WARNING: Extremedly unpopular opinions ahead. From the post-reinassance era, my favourites are Atlantis, Dinosaur, the Emperor's new Groove and Lilo and Stitch. I also think Home on the Range is a little bit underrated. I also really dislike Chicken Little and Brother Bear. Bolt and Meet the Robinsons are kinda bland or meh (althought the messages are great in both). Treasure Planet is great, but it would have been better if it was set in the seventeen century. Too bad Clemens and Musker wanted it to be futuristic since the very inception of the movie.

Actually, Brother Bear is very unique Disney film, focusing only on brotherly love instead of romance, and coming before Zootopia with the dealing of discrimination, and the only thing it did have from the Disney formula was the use of magic and transformation, and even that was quite different and new.

In retrospect, it is very different and capitalized on the foundation that Lilo and Stitch created. I agree that it does feel very different but for those going off of only the animation style, the songs, and the previews, I understand why people weren't going to the theater to see it and why critics were clamoring for something new considering that movies from Pixar and Dreamworks were knocking it out of the park. I'm actually glad I saw this movie for the first time as an adult because its message is so powerful and you can see the connection between it and movies like Zootopia and Moana. -Josh

I grew up in the 2000s so I watched most of these as a child. Ironically I saw all of them except Treasure Planet, which is now my favorite of the bunch and one of my favorite Disney movies. For some reason I loved Home on the Range and had toys of all the characters but I can’t stand that movie now. The idea of aliens in Chicken Little terrified me so I hated it. Brother Bear has always been close to my heart, and as a Shakespeare fan now I can’t imagine how Brother Bear would have been King Lear inspired at one point lol. Meet the Robinsons is also a really nostalgic one for me. A lot of these movies might be collecting dust to Disney now but I still love most of them.

I think they will all find some new life on Disney+. I saw Brother Bear for the first time when it was on Netflix a few years ago and really fell in love with that film. I'd even put it as my favorite of the era above Lilo and Stitch. -Josh

Treasure Planet and Meet the Robinsons are my two personal favorites. The later was fun and enjoyable with a clear message behind it while the former is an underrated classic that had a lot of thought and passion behind. Can't say the same for Home on the Range and Chicken Little though. It's bit sad how they close the 2D animation division and started focusing more towards CGI.

At the time I totally understand why they decided to not do 2D anymore but now people are clamoring for it again and I think we should see at least one movie make its way to the theaters in the next 10 years that feels like traditional Disney animation. -Josh

Thanks for uploading the final video from the post-renaissance era. I agree that following the critical and financial success of Lilo & Stitch, Disney has been going through a rough period in the next two to three years with Treasure Planet and Home on the Range bombing at the Box Office due to competition with other movies released in the same weekend and the rise of Pixar, DreamWorks Animation and Blue Sky entering the ring. It was a tough time for Disney if you ask me. Treasure Planet was also another Post-Disney Renaissance film I enjoyed watching besides Lilo & Stitch and Emperor's cause basically this was a dream project that Ron Clements and John Musker had been wanting to make, but due to the cost it suffered at the Box Office due to competition with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, among others. It's unfortunate cause I grew to appreciate the movie as I got older from the animation, the voice acting, the score, music from the Goo Goo dolls and Jim Hawkins relationship with John Silver. Chicken Little is still a "guilty pleasure" upon rewatch despite the negative reception the film had and I also enjoyed Meet the Robinsons due to it's simple narrative story and the message of "Keep Moving Forward". Thanks again you guys.

I actually had not seen it until making this video. It's obviously a bit dated but most CGI is however the colors and visuals are beautiful and seeing that the hybrid of 2D/3D never went anywhere stinks. I'm hoping that will change with Jennifer Lee in charge and with the success of some of the shorts (Paperman,Feast, etc.) that have used that hybrid model. -Josh

From around 1994’s The Lion King to 2007’s Meet the Robinsons there was 2 core themes that bonded many of the Renaissance and Post Renaissance animated features together. 1. The Smelting Of Bonds Among A Family Nucleus Many of the protagonist’s (and even some of the side characters) motivation stem from feelings pertaining to an immediate family member. Note that non-biological ties carry the same weight as the former. 2. The Forging Of External Social Groups (AKA Sense Of Community) This manifests as broadening their social circle, moving on to a new community, attempting to become more fully integrated in their present one, to reaffirming present ties. Some protagonist, e.g. Jim, juggles several; a new job environment & becoming a sub culture member.

