Without close ups its diffcult to see, but by the mounts and valleys that the case shows when the light hits it right i would bet that at least the front of the case is molded and not 3d printed. EDIT: After you opened the case it became clear, the black case is made with a mold and only the white buttons are 3d printed.

I think it was pretty obvious that with 3d printed he meant "custom made"/not official. Since you can see the casting circle thingy on its center back of the case. And I'm not aware you can even achieve the grainy texture of molded plastic (one that this case has) with 3d printing, but I could be wrong

I SEE EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID, the case is a VITA carrying case. I think I owned this one back in the day. INTERESTING, I was about to say, the plastic looks too good on this, compared to what I've seen on AliExpress, usually it's very clear they're 3D printed due to how terrible and thick the layer lines are. I think you are close, but not quite - as a hard shell case would look a lot like this but wouldn't have the thin diagonals between the 4 dpad directions. So perhaps they modified the mold (if that is even possible ?) for that. Or maybe the re-CNCed it based on the CAD files initially developed for these cases. But that too is unlikely after all, because if they had the means to redo the molds from scratch they would have added the needed L/R buttons designs too. The plot thickens ...

Hey MVG, you should really touch on the safety of these devices. Many of the Aliexpress portables don't include proper battery safety, and I'm skeptical of if it's included here. From what I see, the batteries are soldered, which is sketchy on it's own, and makes me think that they'd cheap out on stuff like Battery management systems if they couldn't use battery clips These are pretty large issues, as lithium batteries can, and will, start fires, that are difficult or impossible to put out. It's very important that they're handled safely, and it'd be an important thing to look out for before recommending it

Aye, if the batteries it comes with start going wonky (or if for shipping regulations in your country you have to order it without batteries installed) - you can always source new 18650 replacements and drop them in as what is basically preventative maintenance in this sort of device. Sure, it won't be as-easy as undoing and popping off a small plate like on a DSi or PSP to replace the battery, but it will be a LOT less finicky to handle and perform the replacement operation compared to something like the Vita or Switch where you need to be careful with the wire routing of the battery pack and delicate with lifting and attaching the plug for the battery pack on the motherboard, as it will be more comparable to placing new AA's in the battery tray of a OG Gameboy, or replacing the batteries in a battery tray located in a tablet case for a SBC like the Pine64 or Raspberry Pi.

A ton of games run perfect off SMB, but there are many stubborn games that give you stuttering FMV's and even jutters/stutters during gameplay. But with the USB mode off OPL, any game that has any FMV's at all will be infuriating. The PS2 is one of the worst systems when it comes to playing roms. I vape, yes I know bad habit, but one of the things you learn when you vape is 18650 basics. Typically it's strongly recommended to remove the 18650's and charge them in an actual charger, because the circuitry inside of e-cigarettes doesn't always provide equal charging of the cells, which causes huge problems. Looking at the breakdown, those cells appear to just have fuses inline and are directly soldered to the power input for charging. There's no protection circuit that I can see. I'm no expert by any sense, but I think this thing is just an accident waiting to happen. I'd be interested to see if after a few months of use, if after a full charge, all the 18650's at at 4.2 volts. Typically why an external battery charger is recommended, is because charging them inside of an e-cigarette mod leads to uneven levels of charge, which puts extra stress on the cells. Not to mention without a protection circuit, the least little short could possibly cause the cells to vent. Like say a shorted charging cable.

I’ve seen these devices on Ali and I’ve always wanted to try them but it’s a lot of money to risk for something that could be junk. I’d definitely like to see the all the devices reviewed, the Wii in particular I’d like to know how it handles pointer games (is it using gyro, is it mapped to a touch screen, etc). The thickness of the device doesn’t bother me, I regularly play on my Sega Nomad and it looks to be about the same thickness. In fact I’d go so far as to say it’s more comfortable than thinner devices like the Switch.

Portable Wiis can use GC2Wiimote, a component of the RVLoader software package. GC2Wiimote can map various Wiimote and Nunchuck movements and controls to the GameCube controller, with individual mappings for games.

@@Dan-TechAndMusic That’s cool, so games like Galaxy 2 can be played! It’s a pity Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition would end up playing more or less like the GC original. Is there anything like GC2Wiimote for a hacked Wii U? I got one the other week and I’ve just started messing about with it. NintenDont has been very cool for running GC games. If I could use the Wii U Gamepad gyro for RE 4 Wii Edition it would be epic.

