Lesson Material PDF available to download here : bit.ly/2BuByBJ
In this weeks free bass lesson we'll be looking at the 5 pentatonic positions for both the Major and Minor Pentatonic Scales. These scale patterns are an essential addition to your armoury when developing your fretboard knowledge.
With these 5 pentatonic scale patterns you'll be able to move out of the basic, single octave box patterns we all learn when we get started. Instead of playing those basic Major Pentatonic and Minor Pentatonic patterns we looked at last week, you'll be able run up and down the neck like a pro!

I bet you could do a great job of the intro to N.I.B by Black Sabbath. It would be appropriate here as Geezer is usually all over the Pentatonic. Or anything you might favor by B.S.

I've heard from Scott's Devine that really all you need to know to solo OK over a chord progress is to know the root note of the current chord, and the right pentatonic scale starting from that note. This sentiment has also been echo'd in Jeff Schneider's piano soloing video. So it's awesome to find such a practical guide from Mark on these positions.

Hi Mark, i have been watching this video a few times now, and i know it’s an oldie now, but i am still wondering if there is a reason for not including the e-string, i guess might as wel start , let’s say, for a fourth position , on G on the e-string etc. Taking the exercises partly just one octave lower ..

The ultimate bass tone and feel for me is Pino Palladino in his Soulquarian era. So anything from D'Angelo Voodoo etc. would be amazing. Bass and guitar tutorials alway cover The Beatles etc. how about something more modern like anything Neo-Soul. There are a lot of parallels between this style and James Jamersons style so it should keep the old heads happy as well 😉

Nice set of songs! Though i would rather put in first place "Fireball" then. I do remember a sweet bass line there, as well as a bass solo :-) "No, No, No" from the same album would also be a nice riff/song for the video to cover. P.S. Although i don't like it anymore so much (because i played it a hell of a lot times back in my youth), Roger Glover does an interesting move (8th's triplet jazzy thing) in Smoke on the Water during a guitar solo. Perhaps worth to talk about that trick (sudden change of tempo\timing) in your future videos.

I have already messaged twice about this, but here goes again. Of course Chris Quire basslines are sheer dharma (or is it kharma?). But I would really be thrilled to see demonstrations of: early Wishbone Ash with Martin Turner (up to 1972, or the first 3 albums); failing that, Ronnie Lane of Faces in the Rod Stewart days; or even John Wetton at his best, maybe Out of the Blue with Roxy. Unfortunately all are dead except Martin Turner, and he might be hanging out in Devon. He is still tourinng! Perhaps he could make a guest appearance with you.