I adore this era! Haven't seen Dinosaur, Home on the Range, Fantasia 2000 or Brother Bear (though I do want to see the latter 2 and am OBSESSED with Fantasia 2000's version of the Little Tin Soldier as well as Brother Bear's soundtrack, even using On My Way as my graduation song). I used to love Chicken Little as a kid (haven't seen it recently enough to say if I like it now). And Meet the Robinsons, Emperor's New Groove, Lilo and Stitch, Atlantis and Treasure Planet are some of if not my top favorite Disney Movies of all time, even though I didn't even watch Atlantis and Treasure Planet until last year as far as I can remember. Great film era despite it's hardships, didn't realize that Pixar played such a huge role in these movies not doing too well. I still think it deserves a better name than post-renaissance though. XD

From watching a few of these videos in a row I've started to find it funny how many times in row they keep failing. (Even though all these movies are pretty good at least on some level.) I just imagine the crew screaming obscenities every time they fail again.

What's interesting about looking back at history like this (thanks for watching these videos) is that you see how our perspective is skewed. A lot of people are saying how horrible Disney is doing right now but the truth is they are just fine. A majority of recent films have still made their money back and then some. Times like the early 2000s or the 1970s were really bad and today's Disney is just coasting along fine. It could be better, but it's nowhere near the verge of collapse.

The Wild is a tricky film as for some reason it is considered part of the lineup in the UK, however it wasn't actually made by Disney animation. It was actually made by CORE animation studios and distributed by Disney.

I have nostalgia for Chicken Little because my teachers would show it when I was in elementary school. They also showed Meet the Robinson, which is a great movie! Even with the nostalgia I have from Chicken Little, it is no where as good as Meet the Robinson.

Treasure Planet I feel like should be either in two parts or a trilogy. It feels big but was condensed for the story and the end wrapped up. It should've been more like the Pirates of the Carribean trilogy or the first movie be about character development and the second to expand the world.

Treasure Island, due to its countless film adaptations, has really been altered from the book. It picks out the cliff notes and runs with it. Seemingly all of the films do that. Would love a mini-series take at some point. Give more of a slow build to the day Silver turns on Jim. It would add much more meaning and tension. -Josh

In my opinion, i think Bolt should be considered to be the last Post-Renaissance film, as it didn't have the same box-office and critical success as Tangled, Frozen or Zootopia

It wasn't a major hit but was the first film that critics actually liked in years and made pretty good money. It propelled the company in the right direction. The same can be said for Princess and the Frog. It didn't knock it out of the park but it got Disney on base again which is what they needed. -Josh

JJ Quakes We are getting Rays and the Last Dragon in March 2021 (pushed from its original Nov 2020 date. I totally agree that we have likely seen the end of the revival BUT I’m definitely not for sure on that. I can definitely make part one and may hold off on part 2. Wow this is a rough era for Disney. A lot of films coming out at the time such as Home on the Range, Chicken Little, and The Wild did put damage to the company as a whole. I'm glad that the positive reviews of Meet the Robinsons, and the critical/modest box office success from Bolt(despite some speculating that film to be the first revival film)led to a new era of Disney starting with the first African American princess Tiana, and later Rapunzel.

I've always thought of Brother Bear as okay, it was good enough. Lilo and Stitch was my favorite of this era because it was the one to get the most laughs and emotion out of me. I also went to see Atlantis as a kid and formed a nostalgia for it as the animation was so great. Now I actually didn't see Treasure Planet until I was an adult as I don't think I even knew it existed but I actually really enjoyed it. The only disney movie that i've never seen yet is Home on the Range and I'm not in a hurry to ever give it a watch.. and the one I dislike the most is Chicken Little which is the only movie from this era that I actually disliked, but If I saw Home on the Range, i'm willing to beat that I wouldn't like that either.

