Your comments on narrative economy were golden. Strunk and White would be proud. Omit needless words (#17) is a rule to live by. For 2020, I decided I will tell no anecdote longer than 20 secs (tried 10 secs, but it turned into an academic exercise. Nuance was lost...) and it feels like when you're on stage: There is simply no time to add all this "fat". Tell the story and get on with it! This channel is better than YT. One truth that I've learned as a theater actor and art teacher, and what I always try to pass on to my students is this: It takes years of practice to be spontaneous. Public speaking used to be one of the most important modes of communication, community, and dissemination. Sure, you could bang your pots and pans, put on your sandwich board of doom, and wail against Pilate on your soapbox... But few, if any, will actually pay attention if you don't know how to prepare your speech and understand your crowd. In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, two important characters--Brutus and Antony--speak about the recently dead eponymous character, Caesar. We remember Antony's speech ("Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears") a little more than we do Brutus' ("Romans, Countrymen, and lovers, hear me for my cause"). Antony caught the heart and passion of the crowd and not-so-subtly mocked Brutus by thrice saying he was, "... an honorable man." Check out Brutus here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/paGTdYRmj5ton6s Check out Antony here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2mcfn-rgbh9nc0 The transcript here: www.opensourceshakespeare.org/views/plays/play_view.php?WorkID=juliuscaesar&Act=3&Scene=2&Scope=scene

them saying that you need the opening to capture people's attention is something I've never heard anyone say in such a way that I understood personally. I performed a speech to my school of 500 or so and when I went on the stage people were chatting and whispering, but when I said the words 'they say a picture says a thousand words so with these thousand words, let me paint a picture in your mind' as soon as I said that everyone silenced for the speech. and I honestly don't think that speech would have nearly the same impact if I hadn't have opened it with that sentence

The issue with privacy.com is, they don’t actually protect your privacy when approached by a formal institution. If they are asked by any law enforcement agency (not even through subpoena, just a favor), they will just fork over all your data, including your name, address, actual credit card info, etc. They legally don’t have to act like that, they just choose to not value the privacy of customers...

The number 1 fear is not the fear of public speaking. Nor death for that matter... No. The number one fear is far deeper than that. And it is a fear that everyone has. You could go as far as to say it is the only fear there is... So what is it? The fear of the unknown... Let me explain... The fear of death is not necessarily a fear of dying. It is a fear of all of the unknowns related to dying. Will I suffer? Is there something on the other side? Will I be satisfied with the life I will leave behind. And so on... The fear of public speaking is much the same. Will I make an ass of myself? Will I get booed off? What if I mess my speech up? Etc... The real fear is the unknown. And the fear of the unknown can manifest itself in many ways such as a fear for public speaking, death, dogs, crowded places, flying, snakes, spiders, strangers.... You get the point....

I think key is being authentic. I like to start with a joke before turning serious. it´s something i prefer to do. Not because i hope for something personal preference. So when I had to hold a little speech at my university (my part of our research project flunked. not because I messed up but because of side reactions that were not foreseen. Infact one that seemed new to us and it was just the rest of the organic chemistry and macromoplecular chemistry departmen.t about 50 guys. Every group presented their results for the quarter) I started with the lame old microphone joke. I tapped it. "is this thing on?" I knew it was "okay that joke doesn´t get better, the more you try it, but thankfully i´m a better chemist than comedian." That got the laughs I wanted and then I could present the news. i kind of dumped ten grand down the drain and got absolute no result whatsoever. at best a vague Idea why what I was supposed to do was impossible. So I started "alright, bad news, good news. I won´t ask what you want to hear first, because if anybody wants to start with the good news, my speech is ruined. So you guys are gonna get the bad news first. I blew ten grand down the drain. The blown up fumehood not included, as that one is covered by insurance." (a fumehood in the lab I was working in had been blown up by a colleague so it was a good humored jab at that colleague in the audience. and every fumehood is a great deal more expensive than ten grand ) "second bad news is, the catalyst i tried out does not work, at least not on a titanium center. So everybody who´s into stereochemistry perk up, because the good news are for you: It is entirely due to steric reasons, so maybe before the end you guys already figured out, how we can fix the problem." cue to a powerpoint marathon through my master´s. and In organic chemistry, everyone is into stereochemistry. If you´ve got a problem with that, o-chem is not your business. And in the end we arrived at my hypothesis that it could work on a hafnium or zirconium center. Which has been proven wrong by the way. That catalyst my boss had theoretically cooked up (and that i synthesized and tried out) just does not work. That Titanium is too small never was the problem. What the real problem was is by the way way beyond me. I just got everyone convinced, it would be the size of the titanium (which I by the way believed myself. I simply had no time to check for titanium´s larger cousins hafnium and zirconium)

It's interesting how different the teachings are. In philosophy eg. it is common to 'spoil' your point at the beginning of however you present your thesis and I must say, I find this to be a more convincing way, because as a recipient you can match the arguments directly to the thesis. It's not about getting attention by making the recipient ask 'what's all this about? ' but 'is what's being said logical or not / true or not?'

This reminds me of my final speech in my communications class my sophomore year of college. I had to do a speech on an issue I thought needed to be addressed, provide some examples and then offer a solution. The topic I chose was AI and I literally started my speech by showing my class a little Terminator action figure and saying that AI could lead to our demise. I then presented examples of robots that can read emotion and act like humans like Sophia and WATSON. I then make connections to sci fi films where AI revolts and even provided examples of scientists saying how long we have and the dangers AI could pose and at the end my solution was just stop trying to make AI so advanced. And bam, that combined with a more or less loud voice and consistent tone and confidence I got a 97/100 on that speech. 2nd best of the class 😎 oh and I have anxiety so that made me feel even better about my ability to speak

I’ll bet this fear is more prolific in older generations where parenting/society focused on the idea that kids should be seen not heard and thus self-confidence was effected by parental domineering instead of promoting self-independence. In this new social media world, it seems kids are way more comfortable [if not too comfortable] with airing their opinions and beliefs without regard for how it will be perceived or whether they have accurate or even well thought out ideas to convey. It’s hard to say whether this is better or worse as we have enough [politicians] that talk without saying anything of value.
