Gamestop is cancer for gaming. At least where I live. They will try to sell a used version of a game instead of a new one if they can. What is wrong with that is that they will actually try to "steal" a sale from a game manufacturer . It's lousy. Gamestop needs to die.

The irony was that I went to gamestop to get a refurbished Xbox 360 around 2 years ago, and I learned that the only system they had was the 200 dollar xbox 360 super-slim. But conveniently, another customer right next to me had an Xbox 360 that she was going to sell for store credit. And right when I was going to pay for the Xbox 360, she asked me about if I wanted to buy her Xbox 360 for only 60 bucks , which I did. So quite literally, I bought an Xbox 360 right in side of a Gamestop and we both got better rewards as I got a perfectly functional 360 and she got actual money.

If I recall, a good game to test how well your Wii's disc drive is working is The Last Story. This is because the first cutscene's audio I believe is completely streamed off the disc in real time rather then being loaded into memory (meanwhile everything else is). So the characters will move around, and do lip flaps like normal for the whole scene. But the dialogue audio will pause, and be get to be completely out of sync with the game. - It even continues playing after the cutscene has ended. Back in the day, this was how I first realized that my Wii's disc drive was having issues. (Well that, and it also Red Steel had these long awkward pauses durring cutscenes, with the Wii's disc drive going crazy)

I wouldn't test it, but I remember a few times when I ejected "Super Mario Galaxy", it still still run, just without any music for like 20 seconds to around a minute. I think it might've been a glitch caused by the amount of scratches on it or the usage of the Action Replay Wii I got at Target as it's not supposed to happen.
@dontegraves50515 жыл бұрын
All Wiis support dual layered discs. Even the Wii mini. The issue is that older Wii consoles, specifically launch systems (before '08) have difficulty or are completely unable to read these discs due a dirty lens or, a much bigger problem, the disc drive may be failing.

I have a feeling this console and accessories were cosmetically cleaned and that's about it. I've gotten a few consoles from GameStop before and it seems that half the time there's something going on related to the disc drive. I had to immediately swap out the laser on a Xbox 360 I got, and of course I've mentioned before that I got a Wii with a broken and clicking disc drive... Which had a game the testers left inside. No idea how that came about. Positive note? I've gotten 3 free games thanks to testers leaving discs forgotten about in the drives! Wii Sports, Black Ops (360), and Black Ops 3 (PS4), all 3 of which I'll gladly play!

Well, we all love cheap stuff. I'm going to be honest. That things had a pounding but that really is a poor design for the eject button. Nintendo didn't care, they sold really well. I'v never had that issue with the eject button coming loose though (will explain soon). Also - I assume that is much the same thing as buying EB refurbished consoles? I have two of those with no issue. A ps4 and a Wii U. You know, I have two Wii consoles one of which I bought for the games they had in a bundle lot through facebook and the other was given to me because the previous owners probably felt bad for it. Both Wii consoles were thrashed, one had crayon and water colour paint still all on it, disc in the tray in a plastic bag full of other crap (I have a useless balance board now, yay). The second one? Ugh, it was passed to me by the guy just throwing it on the ground and then having a car amp thrown on top, thing was so scratched as if a bear ate it and shat it out. He found it after years of losing it, was upside down and squashed inside of a shipping container that leaked. It looked so bad, the nest of cables had snapped from just a heap of stuff thrown on it even the ends of the compositie cables were flattened. Wii fit was inside the drive (shit). How they both work I have no idea.

Having had worked at GS for quite a few years, I usually recommend the pre-owned vs the refurb systems, for the pure fact of they had their hands on the system in that store usually, and can test that functionality on the spot. I also didn't care if someone asked me to pull the system out of the box and test it as is. In saying that in this case, especially seeing how that button was held in place, it's entirely possible with the age of these systems that the solder had been weakened over time and shipping the system may have just completely killed it. GS had their shipping contract with UPS when I worked there, and I feel like that's enough said. I have a million bad things I could say about GS, especially considering my leaving wasn't on good terms. But I'd say it's hard to judge based on that alone.

@@CAPCOM784 It sounds like you don't know what refurbish means? I panicked when my $18 USD music disc (probably the only one I bought it myself in my lifetime and I treasure it a lot) got stuck inside Macbook pro disc drive for no reason and I resorted to using double sided tape with cards to slot in and force it out (because I have no experience in opening macbook pro before) but it failed and ended up watching video on how to retrieve CD drive inside and I open the inside myself and gonna back my disc manually in a terrible way. The front side of the disc got ruined with double sided tape marking and I never used my Macbook pro CD drive again. (I rarely use them anyway) Lesson of the day : Open the inside to retrieve it manually instead of forcing it, even if you got not much experience. Btw anyone knows how to remove sticky tape residue?

Not speaking to just GameStop game systems, but the word "refurbished" is supposed to mean a product that has been sent back to the original manufacturer to be tested, repaired if needed, cleaned, and then sent back to a customer or retail outlet for resale. But today the word refurbished is being thrown around by any idiot with a rag and a bottle of Windex. If you see the word "refurbished" ask the seller for proof that it was sent back to the manufacturer or a manufacturer's approved repair facility and actually refurbished. If they cannot or refuse to give you this information, you are dealing with an idiot with a bottle of Windex. As for the GameStop refurbished systems, they aren't refurbished. They send the moron sales kids behind the counter to the back room where they keep their systems that were sold to them and have them clean them off, put some plastic on them, and drop it and some accessories in a box. There is NO "refurbishing" going on there.

