After listening to this orchestration, I now understand what Ashkenazy meant by preserving the piece's Russian character, and how Ravel's orchestration departs from that. This orchestration is definitely darker, and at many points reminds me of instances in Tchaikovsky's orchestral works. I went to a performance of Ravel's interpretation recently, and I was seated in a way that gave me a very close view of the brass and percussion sections. Just the number of times the percussionists changed instruments made me think to myself this piece is a "spectacle!" So I get Ashkenazy's point that Ravel's interpretation makes Pictures at an Exhibition seem like more of an entertainment piece. I am glad there is more than one orchestration to listen to, depending on the mood :)

Удивительное звучание оркестра, замечательно, что можно послушать " Картинки " в таком формате, Мусоргский, как гений всегда будет звучать по - новаторски, оригинально, необычно, недаром им восхищались, как Лист, так и знаменитый бас, который его боготворил - Ф.Шаляпин, исполняя произведения своего кумира, отличная транскрипция и восхитительное звучание оркестра под управлением В.Ашкенази, не менее прекрасного пианиста....Браво!!!!

Die Orchesterfassung ist erstaunlich nahe an Mossorgskis Version! Sie spart das Derbe nicht aus, schleift nichts glatt. Das tut Ravells Version in hohem Maße!
