One of the major contributors I think to the demise of PlayStation Mobile was also the fact that people were eventually able to root most Xperia Play phones and reverse engineer the PS1 game conversion process, making them able to convert near any title to a XPlay compatible title.

Rooting phones is so hard these days Everytime I tried flashing the magisk zip my phone would stop booting after I restarted it. Same thing with custom roms and unless you have one of the well supported brands and a new device of that brand, you'll have to compile the rom yourself. @@vetrixfx9264 Asus did void my warranty though. The only ones I know that don't void warranty are Google and maybe Oneplus. It's possible I could install just fine now but I've given up. 0:26 Clarification on this one: While Sony kept digital stores alive, PS Vita developers weren't allowed to publish and update games until July 20th. Some developers were able to push updates after July but still, games couldn't be published anymore. There were some physical releases that were sold after July through PlayAsia store however those releases had only few thousand copies and sold out in a blink of an eye.

I really love the Vita and it is such an overpowered beast given when it got released. Sadly Sony was too cocky about it and ruined what could have been a great device with their stupid expensive memory cards. Downloadable games but no space to store those because people don't buy those cards...they really shot themselves in the foot there. Just look at the amazing library the PSP has and then the games the Vita has to offer...heck Ridge Racer 2 on the PSP is the BEST Ridge Racer and then look at the sh1t Ridge Racer on the Vita- the graphics are nice though.
@BillLambert
@BillLambert 2 жыл бұрын
Those memory cards are indeed nuts. I got into the Vita very late in its cycle, and not only were the memory cards hard to find, but the obscene prices never came down much, so a Vita 32gb card was still $100 while plain old MicroSD cards were below $20. But it wouldn't be Sony if they didn't "invent" some proprietary gimmick at 4x inflated prices. It made sense in the PS1 and PS2 years, because flash memory was not yet a mainstream product, but everything after that is pure narcissism on Sony's part.
@miru2583
@miru2583 2 жыл бұрын
nah. PSP has memory card too but they sell like mad. the vita died because of the mobile gaming in the rise. they know they couldnt compete with nintendo and android/ios in the long run so they pull out quick and bet every chip they have on the thing that is going well for them, the PS4.

@@miru2583 This would've made sense if Switch didn't hit 100m+ sales earlier this month. Yes, PSP cards weren't standard SD, but they weren't as proprietary, lots of devices (mostly cameras) used them. Also, back in PSP times downloading games from store was still not as popular, most bought games physically.

It's not narcissism, it's pure greed on their part. They thought they'd make more money by using their own flash cards. Sony is always trying to make more formats to sell, blu-ray being probably the last since we've pretty much moved on from physical media and SD cards are unlikely to be surpassed by anything else for years.

Even though there’s a lot of impressive people to thank for the continued life of the PS Vita, one of the most overlooked is a Sony corpo by the name of Shahid Ahmad. After Sony and major publishers gave up on the Vita, Ahmad took advantage of this apathy to turn the Vita into what he dubbed a “portable Steam machine” which stretched the Vita’s lifespan by a few more years. Ahmad focused on attracting indie devs to port and make games for the Vita and turned it into what Steam is to PCs. Nintendo would take these lessons to greater success with the Switch. IGN wrote an article about him in 2021 that brought this to light and it’s impressive when passionate people with vision get up in the ranks and manage to do something cool.

Seems about right. There are still indie devs up until last year or the year before (for sure) which had consistent physical releases on vita 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ they have a very niche but dedicated group of gamers still interested in expanding the life of the vita. I think i remember mystic or spawnwave talking about it🤷‍♂️🤔 In most cases i feel like everyone has a JB switch but buys the games to support devs and keep their fav portable going Its interesting because as a person who would've likely pirated games back in the day, i feel myself wanting to pay full price now just to support the devs... Perhaps it's because i feel my support is more directly impactful, maybe it's because im older... But either way, its interesting to think about i guess haha

I always told people that even if they didn't want to bother with hacking their vita, it's still totally worth it for the indie-game scene. I find the psvita's screen and inputs more satisfying than the switch for indie games. Just a solid little piece of tech all around.

The vita still is one of my favorite consoles to this day. Despite how basically nobody I talk to knows what it is, and the library was pretty small comparatively speaking, it still has an amazing homebrew community and a few really solid titles. I really wish Sony put more marketing/emphasis in the vita as it could have been up there with the 3ds. I remember having a lot of fun on the psp scene back in the day. When it was discovered how Sony protected their newer 5.55 and onward releases, by having them check for a newer system modules that were not present on a CFW's (5.00m33 and 5.50 gen at the time) And then with the 6.20 permanent hack for the "unflashable" psp's. I never paid Vita attention as i moved to other things at the time, but it sounds like it had a very fun history of it's own. Maybe i'll try to snatch one on the second hand market one day, just to see what it can do. Cheers and thanks for the content mate

One of these days, I have got to get my hands on a 1000 series Vita. This is so neat, and I regret that the PSP is not beefy enough to run 3D games.

This system was so nice, I hacked it twice; first one being temporary, then just recently, making it permanent. Fell in love with the system all over again cause now not only can I play PSP and PS1 games, I can also play over ad-hoc with my sister who has a PSP. It's awesome!

What’s so unique about this story? Nothing because the same story happened on the ps3,everytime a hacker succeeded to beat the security system,then sony did come with a firmware update and so on and so forth,the only thing am amezed about is that the psvita will be 10 years old this year.

I am so glad that I picked up a PSTV when it was discontinued. it is such a versatile and portable piece of kit once it has been hacked. I have also hacked my PS Vita but don't use it as much as PSTV.

The PS Vita has a special place in my heart. I sat in highschool computer class looking up all the news i could find about it. I was so excited. I didnt get one right away but i did when molecule was being teased. I got a pre owned 3g original model which had only been updated once or twice. I was so lucky i remember pre 3.5 vitas going for double the price on ebay. Last thing i did with it was convert to enzo and load it up with 100GB of roms and homebrew. I barely use it but it still alive in a little carry case on my shelf. My trophy of another conquered system right next to my launch switch

I would have loved to hear more technical details about how the exploits worked. This video is more like **when** the PS Vita Security was defeated, but not actually **how**. You've just provided a timeline. The exploits for this system are pretty original and cool, and I was hoping to see a simple, high-level description of how the exploits worked.

Sony's treatment of the Vita was the first domino to fall in my breakup with PlayStation. Even in those early days, you could tell SCE didn't care about it or its fans. It was just sort of put out there and left to rot on the vine. Sure, it had its flaws, but it's still one of my favourite handhelds. I like to think there's a parallel universe out there where it got proper marketing and software support. Well, I guess that's called the Switch. I need to jailbreak mine. Unfortunately physical copies and memory cards are getting really expensive and tough to find.

What a system I remember as a kid in the late 90's, drawing a PS Vita like system and sending it into a Gaming magazine. Much before the PSP was a thing - picture two Vita's hinged together, one layer for games and the other just a phone.

The Vita was such a remarkable handheld. Way ahead of it’s time. Thanks to awesome features like cross-game Party Chat (something the Switch still doesn’t have today as of Feb 2022) I made a lot of friends on PSN. Many of which have become very close friends that I still keep in contact with today. Really incredible to get such sophisticated online console features and social features on a handheld that came out in 2012