I prefer to call the Post Renaisance Era the Experimental Era of Disney. I like Disney a lot more than Pixar and Dreamworks. There is the appeal of magic. I also enjoy them as both a kid and adult. Of this era, the only movies that come off as too childish are Emperer's New Groove, Home on the Range and Chicken Little. The rest of the movies are fine. I don't care for Dinosaur either, but it has a decent amount of maturity. Here are the movies individually. Treasure Planet This is one Experimental Era movie I never saw at all when it came out. When I watch this video, I can see why. It was buried under too much competition. This movie has Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets of all things. Dude. At the time I was absolutely obsessed with Harry Potter. So I would watch that movie over Treasure Planet any day. The Lord of the Rings the Two Towers came out that same year. I was also obessed with Lord of the Rings so I would watch that movie two. The Disney Renassance was my childhood. Later Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings were my adolescence. I only learned about Treasure Planet recently. One of my favorite critics is Lily Orchard. Treasure Planet is one of her favorite movies. She praised the movie for having visual creativity. That was enough to get me to try out the movie. I do like this movie. Yeah it is not one of my favorite Disney movies, not by a long shot. It certainly can't hold a candle to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. However on its own it is a very fun and interesting movie. I find the behind the scenes interesting. There is a passion project with a long time of the making. There is interesting CG. Of the four Musker and Clements movies, my favorite is Hercules. It is one of my favorite movies in the Disney canon. Brother Bear Oh yeah. This movie is awesome. It is my favorite movie of the Experimental Era and one of my favorite movies of Disney in general. It is interesting that the video compares it to the Lion King. That movie is my favorite movie of the Renassaince Era, which in turn is my favorite Disney era. It is another one of my favorite movies in the canon. Brother Bear is fantasy instead of sci fi. That makes it different from a lot of the movies of the era. The magic is used in a whole different way. That is something I am very fond of. Of all Disney movies, Brother Bear has one of my favorite depictions of magic. It is more about cool effects and flashy visuals. It is about connecting with the spirits and the animals. I find traditional Native American spirituality to be fascinating. I love how this movie dives in. There is wonderful nature here. Two other favorite Disney movies of mine is Frozen 2 and Moana. They also get into the traditional spirituality of nature. They may have followed the trend that Brother Bear has. I think the earliest in the trend is Hercules. It does have the traditional spirituality. Greece is a good place to start, because it has the most famous mythology in popular culture. This is also my favorite mythology. I recently rewatched Brother Bear. There is another thing I noticed that is good. I like the timing of the Ice Age. It fits so well. When I get older I study about geology and its history. The Ice Age had large mammals, particularly in north America. There were creatures like mammoths and saber toothed cats. Later they died off in a mass extinction. There are two main causes that may have contrubuted to this event. One is that the climate got too cold, and it was difficult for the mammals to survive. Another reason is that the animals were overhunted by the humans. The second reason is shocking. I think of Native Americans as being respectful of nature. So it is weird to think of them causing a mass extinction. I speculate that they were more vicious in the past, and they learned to be more respectful later on. Nature based religions were all over the place in anchient times. I consider this time to be the best time for religion and spirituality. I think one reason why nature spirituality was so prominent is the practical side effects. This was way before modern science. So people didn't understand environmentalism in the modern secular sense. Instead they viewed nature as sacred and worth of respect. Part of that respect is taking care of the environment. The people with such traditions can survive better, because they can manage their resources better. They can avoid problems like extinction, pollution, global warming etc. It is wonderful for a young Native American man to go on a journey to respect nature. He is guided by bear spirits. Yet it is even better when it happens during the ice age of all times. That is the crucial time when Native Americans really need to learn it. The main character does remain a bear in the end. However his brother learned the lesson too, and remained human. The he taught the lesson to the other humans. This teaching provides a small framing device for the movie. Oh this movie is so good. I gush.

