Just purchased two of the Renogy 550w bifacial panels. I'm super impressed with them so far. They are one of the first that actually get almost all the advertised wattage. Most of the others I've seen seem to be around 3/4 of the advertised wattage at most and on pristine weather.

@2:30 my tip as an experienced off grid installer; if you're going to use 2 Unistruts side by side it probably makes sense to swing for a standard rail system; it will be easier to mount and adjust with a rail like IronRIdge; it won't cost much more and you'll be able to easily change modules if you want to change in the future without having to measure and space out unistrut perfectly. - Matthew

@@ModernOffGridDIY One thing too be warned about is that that haven't been written on the description so the voltage and amp will increase and the temperature (this is the warning!) would also increase that could damage the solar panels. I was thinking about this, but seeing the temperature increasing (naturally but wasn't thinking about it) i'm not going to-do that because the heat could making a fire.

Nice install video and description. Been studying bifacials about 10 years now for fun. But innovating them, building a prototype around testing inventions/ breakthrough a few years now and output and thermal testing them over a year. Monofacials will be dinosaurs soon. My record, but it's using some proprietary magic, was near solstice, latitude 38 and during cloud edge effect - 609w from a 445w mounted partially above water during cloud edge effect. My max hours of rated output, need to doble check, but about 7.3hours rated. Fixed panel, about the height of yours. If you had tilt you would never get anything done - you'd just want to play solar geoengineer, it's wonderful tech, so so many benefits.

Great content. In regards to higher priced solar equipment and the Grow watt you installed I think you nailed it by saying it just works. You can't ask for more than that. More expensive options should be considered if you can afford it. Let's face it at the moment an affordable system that "just works" and is safe is a really great way to go. No need to keep up with the Jones on that front. Thanks for sharing.

Question.. would an instant hot water heater be better.. more energy efficient and all that than a water heater/tank setup? I know they run about $3K or so, about 2x that of a typical 500 gallon water heater tank setup, but would think for a battery/solar off grid home it would be a better choice for running lower energy only when needing hot water?

Not sure of your location, but if you get snow in winter, you will get a lot of power from bottom side from reflected light. Also bifacials may melt the snow off panels due the heat produced from PV power from bottom side heating up panel enough to melt snow and allow snow to slide off. I'm a fan of solar tracking- not the really expensive 2 axis pole mounted type, but for single E/W axis tracking. Bifacials may lessen the benefit/power gain seen on E/W tracking of single sided panels.

If I go grid only, it will cost about $10k to run electirical wires to the property. I was thinking I could put that $10k into a solar system instead. My thought was a 60 kwh system for a 1800 sq ft home with normal appliances and AC with a heat pump for winter. Do you think this is doable? What if its raining for a week straight?
