back then. I personally loathe cheap, corporate excuses such as, (in this case), CBTC.
@TheRailLeaguer

Blake McNamara CBTC will increase service beyond what is already possible. And even if they put in the same money to maintain the signal system as before, the old signals are from the 1930s. They’re old and the timers they installed since 1995 only made service worse. CBTC is easier and cheaper to maintain, which means more money to use to increase service.

Thomas Mann What do politics have to do with replacing an old antiquated signal system with a modern one users all over the world?
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 5 жыл бұрын
Biohazard Skunk Unfortunately the F travels on the Queens Blvd Line, a line that is already at capacity at any hour. At this point there’s no longer any room on the line to increase service on all 4 of its tracks. To combat this, the MTA has no choice but to install CBTC on the line, which means that the F will have CBTC cars as well. 1486 R160s (250 5-car sets and 59 4-car sets for the M), will be allocated for the new service, including the F line. So goodbye to the garbage fixed block signaling system and hello to CBTC and more frequent service. Welcome to the future, where fixed block is eliminated in favor of more modern CBTC signaling.

I do not want to see driverless subways in New York City. . The trains should always have a train operator , and a conductor .

MAURICE WELLS Nobody is proposing a driverless NY Subway. Train operators will simply monitor the CBTC and ATO systems and take over if necessary.
