The bifacial make a nice shade structure without completely blocking out the sun. I hope to see things like pergolas and gazebos with mounting points for these. Add shade and power! With easier access to maintain than on a roof...

I am building 21 panels along my a walkout basement on the side of my house south facing. . It’s where my AC units are located. I am mounting the on a 6x6 8’ to 11’ high side. Two panels rows. They should help by asp shading my AC units. My roof is east west facing with 100 year old trees on the North West and West behind the House. Would only produce 50% of the time. My souther facing has a house below it and clear sky.

I’ve had bi-facial for nearly 3 years. If you put a white gravel or limestone area underneath you’ll find it will produce more with the ambient light earlier and later in the days

A mirror will not quadruple it (tested this theory a while now) but white limestone is excellent

550watt bifacial, awesome. My bigger array has 14x 385watt panels (72 cell each) and my smaller array 8x 325watt 120 half cell. A few years old though of course! It would be cool in a year or two to convert more things to electricity (ground source heat pump maybe) and upgrade my garage array to 500+watt panels. Since I got the EV, I don't quite generate enough electricity year round.

I ended up purchasing two of the Renogy 550w panels to try out. Only looking to charge up batteries and such. I think they will do the trick.

Would be nice to know what brand and model 550w panels you guys installed, next time always a good idea to show the spec tag on the panels or at least just say what they are etc., anyways good video.

Hi again from Utah! It has been a while since we have said hi to you. I am impressed with the output that those bifacial panels are doing for you. I wonder if you could take a snapshot of the back label on the panel and post it so we could catch the specs and who the manufacturer is on the panel. Signature Solar in Texas is selling a US made 575 w bifacial silver-edge panel. I am hoping that I can change out my panels for a better one. Anyhow I enjoyed your video and the results that you got from doing his upgrade. Lou

Wired in series I'm assuming since the voltage is fairly high?
@Leksi80
@Leksi80 10 ай бұрын
Any reason why you went with that kind of a DC breaker instead of a DC Isolator Switch? You have all of them in series type string so no fuse is really needed on the PV side(no parallel strings). With High voltage DC those breakers can be a real fire hazard if disconnected under load. Just keeping it safe mate =) Planning on doing a 22kWp Victron setup myself with 33x665W Bifacial and I would never use those kind of breakers on the DC side.
@dc1544
@dc1544 10 ай бұрын
I seen that also. 5 amps can cause a fire with those type of breakers. I have a disconnect that can handle 1000V with a huge distance so the arc can not jump. I seen several videos of fires from breakers with 80V and 5 amps.
@Leksi80
@Leksi80 10 ай бұрын
@@dc1544 But what is the need/reason for the breaker if you have an isolator installed? Single panel string can never go above the breaker tripping limit even with a short circuit. But there is a chanse someone other than you(who wont know any better) might try to turn off the PV with that breaker first while it's under load. I dont see any safety benefit of having it in the circuit. Only risk. Just my 2 cents...
@dc1544
@dc1544 10 ай бұрын
@@Leksi80 I don't have a breaker but in each string of solar I have a 10 amp inline fuse just incase. I have tested my setup to insure it isn't back feeding or has stray current also.

Why not use all the panels?
@dper1112
@dper1112 10 ай бұрын
He explained that the other panels will be used elsewhere. But anyway, there are limits. Generally speaking, mixing different types of panels can hurt efficiency, depending how you wire them, especially if the panels differ in volts and amps. Also, your charge controller, inverter, wires, and circuit breakers all have limits on how much electricity they can handle. So even if you get the numbers you're imagining, you might need to buy new gear to handle it all. Finally, in general, solar panels these days are relatively cheap, compared to other equipment involved. So it often makes financial sense to replace a whole rack of panels and then re-purpose the old panels elsewhere. The one key question for an electrical system in general is, "How much power do you need?" In this case, they're looking at powering a refrigerator and freezer as the main heavy-draw appliances. They have over 2 kilowatts of panels on the roof, which is more than enough for that plus incidental household usage such as lights and computers. Even on a sunny day, probably they'll be pulling under a quarter of that amount. It should be easy enough to keep the batteries full during the day.

Problem with bifacial is they dont like shadows on the back from the rails. I have direct sun on the back of my bifacials and they have never made more than what the front is spec'd at. Worthless if not mounted on the correct mount.