Home on the Range Oh no. This movie makes me cringe. I think this is the worst movie of the Experimental Era. It is so bad. It is ironic that this came after the best movie. The other bad movies of the era have something about them I like. Dinosaur has nice CG animation. Emperor's New Groove has a nice setting. Chicken Little has some creativity with the talking animals and the aliens. I also like the dad character. Home on the Range has nothing interesting. It is a dull simple story about cows catching a criminal to save a farm. Maybe one of the reasons why I don't care for this movie is that I don't like westerns. Westerns are so boring. I wouldn't say Home on the Range is one of the worst of the worst Disney movies. It does have a decent working plot to it. That makes it significantly better than the lousy packaged movies and plotless movies of the olden days of Disney. Home on the Range would be the next step up. It gives the bare minimum for a movie, and not much else. I would call it one of the blandest Disney movies. There is no such as a bad concept of a film. There is just bad executions. I think a cartoon movie about cows can work. There is one brief part I like. The trio of cows walk into town. Then there are loud noises. Then the cows get really startled. I like this part because that is a whole like like how real cows would behave. Cattle are sensitive and vigilant creatures. They can get spooked real bad real easily. So a more interesting idea is to take a Temple Grandin approach to a cattle movie. There can be talking cattle struggling with harsh conditions in a farm. Then they can work towards having more humane conditions. The farms can be built in a new way to reduce the anxiety and other distresses of the cow. If the movie is willing to go on the dark side, it may even explore more humane methods of slaughter. If Bambi can tackle the issue of killing animals for food, then a farm movie could do the same. I think there may have been a movie like that called Charlottes Web. It was about pigs. Home on the Range does have a bison. I have gushed on Brother Bear. Then I have another idea. There could be a movie about Native Americans and bison. That would be cool. When it comes to respecting nature, the bison is my favorite example. The Plains Native Americans have strong ties to the bison. They hunt the bison for a living. They are respectful in making reasonable limits to the hunting. They also use all the parts of the bison body so nothing goes to waste. There are even interesting myths about bison and nature spirits. It would be really cool I f there was a movie based on that. It can have prairies, teepees and everything. There is an amusing irony. The white people claim that they are more civilized. However it is the Native Americans that have more wisdom about the envoronment. That makes them better in a way. When the white people hunt bison, they take the skins and leave the rest of the body to rot. They hunted so many that the bison became endangered. It would make for a cool story if a Native American person learned how to respect the bison. I am not so sure if there ought to be white people. Pocahontas did tackle the issue of racism and colonialism. Yet it became very criticized. Maybe the topic was too difficult and Disney bit off more than it can chew. There are hardly any movies about Native Americans anyway. I am content with having movies having more focus on nonwhite people. There are two kinds of approaches. One is like Brother Bear, Mulan and Moana. This is a case where white people are completly absent. Another is like Lilo and Stitch and Princess and the Frog. This is where white people are present but play a minor role. Hopefully more movies with more representation will be made. Then in the future, it will be easier to tackle the difficult subject of racism. Maybe Pocahontas is a case of a great concept but a fumbled execution.The later times is the most crucial time to learn to respect bison. This can be shown in a subtle way by having horses in the movie. Modern horses didn't come into America until later. They were brought by the Spanish. The Native Americans can be the ones riding horses. Home on the Range does have a horse. Chicken Little This is another movie that is really bad. It is cool to mix talking animals with aliens. However I can't get into it that much. One big problem I have is the way the movie looks. It is so ugly. I am not just talking about the duck character. It is just the whole movie is ugly. The colors are especially bad. They look so sickly. I am willing to tolerate bad visuals if there is a good story behind it. Sadly this doesn't. The movie gets critisized by being mean spirited. I personally don't mind. Conflict is a vital part of story telling. It is worth it if there is a compelling story where a protagonist overcomes people bullying and discriminating against them. Chicken Little does do that. However this kind of story has been done to death. So I would rather watch a better movie that does this. My top favorite Disney movie is Frozen. Elsa is my top favorite Disney character. She goes through a similar situation. However it is dome a zillion million bajillion times better. In Chicken Little I was plesently surprized by the dad character. He isn't enough to save the movie though. People critisize the dad by being too mean to Chicken Little. I can see that. However as bad parant characters go, he is not that bad. He is dad of the month compared to the really heinous parents like Lady Tremaine or Mother Gothel. I do understand what this dad is up against. He is caught between the bullying townsfolk and the son with poor self esteem. It is easier to side with the townsfolk, because the son a much less threatening. The dad is trying to be nice, and trying to keep things together. It is just difficult. He also struggles with being a single parent and missing his wife. I wonder what did happen to Chicken Little's mother. The dad trys to be nice, but he makes mistakes. So he harms Chicken Little unintentionally. This familiy really needs help. Maybe there can be a counselor or something. There is a sweet part at the end of the movie. The dad and the son have a nice heart to heart talk. This does give a good lesson on unconditional love. This is a lesson that needs to be beaten in the heads of all children and parents. Chicken Little shouldn't have to impress his dad. He dad should love him regardless of what happens.

I rewatched Brother Bear on Disney Plus for the first time in yeaaaaars lol it was decent. The animation was absolutely stunning the storyline was just eh it could’ve been better maybe if it was a musical

I was about the same however I would recommend going back to see Lilo and Stitch and Brother Bear. Brother Bear really feels like a movie that could have been sandwiched between Aladdin and The Lion King. Its good and emotional. Lilo and Stitch is just a super fun film all around. The other films in the era are okay but not worth going out of your way. If you are bored and have Disney+, then I'd say check them out. -Josh

*animated I hate it when normies call animated films as kids films, like if they're made for kids only. If an adult can also enjoy an animated film (like a live-action film), then it's not a kids film! Calling it a family film makes more sense as it can be enjoyed by all ages. If we're talking about Minions or The Boss Baby, those are fucking kids films as i haven't heard a single adult say that they like these, but from kids, it's otherwise. If a movie can only be enjoyed by a kid, then it's a kids film. And for adults and all ages, it's vice versa

Out of this era I think the worst was Home on the range, it’s just not a memorable movie and doesn’t have memorable characters imo. Growing up I enjoyed Chicken Little and Dinosaur (though the ride scared the shit out of me at seven years old). I still have never seen Treasure Planet.

Isn’t Bolt part of this era? Some also say The Princess and the Frog is part of this era. While I admit those are both spectacular films, most people tend to ignore them nowadays.

The argument can be made for Bolt and Princess and the Frog and its something we will bring up in the next video of this series...but we believe that John Lasseter really brought Disney out of its slump starting with Bolt. -Josh

I think with Frank Wells, Michael Eisner was a great face and CEO of the Disney company. Personally I think that he became too overwhelmed and also out of check when he ran things by himself, but I think that he did major things for the company in the 80s and early 90s. -Josh

Home on the Range is my least favourite of the bunch. Not really a fan of the style. Looks too razor sharp. I know it is meant to represent the Western Style, but it’s not my cup of tea.
