IMHO glossolalia seems to be a more modern interpretation of the event of 'Speaking in Tongues' whereas it seems more likely to me that people in the past, writing an account describing the event, might be trying to describe someone who was a polyglot and speaking languages that were not known in their tiny little villages. People today might be using gibberish to participate in the event and/or put themselves into the 'loop' that was referenced in the video. Just a thought.

I made a card jump out of the deck for a Walmart employee. A weird little Walmart woman started following me singing hymns. She would stop and snarl at me and say"Jesus loves me, does he love you?" I don't blame religion. She was obviously an odd dooby. I had a flood of Walmart employees apologize and tell me I was not her only victim. I was grateful for the gift of an interesting story to share with others.

I’m glad no one was harmed. Sometimes people do things that they would regret. Good thing it all worked out. Personally (depending on other specifics in the situation), I’d hear “Jesus loves me, does he love you?” & walk right up, genuinely saying “yeah, Jesus is great! You’re Christian, I guess? How are you?”. Hopefully, she’d start feeling different about the whole situation & we could have a pleasant conversation.

Similar story time: In highschool, I was your stereotypical "spooky" goth kid, but I've always been the type that gets along with just about anyone. I had been friends since early middle school with this very chill, (apparently) highly religious Southern Baptist girl. My dark sense of humor had never an issue in our friendship, until something called Spirit week. Basically football homecoming week and every day was a different themed dress up day at school. One of those days was a "job" or "career" themed day. So, as a gag, I decided to dress up as Death. My friend did not find the humor in it, and ceased talking to me as of that day. Lol. Come to find out later, the spooky factor was such an issue for her, that she didn't even celebrate Halloween.

We were laughing saying he would get a stomach ache, I escalated and described to him how it would feel to vomit. It took less than a minute and he was puking in the bathroom. The table was stunned. When asked how I did that I said Voodoo. Which to me was impressionable people are easy to sway. Over the next couple weeks I "made" people have good or bad days. It got old after being blamed for every mishap (No I did not curse you car. You had a blow out because you bought a used retread) and called them all a bunch of idiots. Coming clean did not work on everyone. They still believed. 35years later I'm still stunned and now saddened that people are so easy to sway.

@maddockemerson46032 ай бұрын
You _are_ being brainwashed, that's the whole point. That's how they get your money. If you just enjoy it for the theatrics and community and don't buy into the wacky mythology and twisted morality of it then fine, but know that it would be better to find a form of theatrics that satisfies that aesthetic without threatening to undermine your grip on reality.

@maddockemerson4603 thanks for the feedback -- my faith is growing - once I stopped talking about God in a snarky way to myself he started to reveal himself to me It's not really about the church or money -- God is very nuanced -- The church is about community and being there for your neighbors - the money is about GIVING freely a piece of yourself away - even if no one "deserves" it I've been too filled with EGO all my life - this is a good way to temper that demon 😈 🙃 😅

I went to a pentecostal church to see what went down there as I had heard many... interesting things, to put it lightly. I went in there and the people were kind. They were like a large family and yet I felt like an outsider, I felt like a welcomed one. Well, this was a morning service. I went the next few times and it was about the same, but the kids were the freakiest part. They would stare at me, whisper to another, and try to keep away from me, all the while the adults were friendly and cheerful with me. Some of them even offered me a job. Before I go on I would like to mention that I was a junior in high school and my only experience with God was a nondenominational church and a Methodist church. Needless to say my experiences were more reserved. But back to it- the next time I went in the evening was during Pentecost, the first night I believe. The pastor was kind of different, and the people were more quiet but you could sense the energy building up. It's a very unnerving experience, but the more strange part came next. They brought out their instruments but this time it was like something had switched. They all stood up and were more energetic in their singing to where there were a few groups forming in the corners; the women were all bundled up and the men were all in one corner, and they were all jumping and shit. It was like a wave of people. Well, a few of them started thrashing out and making these terrifying sounds that were like a language, but weren't. It was their Tongues. They were being corralled into the center of said groups and pushed around to experience the Spirit in a more controlled manner. But the really interesting part came next; they all started getting into a single file line and were running up and down the aisles. This was a decently sized pentecostal church so it was about 26 rows of chairs wide or so, with two rows splitting them in half evenly. They were running and dancing all at once, speaking and wailing all at once. A few tried pulling me up to join them but I refused, because this was something else entirely. One person had a spontaneous nosebleed and was continuing to run around. The music was playing this whole time in this descending scale that would start over and over again while the singers were chanting about how "He's good, He's good!" And such, but eventually they left their posts to join the crowd while the musicians started increasing in intensity and musical prowess. It was a full musical setup and it was overwhelming for sure, the lights flashing to match the sounds of thunder and lightning while the TVs played video of this magma like substance flying up and down. It was deep, blood red, but would go to orange then yellow as it "cooled off." It felt like that night was never going to end. It did eventually, but this isn't even the strangest part of it all. After the music and energy went down they all started praying. The women were facing the walls and wailing for forgiveness and were confessing everything they had done while all the men made their way toward me. The pastor came and placed his hand on me as I was praying and was asking to the Lord to give me the ability to speak, and as that was happening everyone came and was praying and speaking in Tongues all around me. I just kept my head down because in this one moment I had never felt more vulnerable than I have in a crowd of people like that. All the while the women were fainting as they had been "slain in the Spirit," while the men eventually left me alone. The pastor kept pleasing with God to let me speak until I eventually spoke a mix of Hebrew and Arabic hoping that would please them. Thankfully it did. After that night I left and walked home in the rain because there was so much heat in that room that people were steaming once they went outside. I haven't been back there since, but if I do I'll be sure to record some of it because I found it very interesting.

