The melodic minor scale always sounds weird to me. It has the upbeat sound of the major scale at the end, and the brief minor quality at the beginning. These things don't seem to combine well. The harmonic minor sounds much more neatly pieced together

You need to learn how the melodic minor is applied for it to make sense to you. Bare in mind the harmonic minor is used in exactly the same way. You have to understand the harmony side of it.

Really appreciate your lessons which I have been learning a lot from lately And ya, I figured it was my lack of understanding of music theory and harmony making me think that. I've been really into using minor chords lately and have been amazed at what's possible after listening to Victor Wooten's "The Lesson". Do you think I should just focus on learning the modes of both the major and minor to understand more about harmonizing everything?

That was what I was practicing a few a weeks ago. I will check your other video about the harmonic melodic minor, sounds great for flamenco like stuff. Do you happen to know the Hindu mode? (C, C#, E, F, G, Ab, Bb, C). I like it, but I cannot still apply it to make music.