The basic way of how they do this is they take a PS2 mainboard and butcher it up. There's certain parts of the board they can completely cut out (like the expansion circuitry, etc) and then what's left they divide up even further so they can stack the pieces in order to fit in the case and then everything is Frankensteined together with a million wires. They've been doing this with the Gamecube for a decade now and there have also been some PS2s done as well, but this seems a bit more engineered, but I'd have to have a better look at the insides to know for sure if it's as quality as it seems from the outside.

In a similar vein to this, there are packs you can get for retro consoles and pcs that contain everything you need to put together the system but uses only new chips off of the shelf. One such project for the nes is nestopia. You get a modern black PCB and a ton of newly made chips, resisters capacitors etc, to fit into it and you can solder it all in yourself. Or you can just get the PCB and source your own parts! I thought that would be a slightly better starting off point for a potential portable console.

are you sure the case is 3d printed? to me it looks like it has moulding artifacts all over, there's even a sprue on the back, in the centre, and a seam towards the top where a separate part of the mould had to be used to cast all the ports and vents. the texture also looks way too good to have come out of a 3d printer. edit: around the d-pad, the plastic looks a bit sunken in, that's also an artifact of the plastic cooling down unevenly after it's been cast. it's a cheaply made case, but i don't think it's 3d printed at all.

I was surprised by the battery life of that thing and the insides do look quite clean, making it easy to remove the dust and repair/modify. I would love to see a Dreamcast portable. I got frustrated with the original hardware as I could barely find a screen at my place that would connect without a problem and I had to use a boot CD to play my US copy of Soul Calibur on a EU console

Kind of amazing really. I mean if that's as you say an actual PS2 more or less modded down to handheld form like a PSP almost well it seems fairly priceless. Which is to say I'm shocked you can get this at any price. There must be so many supposed reasons this could never happen and I guess the main reason it can and apparently does is the older hardware no longer overseen by the companies in any serious capacity. They must have a pile of old machines with assorted bits and pieces sitting somewhere and the finished product looks great. I doubt I'd pay the money myself but the fact I could if I wanted is pretty cool. Yours look pretty good anyway. Would be nice to hear more about all the different kinds you mentioned also available apparently.

As cool as it is, it looks too rough round the edges to be even remotely mainstream. Unified power (ideally through a type-C cable) and a more refined design would be the most important things to me. Right now it looks like it could have been an internal prototype for a Vita/PSP.

It's a custom job made on demand...it's not ever gonna be mainstream. They have to source used PS2 to tear apart and shrink. It's not something where they can just set up a typical factory and go to town. I'm kind of assuming after this video that the viewer base here is kind of young when I had previously assumed the opposite.

Somehow, they just never realized that their steamdeck is underpowered to run most of PS2 titles especially with CPU intensive titles. People with steamdeck came to me and complaining why their PS2 game doesn't run smoothly on their steamdeck. When I find out, they are trying to run CPU-intensive PS2 title that requires at least 6 cores of CPU to work inside SteamDeck that barely have 4 cores to work. Also, hardware requirement lists inside PCSX2 website is really outdated.

I don't really understand what management at Sony was thinking back in the 90's while seeing Nintendo's success in the mobile market. By 1999 a portable PS1 was absolutely possible from a technical standpoint. Sure, would have needed at least 3 ni-mh C cells, which would have made it rather bulky, but still, the massive catalogue ant reaction of the PlayStation name would have made it sell like hot-cakes. For screen size and resolution, I think 3"+ and 384*276 @50fps would have been a nice compromise. No point of comparison between that and GBA, which arrived in 2001. People may say that LCD screens weren't up to the task back then, but I had a soby handycam from that year with an excellent LCD on the side. For 6th gen I think that the big opportunity was for SEGA. By 2004 every other company had shown their hand, so just imagine the impact of a portable Dreamcast in late '04. It was never a power hungry console to begin with, and the improvements in silicon lithography from 98 to '04 were massive, like we haven't seen since. A remesas sh-4 @200 MHz, even 300, was perfectly viable on battery. A portable Dreamcast could have even incorporated phone functions and taken a nice portion of market share. PS2, I always thought was much more complex to execute, but here we have it. With a 4:3 480p screen and lower power consumption, plus some tweaks to the sp0, and extra memory all around, I could see it as an unstoppable juggernaut in 2005. Being a Sony product, it would also make sense to give it decent speakers and make it a portable music player for small gatherings.