@sinistarxx6 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the extent of their testing is just powering the system on, and nothing more. I bought a "Premium Refurbished" Wii U from them a year ago, and the first problem I ran into was that the gamepad/tablet would lose connection to the system if you moved beyond 2 feet of the console, when they're supposed to be good for over 20 feet. I had already planned to return it then, but I also noticed that it wouldn't read either of the 2 games I bought with it, and the discs were in pristine condition. I ordered the system on their website and got it in the mail, but thankfully there was a GameStop within 40 miles of me that I was able to take it back to and exchange for another one. The employees were very helpful, and fully tested the one they gave me while I was there.
@jameskalivoda66925 жыл бұрын
Although I get behind the theory that there is minimal testing done of consoles at their refurb centers (which largely lacks testing the disc drive at all), it is perfectly reasonable to presume that if it's true that they do test the drives, then the two you got with discs still inside was simply two separate oversight issues. It would be easy to forget to eject every single disc/cartridge when saddled with such a menial and mindless task as checking out the functionality of old "retro" consoles.

My first and only experience buying a refurbished console from GameStop was about a month ago when I got a Wii U. The reason I went this route instead of eBay or other sites was so that a return would be easier if there was a problem. Got a 2 year warranty to cover my bases (probably overly optimistic as GS might not even be around by then). The employees were helpful and let me look at the system before buying and told me there’s not much difference between their “pre-owned” and “refurbished” systems. The glossy shell of the console was quite scratched and scuffed but no dings, dents, or cracks. The screen on the gamepad was in really good shape with no scratches, dead pixels, or dead zones for the touch screen. The disc drive, buttons, and ports all function and it all works like it should. Overall I’m happy with the purchase and have peace of mind with my warranty, now we just wait and see if GS craps out before my console ;)

+NaNBytes All fair points. The point I was trying to make (not clearly, I’ll admit) was that his recommendation was to not buy from GameStop because they sold him a flawed product, but he completely ignored the part of the product that could potentially reverse that recommendation - that GameStop provided a warranty. Had he gone back to them and they had refused to render a timely and hassle-free remedy, then by all means, make that recommendation.

@hackyboi64906 жыл бұрын
Repairing stuff like this instead of taking it back is better for a few reasons: 1. The price of gas is usually more than the price of just fixing the problem for people that have the tools already. 2. GameStop definitely isn't going to repair the board. They're likely going to either chuck the board or the entire console, which really shouldn't happen for easily repairable boards. 3. I haven't checked GameStop's warranty, but knowing their trade-ins, you likely aren't going to get a cash refund. Why would you get a replacement or "in-store credit" from the company that sold you a broken console and lied about it being "refurbished?"
@AxeCrazyAutobot6 жыл бұрын
HackyBoi No offense but you seem to have the wrong idea about refurbs, all being a refurb really means is they took it in,cleaned it up,reset it to factory and powered it on to see if it worked. And it isn't exclusive to Gamestop I was the not so proud owner of a factory "refurbished" Laptop from Walmart that would always lock up when browsing the internet and I've heard horror stories about Bestbuy's "refurbished" tvs.

Having worked for Gamestop very briefly, they don't always test beyond power and startup menu. That said, I have modded several Wiis myself, and I seem to recall reading on forums some time ago that the eject buttons can be broken off by DIY-ers forcing the faceplate back on incorrectly. I've never had this issue, because I am overly-cautious, but just wanted to share this information. I wouldn't be surprised if the original faceplate had been damaged (the protective doors for SD, memcards, and GC controller ports commonly break), then Gamestop likely would have swapped one off of a non-working console, and whoever installed it broke the eject button on the working console in the process without realising it. The repair sticker wouldn't necessarily list this repair if the Wii was bought by someone and subsequently returned in between that initial repair and a second resale; if such was done in a timely enough manner after the previous resale, the customer would not need to list their reason for return, even if they also had found the eject button to be broken. TL;DR Be ready to do your own DIY repair on any console bought from them. Remember: they have people with no technical training working for them.

The two leads on the side of the tact switch are suppose to go through the board which is where the mechanical support comes from. Because he didn't replace the tact switch and the broken one has to two side leads broken, thus the mechanical support now comes from the solder joints, which is why it's now moving when he clicks eject.

That my friend was shipping damage from the piss-poor packaging (either to you, or to the store). The eject button is just an extension leg that pushed the actual button. Any impact on the external button will transfer the force to the internal switch/button. You can see they just had the front of the Wii against the power brick, which was against the side of the box. No protection and the whole thing moved back and forth. Any blunt force would transfer through the brick and onto the front of the Wii. A blunt sudden force just at the right angle would have pushed the Eject button hard and fast enough to completely, cleanly shear off the solder joint. You stated the pads were file, and it definitely looked like a sheared off button. A clean shear like this would not happen over regular use, even if it was pressed thousands of times (unlikely that it was). Either way, the wii at the time of the test was very likely fine, but got damaged somewhere there after. Thus the 30 days to return I suppose. Or fix it yourself... You should invest in a cheap hot air rework station for these Surface Mount components, makes like so much easier even if only using a few times.
