This 1999 Bruckner 7th NDR/Wand concert was my first exposure to Bruckner's music and also my first DVD collection back 14 years ago. After 14 years of listening, I regard Wand as the greatest Bruckner interpreters and the Wand/NDR combination is just far superior. Also the videos editing of these Schleswig-Holstein Festival concerts are just perfect. Great work from the producers and cameramen.

I find the Seventh to be Bruckner's most perfectly symmetrical symphony. It is approximately an hour's length in duration and I conceive of it as a triptych in three twenty minute segments: (1) Maestoso, (2) Adagio and (3) Scherzo and Finale. Psychologically this is quite satisfying because the first two movements are both long and generally slower, and the last two movements are both brief and generally quicker. His previous Sixth Symphony is patterned similarly as the Seventh but the latter has attained a universal popularity indicating the perfection of his form. Anton Bruckner, always the amazing musical architect with Maestro Wand and the NDRSO faithfully executing his blueprints.

Very nice performance, with Wand conducting. Of course, we know Bruckner was a great admirer of Wagner. This is the first time Bruckner scored for the Wagner Tuba (also included in Nos. 8 & 9). The quartet of these instruments invented by Anton's idol are not included in the first movement, but in the Adagio they have a short solo starting at 38:30. In the Finale they are featured in a back and forth with the winds from 57:50 - 58:43. Nice camera work captures it.

Anton Bruckner by all accounts was consumed with a few things the first was his Catholic mystical faith and the second his music. the two seem to come together in this symphony.
@MrPhatmosphere2 жыл бұрын
After listening to all of Bruckners symphonies I find the 7th his best one. The themes and melodies in centre mixed with his using of the moods, dynamics and ranges of all instruments…bounded to a above idea. A conclusion in every sense of the word. Not so „serial“ as his symphonies bevore. The 7th comes close to Mahler, the maestro of all symphonic composers.