Bro I've had a similar experience. I was a huge shakespeare kid back in HS. Like I fully adopted this weird pseudo-accent whenever I played Puck to the point I just became Puck by default for all of the plays, even for the lower grades. My last ever performance was at a monologue comp and I did "If we shadows have offended" but I method acted for like 2 days, much to the chagrin of everyone in my classes. So when I performed, I genuinely made a few parents uncomfortable and outright terrified young kids with the whole "mad faerie" vibe, because Puck has always seemed a little off to me so I leaned into that hard for my last performance. My theory has always been I tickled that instinct that causes people to be scared of psychopaths. I didn't even place because I went a little too far with my full-blown acting during a monologue comp but alas, t'was fun

So here's my story. 7th grade, skinny kid, voice had literally dropped like a month before this. I was in a solo/ensemble competition at my school. I was performing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Miserables. For those who don't know, in isolation, the song is about grieving all of singer's friends who had just died. Big theme of the year, well before the movie. I had to go last. I got so anxious and scared forgot some of the lyrics and just started crying on stage! My choir teacher held on to this for years! And not the "oh this poor kid he started crying in a competition" kinda crying. Apparently it came off as such intense grief it made every single person cry in that audience. I got nearly a perfect score, except one of judges was like "a bit more diction, but holy crap!" And deducted some points. That night, every member of the audience told me individually that they cried too. It was comforting to know that everyone thought I just got really into it instead of fear.

Christian here. One quibble with this whole thing: speaking in tongues isn't an involuntary action. It's a deliberate effort -- among those with the faith, it's basically praying to God in His own language for whatever needs to happen to be so. There is an "upwelling", but it's inspiration, not God wearing you like a sock puppet. You are completely free to do with it as you please, and you don't *need* to be inspired to do it. Tongues is just gibberish. God is the only person who needs to understand it. Doesn't change your story much since you're describing a psychological condition. If this kid thought speaking in tongues was God wearing him like a sock puppet, then he'd behave that way if he's been conditioned to do so.

I also have a creepy-ish childhood story. The path that led to my whole family leaving the church started with my dad catching ~ 12 year old me in the act looking at ritual knives online on my family's computer. I'd been interested in many religions, wicca and buddhism among them. I was studying a book of shadows website, compiling my own book of shadows, and browsing an online knife/sword shop for athames (wiccan ritual knives). My dad caught me in the act, and after a bit of mutual freaking out, I sat my parents down and explained to them how Christianity wasn't my thing. We couldn't find a form for me to quit the church membership alone, so my mom had to quit with me. And as I took the paperwork to my dad's office for him to sign, he asked "can you show me how the website works where you quit the church membership?" And that's the story of how my preteen wiccan phase led to my parents and I quitting our church membership.

This kinda reminds me of my senior year English final. I don’t remember exactly what the prompt was, but it had to be persuasive in some way. I had to persuade the reader. Well I was fresh off of a Saw movie binge, and had a bunch of that stuff in my head so I went ahead and wrote about that. Might as well have y’know? I wrote about how some viewers see John Kramer as a necessary evil, and that I’d attempt to persuade the reader to see things from their point of view. My teacher (who apparently had seen most of the Saw movies) came up to me afterwards and was like “Seth, I’m a little concerned. Your paper was flawless. It’s a little too good. How did you make me side with Jigsaw?” 😂😂

You missed the opportunity. When they asked if you cast a spell on him, you should have leaned close and whispered "what if I did..."

Hi guys. Could you supply a limited bibliography of some of the books you alluded to? The ones which discuss hypnotism or group hysteria or speaking in tongues. I'm fascinated in how our minds work around the weird (and how that can affect people's beliefs and how it may inform the design of some esoteric entertainment.)

I did a similar reading in Middle School. I read one of the short stories from Southern Fried Rat, grossed out a lot of the students that were in the competition and my English teacher was so impressed with my reading she suggested doing Telltale Heart because she thought I could handle it, but I ended up bombing it so hsrd when we went to the finals and never tried it again.😂 My friends and I were also accused a lot of being Satanists, not sure what tench coats have to do with Satanism, but whatever lol. So Jason's story really resinates with me 😊, just wish I could say I failed the finals for being too good hahaha.

I got to ask how does your 40 year campaign work? Like is it still in AD&D? I mean your campaign is old enough that it couldn't have started with the newer editions because they didn't exist yet. Also the question of level is a big one. Like do you just start pcs back at level 1 when they die and have just been making sure to off bits of the party before they get too strong, or is your party at an absurd level? I mean if they did one level per year they would be at double epic level. If you are going with absurd levels how do you even begin to balance things? How is progression done, is it the old system where gold gave you xp and you need xp to level, or did you shift to milestone?
@TheStrangerous Жыл бұрын
Oh no. There have been god-like characters in the campaign, but every now and then the stakes get high and there's a TPK (or close to it). We started with a homebrew system that we used for DECADES. But now we're on 5E. :)
